Obsessed with Athena Calderone’s Brooklyn townhouse

7 September 2020

A glimpse into Athena Calderone's Brooklyn townhouse where the multi-hyphenate has been cooking up a storm with her new book Live Beautiful.

I’m currently obsessing about Athena Calderone’s Brooklyn townhouse which I’m sure you’ve caught glimpses of everywhere if you’ve been anywhere near the internet.

But let me introduce the wonderful Athena before I move on to her immaculate home. On her podcast ‘more than one thing’ she describes herself a multi-hyphenate and laughs at her long list of talents and accomplishments. She’s an author, interior designer, cook, recipe developer, entertaining expert, creative director, stylist and storyteller. And from where I’m sitting she’s highly accomplished at all of the above.

However, what makes her so likeable are her open and honest admissions that she too has many insecurities and doubts and suffers from imposter syndrome like the rest of us. In her mid twenties when all her friends were forging a career for themselves in the city she had a baby and found herself quite isolated from city life in the then unfashionable Dumbo district in Brooklyn.

Her husband – a successful producer and DJ – travelled a lot during those days so Athena decided to follow one of her passions and learn about cooking. This neatly combined her passion for entertaining and on to throwing the most amazing dinner parties. Trying out her new skills on friends who still remember dreamy table settings, lighting, music and of course Athena’s outfits which would always be stunning! By her own admission she worked hard at making everything look effortless, saying she loves beauty and how transformative design can be.

This totally resonates with me as the pleasure I get out of creating beauty around me through design, be it in interiors, gardening, on screen or in print far outweighs the often hard work and months of research that went into it. I also completely agree with the premise of her podcast which reveals how each of her hand selected (admired!) guests got to where they are by following a non-linear path, allowing themselves to pivot and explore, question and scrutinise. All her guests are creative minds who share advice on ‘how to design your dream life’.

Now, the cynical Northern European in me thinks this sounds like a tall order (to be polite) but Athena conducts her interviews with so much charm and humility, always willing to share her own struggles and failings and I can’t help but find her simply wonderful.

So, on to her Brooklyn townhouse which has made waves throughout the world not least because rather fortuitously the stars aligned when she launched the podcast just before her design book ‘Live Beautiful’ came out, coinciding with the majority of the Western world going into COVID-19 lockdown. Willingly or not we all became homebodies overnight and the DIY and makeover projects started. Interest in our homes and immediate surroundings has spiked and even the biggest workaholic has realised that our home environment has a profound impact on our mental wellbeing.

Though only a tiny percentage of us can truly relate to marble worktops or vintage designer sofas with a price tag of a small car, Athena’s home has given many of us much needed inspiration and aspiration during this scary pandemic. Imagine, if I were to display a huge branch in a vintage terracotta vessel I can be a teeny tiny bit like her – and that makes me feel good.

Her passion, eye for detail and creative flair comes through in every eclectic object she has carefully curated and put on display in her Brooklyn townhouse. I love her vintage finds from antique shops, 1stdibs and etsy. The fact that repurposing and recycling are part of her style also means she values sustainability. Athena assures her audience that the picture perfect living room on the ‘parlour floor’ is actually super cosy and is where she and her family sit every morning. She does not comment on how she stops Tuco the gorgeous dog from crashing into her numerous vintage ceramic vessels, often placed on beautiful pedestals. However, she does comment on no caring too much about staining her stunning Calacatta Paonazzo work surfaces during her cooking demonstrations – instead embracing the imperfections and letting the materials develop a rustic patina.

Athena, if you’re reading this (or your intern whose been asked to search for hashtags on you) please don’t stop exploring, pivoting and surprising us with new ideas. You are a breath of fresh air and even though you’ve been dubbed ‘the modern girl’s Martha Stewart’ by T Magazine you’ll always be my beauty guru.

Now, scroll down and delve into these stunning photos of Athena’s home and if you’d like a ‘private’ tour by her head over here to Architectural Digest.

PLACES TO GO | NATIVE HOTEL MALIBU, CALIFORNIA

20 November 2017

native hotel, malibu, laid back, luxury, boutique, elegant, modern, contemporary, minimal, rustic, surf shack chic, polished concrete floor, wooden beams, bungalows, kente cloth bathrobe, hand dyed rugs, vintage, eclectic, hammock, style, trend, styling, modern rustic

The newly revamped Native Hotel in Malibu makes me long for some sunshine and laid back luxury especially now the days are getting shorter here and the weather is turning grey and rainy.

It’s an elegant combination of rustic surf shack chic and simple contemporary clean lines in this mid century cluster of single storey bungalows. The lobby glows in white washed walls with some carefully selected vintage pieces sitting comfortably next to modern furniture. I love the original wooden ceiling beams and feel a strange sense of wanting to stroke the beautiful polished concrete floor.

The laid back mix of old and new continues in the individual bungalows which are painted in contemporary anthracite grey and feature some funky number lights. Colour and texture is added mostly with soft furnishings from custom made Kente cloth bathrobes to hand dyed rugs and vintage ice chests.

What I wouldn’t give to while away a lazy afternoon in the custom made hammock.

And if you long for some more boutique hotel luxury have a look at the San Giorgio in Mykonos or the Bruecke 49 in Vals, Switzerland.

GREAT JONES NOHO LOFT BY UNION STUDIO

24 October 2017

great jones noho loft, union studio, matthew bear, craftsmanship, bespoke, heirloom quality furniture, handcrafted architecture, interior design, style, styling, trend, industrial style, crittall, steel, modern, contemporary, vintage, characterful, textures, rich, designer lighting, furniture

Another week – another loft! This time it’s the Great Jones NoHo loft in New York designed by California based furniture and interior design company Union Studio who created some exceptional pieces of bespoke furniture for the space.

Their passion for craftsmanship and use of steel reminds me of Danes Overgaard & Dyrman and I love the rich contrasting colour palette of the loft from black floorboards and window frames to grey walls and white ceilings. Interesting textures are everywhere from exposed brick walls to a tiled black headboard, a bespoke mahogany bath tub as well as some carefully chosen vintage finds and contemporary designer lighting and furniture.

The Crittall style steel doors and exposed pipes and wires remind you of the loft’s industrial past as a factory which has now been perfectly adapted for modern living with a rich and characterful open plan layout. A wonderful project by Union Studio’s founder Matthew Bear who produces heirloom quality furniture and handcrafted architecture with selected craftspeople throughout the Bay area.

I can’t wait to see Union Studio’s next project.

PLACES TO GO | LE COUCOU RESTAURANT, NYC

21 March 2017

Le Coucou, NYC, restaurant, french, cuisine, daniel rose, soho, 11 howard hotel, charm, sophistication, industrial bones, brick walls, pale wooden flooring, crittall style windows, plush banquette sofas, roman and williams, sumptuous, mural, dean barger, brass, vintage, francophile, chic, trend

It’s a feast for all the senses at Le Coucou, voted NYC’s best new restaurant in 2016 by Time Out.

Run by Chicago-born chef Daniel Rose and supported by Stephen Starr the food is evidently first class due to Rose’s obsession about ingredients and his immersive training in France where he spent the past 10 years running his own successful restaurant Spring.

But I want to focus on the interior design of the space which is set within SoHo’s hip 11 Howard hotel in NYC. The dining room oozes French charm and sophistication though on closer inspection you discover the industrial bones of the building which come through in the white-washed brick walls, pale wooden flooring and the Crittall style windows and dividing doors. Yet interior designers Roman and Williams have managed to inject some cool sophistication and decadence by adding plush banquette sofas and vintage style upholstered chairs as well as the quintessentially French table linen. I like the touches of colour coming through in the olive green upholstery and slate bluey-grey sofas as well as the dark wooden dining furniture which adds some warmth to the large space.

Roman and Williams are interior mega stars having worked for Hollywood A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow as well as designing such iconic hotels as the Ace and The Standard Highline to name but a few. Known for their rich, dark and layered look they managed to make the space decadent but contemporary at the same time.

I can’t help but be drawn to the sumptuous bar area which features a hand painted mural by New York artist Dean Barger based on 18th century French landscape paintings. The bar itself is centred in the small space and features classic dark marble top and brass taps framed by a large liquor display set within a guilt mirror. The feeling is intimate, romantic and authentically French with a large crystal chandelier and original vintage sofas.

You’ve got to hand it to Roman and Williams it’s an interior that caters for the Francophile East Coast elite and I suspect will look even better with age adding more shabby to the chic.

IKEA INSPO | HERRINGBONE WORKTOP

20 March 2017

ikea inspo, herringbone, worktop, table, industrial, style, stylish, luxurious, walnut, wood, polished, trestle, vintage, lamp, pella hedeby, kristofer johnsson, decor, interiors, trend

Some Ikea inspo today I found over the weekend. Isn’t the walnut herringbone table/worktop just gorgeous?

The dark polished wooden surface gives a bit of a luxurious, masculine edge and works so well with industrial elements like the black metal trestle legs and vintage style work lamp. I quite like the grey herringbone throw too since I always get cold sitting at my desk. Great styling by Pella Hedeby as always and shot by Kristofer Johnsson.

It seems the herringbone worktop is not yet available in the UK but it can’t be long now… #hurryupikeauk
