BRANDING | JAPANESE RESTAURANT HOKKAIDON IN HONG KONG

20 October 2017

Japanese restaurant Hokkaidon in Hong Kong beautifully combines two of my loves, interior and graphic design. The stylish minimal identity was conceived by the creative dreamers mad people at A Work of Substance, an agency with studios in Stockholm, Paris and Hong Kong.

Hokkaidon serves sea-to-table Chirashi, a traditional Japanese dish of fish and rice that delivers a multitude of flavours and textures. The identity beautifully reflects the restaurant’s contemporary take on this traditional dish by depicting grains of rice at the core of it’s logo in combination with a strong indigo colour.

The striking graphic on the walls, menus and take away bags are inspired by the Japanese seigaiha motif which is a pattern of layered concentric circles creating arches, symbolic of waves or water representing surges of good luck. The graphic is interspersed with fish and fishing boats reminding the customer of the fresh ingredients.

The branding with it’s strong use of indigo blue works incredibly well for me in combination with the elegant, clean and minimal interior almost entirely kept in light cypress wood without any distraction from the dish and it’s fresh ingredients.

I must mention the tableware as well which is kept in indigo, white and brown tones with varying patterns of seigaiha and irregular shaped coasters subtly featuring the logo. The wooden menu boards are dyed to match the brand’s indigo blue and feature an easily exchangeable printed menu held by a strong blue elastic – simple, yet functional and completely on point.

Let’s hope Hokkaidon will open a London branch soon!

BRANDING | UNA RESTAURANT AND MICROBREWERY

30 May 2016

branding project, design, graphic design, una, bergen, restaurant, microbrewery, earthy tones, calligraphy, distinct, sharp angles, serif typeface, together, good food and beer, trend, style

I haven’t shared any graphic design projects for a while simply because I haven’t come across anything particularly exciting. But this branding project for an Bergen restaurant and microbrewery caught my eye with it’s earthy tones, distinct logo type and use of natural materials.

The logo has got a calligraphic feel to it as if it was written with a broad flat nib. There’s an interesting contrast between the broad and thin strokes similar to a serif typeface. The distinct sharp 45 degree angles are a design element in themselves and subtly appear throughout their branding, especially on their website and signage. Una says:

The name Una comes from Latin. It means ‘together’ or ‘in one’. Togetherness is the essence of the concept. Good beer is best enjoyed in good company and at Una you will find craft beer from all over the world under the same roof.

A beer wind is sweeping the world at the moment. The trend started in the USA more than 10 years ago – the idea of brewing craft beer based on small-scale production. This trend has exploded in recent years. A distinction is drawn between full-scale breweries and pub breweries. UNA Brewery & Kitchen is a brewery bar that aims to build on this trend. Locally made beer and food in perfect harmony, with the focus on good local ingredients.

If you like the concept of UNA restaurant and happen to be in Bergen, go and check it out.

MY WORK | THE NUTCRACKER, A SPECIAL EDITION

14 December 2015

the nutcracker, special edition, spectacle_arts, contemporary, modern, ballet, theatre, opera, digital magazine, issuu, interviews, set designers, artists, photography, graphic shapes, contrast, strong visual language, shapes, lines, cracking, walnut, trend, style, my work

I’ve just finished work on a fantastic design project for a new client called Spectacle, a contemporary digital magazine for theatre, ballet and opera enthusiasts.

This is a modern take on the world of performing arts, often seen as elitist, with engaging behind-the-scenes stories, interviews with artists, directors and set designers supported by great photography and contemporary design equally.

This was my brief and I couldn’t have been happier.

Though the first edition of Spectacle is still being worked on I put a Special Edition together for the oh so Christmas-y ballet The Nutcracker which is now live on issuu.

As Spectacle’s mission is to make culture more accessible and palatable to a modern – arguably younger – audience who are very visual and design conscious I decided to steer away from clichés of dancing ballerinas and wooden soldiers. Instead I used a strong visual contrast for the front cover displaying a plain household nutcracker and a cracked walnut on the last page.

The headline font is very traditional with heavy serifs applied unconventionally by splitting up the word so to engage the reader and hint at the ‘cracking’ of nuts or typography in this case.

I also used strong graphic shapes like triangles and lines to break up some of the photographs and support the ‘cracking’ message. Important links to all the performances around the world are highlighted by a recurring triangle shape acting as a pointer.

As the images are so vibrant and dramatic I reduced the use of colour just hinting at some traditional shades associated with ballet like a ‘dirty’ pale pink and gold.

The overall effect of this Special Edition which features interviews with renowned set designers from around the world is one of calm elegance with a fresh spirit. Check it out below or on issuu and make sure you follow @spectacle_arts for more exciting projects.

DESIGN INSPIRATION | CHALK BOARD TYPOGRAPHY

28 January 2015

modus, magazine, publication, B2B, journal, rics, uk, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, learning, super sized, chalk board, lettering, typography, hand drawn, photoshop, fun, diy, coming soon agency, belgium, imperfections, style, trend, design inspiration, inspo

Did you enjoy my post about the Broste Copenhagen ‘Behind The Scenes’ photoshoot last week? If you did you’re in luck as here’s another one that shows you the making of. This time for Modus, a membership magazine for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors mailed 10 times a year to more than 95,000 members and the UK’s highest-circulation property-related B2B title. Have you switched off already and skipped to the next paragraph? I don’t blame you, I would.

So here’s the fun part: For their ‘Learning’ issue they commissioned a supersized chalk board with hand drawn typography which then served as a cover shot. Wowzers. I so L O V E a chalk board and it speaks volumes for the agency-client relationship that they managed to get this idea signed off.

In fact this project is both: a piece of art as well as a very clever and highly unusual piece of typography and cover design. Everyone involved should get a medal or at least an D&AD award. I just wish I could have helped out on a few letters.

Sure they could have photoshopped the whole thing but it would have never looked that real with little imperfections and wipe marks plus what’s the fun in that if you can DIY it!? If you’re a typography geek like me then watch the short clip to see how it all came together.

WORKSHOP | DEFINE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE

20 October 2014

define, signature style, trend, expert, interior, photographer, workshop, london, hoxton, professional, bloggers, business owners, project managers, personal project, mood board, creative, bespoke, emily quinton, gudy herder

Defining your signature style is essential whether you’re a blogger, starting a business or work on a personal project. Our world and especially the internet is becoming ever more crowded and noisy so good photography is a necessity to help you stand out.

My blogging friend professional photographer, Emily Quinton has therefore teamed up with interiors stylist and trend expert, Gudy Herder to teach this workshop over two days in London.

They are both absolutely lovely people with years of experience and will cover a huge amount of material and practical advice allowing you the creative space to find your own distinctive style.

If your project, whether that’s a brand or blog, lacks focus or unity, or if you just want to gather some new skills to use on projects in your home this workshop will give you the confidence, inspiration and motivation to translate your ideas into a consistent, articulate and bespoke style.

By the end of the weekend you’ll be able to compose beautiful photographs on both your camera phone and dSLR using all the inside tips and advice by professional photographer Emily, including shooting in Aperture Priority mode to really capture the images you want to create.

Interior stylist and trend expert, Gudy will teach you how to define your signature style that can then be applied to your brand, blog or personal project through an inspiration board you will take home with you.

define, signature style, trend, expert, interior, photographer, workshop, london, hoxton, professional, bloggers, business owners, project managers, personal project, mood board, creative, bespoke, emily quinton, gudy herder

For maximum creative input, Gudy, Emily and all participants will build a giant mood board which will pull all their current inspirations and everyone’s ideas together in a coherent and inspiring way. Connecting with others is a huge part of this weekend workshop and this exercise gives everyone the opportunity to work together creatively in a way they may not have done before.

Absolutely no experience is required, this workshop is suitable for any bloggers, business owners, project managers or those working on personal projects. It makes sense to have a project in mind to apply your newly defined style to, but you can be right at the very beginning of the road, at a crossroads, or some way down the line.

Ideally, you will bring with you a camera phone and dSLR or compact camera. And for the mood boarding you will need images and materials which define you and your project best. There will also be plenty of materials for you to work with during the workshop too and beautiful props for you to photograph.

The cost of this workshop is £275 per person and includes the following:

• all materials for the weekend, including props for the photography lessons and material for mood boarding;

• a full set of notes for each part of the course with a breakdown of instructions for each process: and

• lunch, coffee break, all refreshments.

A fantastic opportunity to learn from two pros in the creative surroundings of Hoxton.
Follow the link to sign up, limited spaces available.
