BRANDING | JAPANESE RESTAURANT HOKKAIDON IN HONG KONG

20 October 2017

Japanese restaurant Hokkaidon in Hong Kong beautifully combines two of my loves, interior and graphic design. The stylish minimal identity was conceived by the creative dreamers mad people at A Work of Substance, an agency with studios in Stockholm, Paris and Hong Kong.

Hokkaidon serves sea-to-table Chirashi, a traditional Japanese dish of fish and rice that delivers a multitude of flavours and textures. The identity beautifully reflects the restaurant’s contemporary take on this traditional dish by depicting grains of rice at the core of it’s logo in combination with a strong indigo colour.

The striking graphic on the walls, menus and take away bags are inspired by the Japanese seigaiha motif which is a pattern of layered concentric circles creating arches, symbolic of waves or water representing surges of good luck. The graphic is interspersed with fish and fishing boats reminding the customer of the fresh ingredients.

The branding with it’s strong use of indigo blue works incredibly well for me in combination with the elegant, clean and minimal interior almost entirely kept in light cypress wood without any distraction from the dish and it’s fresh ingredients.

I must mention the tableware as well which is kept in indigo, white and brown tones with varying patterns of seigaiha and irregular shaped coasters subtly featuring the logo. The wooden menu boards are dyed to match the brand’s indigo blue and feature an easily exchangeable printed menu held by a strong blue elastic – simple, yet functional and completely on point.

Let’s hope Hokkaidon will open a London branch soon!

For more inspiring Branding head over to California cafe and bakery Voyageur du Temps and Austrian Hotel Trofana Alpin.

‘A ROOM FOR TWO’ | PLYWOOD STRUCTURE BY BEN ALLEN STUDIO

17 October 2017

a room for two, barbican, central london, brutalist, architecture, custom made, birch plywood, versatile, strong, contemporary, minimal, clean, function, form, style, trend, functional design, v and a museum, creative application, interior design, furniture

I absolutely adore Ben Allen’s latest project, ‘A room for two’ which is a plywood structure custom made for an apartment in the Barbican’s Defoe House in central London.

Pale birch plywood is a massive trend at the moment as the inexpensive material is light, strong and versatile and can be cut easily into any shape. The pale colour and subtle wood grain texture compliments the continuing trend for minimalism, creating clean lines and a contemporary uniform look as so often seen in Scandinavian design.

The purpose of this commission was to divide a single bedroom into a creative sleeping and working space for the owners two children making sure that every piece of the off-site prefabricated structure fitted through the standard Barbican apartment door.

Studio Ben Allen picked up on details like the arches of the Brutalist style estate and created two separate entrances to the kids spaces which feature a desk and a bed each. I adore the way that each piece of furniture serves a function like little cubby holes in the steps for slippers and in-built drawers for books to read in bed. My favourite bit is the fold down desk which cleverly reveals a house shaped window repeated on the opposite side ensuring a straight sightline out into the open courtyard.

A fabulous piece of functional design that nestles perfectly into the 1950ies apartment.

If you love plywood you can see more creative applications in this cafe and this stylists home or head over to the V&A’s current plywood exhibition.

CLEVER ISLINGTON CONVERSION BY LARISSA JOHNSTON ARCHITECTS

1 February 2017

islington conversion, larissa johnston, architects, plywood, connection, light, modern, simple, floorspace, floorplan, clean, storage, decor, interior, interior design, trend, style, minimalist

Phew… it’s February!

You may have noticed my absence on here during last month and though not physically absent – after all the kids are back at school – I’ve been struggling to find my mojo. Not just in terms of blogging but generally as I talked about in this post here.

Politics is not something I usually talk about on Stylejuicer but the events in the US are worrying me… a lot! Coupled with what seems like an endless stream of colds and coughs around the house no amount of interior porn design has managed to drag me out from under the proverbial duvet.

Until now… and it’s all down to plywood.

This fabulous conversion by Larissa Johnston Architects is in Islington, North London and I love how they have completely rearranged the house, taking out all internal walls and switching the bedrooms so now the living space including dining and kitchen are downstairs and connect to the rear garden via some full height glass sliding doors flooding the house with light. It’s a minimalist modern space where each nook and cranny has been put to good use which in turn maximises the floorspace on view making the house feel a lot bigger.

What really got me excited was the way they have managed to create a custom built unit that not only incorporates the stairs but also the kitchen and some clever storage areas. This plywood unit wraps up the stairs and gives the house an anchor connecting all the floors and making for an easy flow.

Larissa and her team have also made great use of the half landing making it a study area with more inbuilt shelving and a desk running along the window. I wish there were some shots of the downstairs WC and utility area as they are both concealed underneath the stairs and clad with plywood.

It may seem a bit geeky but I love seeing the bare bones of a house which is why I’m showing you the floorplan at the end of this post. I’ve got a feeling I’m not the only nerd on here.

Here’s to plywood!

PLACES TO GO | CAFE MOBY 3143 IN ARMADALE, AUS

7 December 2016

simple design solutions, colour palette, interior design, style, styling, armadale, australia, design studio, we are huntly, brickwork, warm grey, dusty pink, dark blue, white metalwork, polished concrete floor, metro tiles, copper accents, art deco, lighting, trend, hip, Steve Svensen, Christina Higgins, seasonal selections

Simple design solutions and a stunning colour palette is what struck me first about the interior design of cafe Moby 3143 in Armadale, Australia. Executed to perfection by hip design studio We Are Huntly they took their cue from the curved windows and painted the brickwork facade a warm grey contrasting with the dusty pink and dark blue on the inside.

The soft colour scheme is beautifully balanced with white metalwork seen in the seating, tables and staircase as well as a polished concrete floor and dark blue metro tiles surrounding the kitchen counter and some large table tops. Copper accents in lighting and tap ware compliment the scheme giving a hint of art deco but I’m particularly smitten with the stunning rectangular metal framed lighting next to the serving hatch.

Oh, and did I mention that this establishment is run by local foodies Steve Svensen and Christina Higgins? Their combined experience reaches from London to Melbourne and they serve delicious seasonal selections as well as heavenly coffee creations. Oh, what I’d give for a flat white and breakfast at Moby 3143.

Get there before the guidebooks do.

I’m continuing today with my round up of our first Function and Form Bloggers Tour Antwerp. So much more to tell you about this hip city that still seems to be slightly under the radar.

One of my lasting impressions of the trip was how much wooden furniture we saw; from solid and raw to highly polished, painted, stained or varnished. The craftsmanship was always outstanding and there was a palpable sense of pride in designing pieces that are of high quality and timeless functional design.

As was the case with table manufacturers Heerenhuis just outside Antwerp who let us a have a tour of their workshop and treated us to some delicious ‘fired bread’ by innovative local catering company Doppio. Run by friends Koen, Matthieu and Jules who pop up with food trucks consisting of a couple of traditional mobile wood fired ovens baking the most perfect pizza in 40 seconds. More about our visit to Heerenhuis in the coming months.

Seasonal pop up store quatuor in the old town showing Ethnicraft, universo positivo and Notre Monde amongst other popular Scandinavian brands.

During our excursion into the old town of Antwerp we also got to meet local brands Ethnicraft and universo positivo who both craft highly functional contemporary furniture whilst caring deeply about the sustainability and durability of their products. We visited their current seasonal pop up store in one of the oldest buildings in Antwerp dating back to 1542 and built in the traditional Flemish style. Here you can discover their contemporary collection in this stimulating ancient environment – a real treat for the eye. More soon.

St Vincents storefront on Kleine Markt 13.

More shopping had to be done at St Vincents which must be Europe’s hottest concept store right now. Their selection of unique design-led items from art, fashion, furniture, lighting, ceramics, stationery and more is totally on trend and I could have quite happily bought the whole lot.

The owners Henri and Geraldine are passionate about what they do and have swapped professional careers as an economist and lawyer for shop life and host regular inspiring talks, concerts, art exhibitions and private dining events at their store.

They also serve artisan coffee and tea daily as well as small snacks so you can sit down, relax and soak up the atmosphere whilst leisurely browsing their selection. And they’re open on Sundays – a rarity for continental Europe.

Concrete boarding detail at Graanmarkt 13 by architect and interior designer Vincent van Duysen.

Talking of culinary delights we were lucky to dine in one of Antwerp’s leading design establishments: Graanmarkt 13, a restaurant, gallery, shop and penthouse which sleeps six and has been home to famous and not so famous creative figures from around the world. [You might remember me blogging about it here.] We had an absolutely fabulous three course meal served by chef Seppe Nobels before getting an exclusive tour around The Apartment on the top floor which was renovated and designed by another famous Antwerpian, architect and designer Vincent Van Duysen in 2014.

Even though we went to see The Apartment at night time and could not fully appreciate the views from the newly added top floor the atmosphere was distinctly comfortable and relaxed with a super sized deep sofa and a huge wooden table, seating 10. The space is a great example of Van Duysen’s aesthetic with polished concrete flooring and exposed beams giving an industrial edge but adding comfort and relaxed style with linen bedding, textures and textiles. You can imagine I did not want to leave this place that more recently was home to director Tim Burton during filming in the city.

It’s always a good sign when you return from a trip with lots of ideas and inspiration and Antwerp has kept me thinking and my brain busy since we returned. A lot more to explore and all being well a second trip coming up in 2017. Watch out for more posts on some of the tour’s highlights in the coming months.
