STYLISH PERGOLA IDEAS FOR SUMMER

29 June 2020

I've researched some stylish pergola ideas for the summer in this post, from custom built to innovative uses and beautiful decorations.

It’s been hot here in the UK these past couple days and I’ve come to the conclusion that we need a pergola to give us some extra shade and to prevent the rear of the ground floor from overheating.

Interestingly, it’s been quite hard to find any stylish pergola ideas. A quick search on Pinterest came up with some horrible tacky DIY kits, leading me to a wider search online where it transpires the really nice ones are all custom built. Obvs! As is the case for the opening shot which features Emma Lanes’s (owner of The Range and The Farm in the Byron Hinterland) rustic outdoor tub shower underneath a chunky wooden pergola.

I love how the uneven slats let the smallest slithers of sunlight through and the pergola looks so solid a whole team of Aussie Rules players could probably practice their pulls ups without the construction moving even a millimetre thanks to some wonderful craftsmanship.

Another example I’ve been swooning over belongs to Swedish stylist, photographer and blogger Daniella Witte. Her pergola consists of a simple metal frame to which fabric sails can be attached. A neat solution, especially if you don’t want shade all year round and live in northern Europe. See her stunning home on a former horse farm here in one of my previous blog posts.

I also like the versatility of a pergola which can be a sculptural element for the garden getting taken over by beautiful climbers or evergreens like ivy over the years. In combination with some decorative lighting this can look stunning – just check out the images below.

For now I’ll leave you with some of the stylish pergola ideas I found online. As to installing one for our house I’ll have to see how our renovation budget is looking once we kick off in September, subject to kids being back at school and Covid rates close to zero – I know it’s a long shot.

If you’re craving some holidays for the eyes heads over to this place in Crete which features another solid chunky wooden pergola as well as an incredible infinity pool overlooking the Agean Sea. Or gorge yourself on one of my favourite boutique hotels Casa Cook in Rhodes – I so hope this will survive the current pandemic so I can dive into that pool.

9 April 2018

Happy Monday folks! Browsing Pinterest late last night I came across online store Prettypegs who offer legs, knobs and fronts for Ikea furniture.

These stunning still life shots got me hooked and having put up a massive Pax wardrobe yesterday – which broke BTW and nearly broke me (yes, I almost gave up) but it’s up now so it’s all good – I’m already thinking which knobs to choose… wood or steel or just stay handleless? #firstworldproblems

LAGOM | BATHROOM COLLABORATION WITH LOTTA AGATON

9 March 2018

korean brand, lagom, bathroom collaboration, norm architects, note design studio, lotta agaton, style, Scandi, soft, calm, minimalism, minimal, muted palette, textures, objects, styling, photography, simple, design, product design, launch, spring 2018

Korean brand Lagom approached Swedish super stylist Lotta Agaton, trendy Danish architects Norm and multidisciplinary Note Design Studio last year to add to their bathroom collection and the results of these combined Scandi design superpowers can be seen in these beautifully styled shots.

Soft Swedish minimalism at its best with simple products that add style to even the smallest bathroom.

I’ve been a fan of Lotta’s aesthetic for a long time and love how she carefully and deliberately lays out her objects – always managing to create a muted palette with interesting shapes and textures. The bathroom collaboration will launch this Spring and I can NOT wait.

You can see more of Lotta’s work in previous posts here (food styling), here (garden gadgets) and here (stunning book with more eye candy).

PEOPLE TO WATCH | OVERGAARD AND DYRMAN FURNITURE

28 August 2017

Overgaard and Dyrman, furniture, designer maker, interior, for the home, style, trend, leather, steel, inspiration, exceptional, values, danish design, quality, craftsmanship, makers journey, Søren Rose Studio, tribeca loft, peder moos, copenhagen

Today I want to introduce you to Danish furniture designer-makers Overgaard & Dyrman whom I had the pleasure to meet on my latest trip to Copenhagen a couple of weeks ago. It was in fact my friend Leonora who is an interior designer based in Copenhagen that introduced me to Jasper Overgaard at his workshop and showroom in Frederiksgade in central Copenhagen.

Visiting the Overgaard & Dyrman creative hub immediately struck a chord with me not just to experience, touch and feel the smooth leather and cool steel of the wire collection furniture but to see the sketches, tools and inspirational paraphernalia dotted around the small attic that all contribute to the exceptional designs.

By sheer coincidence I featured the Overgaard & Dyrman bar stool in my post last month about a tribeca loft renovation by Søren Rose Studio and it turns out that the two founders were invited by Søren to his Makers Journey event amongst other skilled craftsmen in the Catskills mountains upstate NY. A small world and a somewhat serendipitous moment that I should find myself in their workshop a month later.

Their short movie below about the design and making of one of their wire chairs is pure aesthetic and beauty and I urge you to play it and let yourself be drawn into their world. You will LOVE it!

I could sense that the two founders have a strong set of values and passion for their work and I was keen to find out how Overgaard & Dyrman came about and what background the two founders had. Luckily Jasper didn’t mind being quizzed by me and was happy to answer my questions about Danish design and why he thinks the Danes appreciate and value design and beauty in their home more than any other nation.

First of all please tell us about yours and Christian’s background, how did you two meet and how did Overgaard & Dyrman come about?

Christian Dyrman and I (Jasper Overgaard) met studying engineering in Aalborg (North-west of Denmark) in 2005 and almost from day one we realized we had the same ambitions and shared the same values and passion for great craftsmanship and design.

During the studies, our friendship and collaborative skills evolved. We ended up doing almost all projects together during our engineering course and later at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation in Copenhagen.

After graduation we split up. Christian, who was already a skilled blacksmith, went back to northern Jutland and got a job as designer and product developer at a textile and furniture company. I stayed in Copenhagen and was employed as product and furniture designer at a strategic design consultancy. But we kept in touch and two years later we decided to team up again.

We quit our jobs and formed Overgaard & Dyrman. We wanted to create a platform from where we could pursue our own ideas and dreams without compromising.

The first two years all furniture was made entirely by us. Christian did all metal work in a metal workshop in Northern Jutland, and I had a leather workshop outside Copenhagen where I did all the leather work, assembled and shipped the furniture. To work with leather was something we learned during the development process. Before that we had only been working with leather on a hobby basis.

How do you explain the Danes love and appreciation for design? Why do you think you have such a high proportion of great design talent in your country?

I guess our long dark winters have something to do with the focus on interior. We simply have to spend a lot of time in our houses – and therefore we want to be surrounded with good and beautiful products.

In the past years there has been focus on Danes being among the happiest people in the world, which can seem a little strange considering the country is so small and pretty dark and windy during the winter months.

I believe we rank in the top because our expectations of life are different from many others. Personally, earning a lot of money and filling my life with status symbols like fast cars and multiple houses doesn’t appeal to me. My greatest goal in life is to do what I’m passionate about, being creative and making things without having to compromise. Overgaard & Dyrman is our platform to do just that and when I’m not doing that, I’m with my family and friends.

To get back to the question. I believe when people realize that the process is as important as the final product, they are most likely to put a lot of effort into it.

Who is your ultimate ‘Danish design hero’ in the past or present?

If I had to pick just one it would be Peder Moos – probably best known among collectors and furniture enthusiasts. He crafted the vast majority of his furniture himself and never compromised on quality or his passion for making things exactly how he thought they should be. A perfectionist and an original, we as designers and craftsmen can only respect and admire.

How do you make sure that Overgaard & Dyrman differentiate themselves from competitors? What’s your unique selling point and who are your customers?

I do very much believe in the power of crafting beautiful things and in the power of a beautiful, honest and well thought out process. In all modesty we have seen how much attention our approach to design and manufacturing has led to just by challenging how ‘a chair’ is normally made and hopefully also because the design shows that we have put a great effort into the shape and every single detail without compromising.

Our clients are located all over the world and are both private clients and businesses. It’s often people that admire a high level of craftsmanship and quality and the story behind the product – as well as a comfortable piece of furniture of course. They often tap into the details and see our pieces as more than just a piece of furniture.

Our brand naturally reflects these values and is built on integrity, innovation, exquisite quality, attention to detail and transparency.

Thank you so much Jasper for your time and letting me have a snoop around your workshop. I’m sure we will see and hear a lot more about Overgaard & Dyrman in the coming years.

FOR THE HOME | COFFEE AND CAKE WITH AMARA

22 May 2017

amara, online retailer, amara living, style, trend, styling, tabel setting, coffee and cake, german, tradition, slow living, mid afternoon, indulge, savour, hygge, fika, memories, serax, lexington, matt gold cutlery, craftsmanship, tableware, napkins

As long as I can remember coffee and cake has been an essential part of my life. I don’t mean coffee AND cake but the combination of the two which calls for a break in the (work) day, time out, a moment to sit down and enjoy the complimentary flavours, the unmistakable bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the cake. For me one is (almost) no good without the other. But apart from the culinary experience there is a whole culture behind it which I believe you can only truly understand if you’ve grown up with this tradition.

In Germany coffee and cake is celebrated every day around mid afternoon. It’s as casual or as formal as you like it to be and you can set your table accordingly. My fondest memories are sitting in my grandparents kitchen on their farm and my grandmother slowly pouring the hot water into the chipped porcelain coffee filter, filling the air with that unmistakable coffee aroma and creating the perfect brew. She always made sure we had a something sweet and if she hadn’t got any left over cake from the weekend we had a piece from the local bakery or at worst some home made biscuits or bread and jam. It was a chance to get together, sit informally around the table, savour and engage in conversation, from the farmer to the farmhand, young and old and whoever else happened to be around, coffee and cake was all inclusive and above all a bonding experience.

The Swedes have their fika, the Danish like their Hygge and the Germans have their coffee and cake. A tradition that is still so loved and important to people that they like to set the table with nice ceramics, cutlery and – if you’re really posh – some napkins.

It was interesting how these and many other wonderful memories came flooding back to me when I styled this table setting with the beautiful Pure porcelain tableware and stunning matt gold cutlery from online retailer Amara. The glaze on the ceramics by Serax is totally unique on each piece as is the irregular shape of the plates and cups which make it so tactile and fascinating to look at. In an age of mass production we seem to be drawn to individuality and like to surround ourselves with things that are unique. The urban jungle movement is testament to this as is the return to values of craftsmanship, handmade and customisable items.

Why don’t you celebrate coffee and cake German style? Setting the table with your favourite pieces and gather your loved ones around to savour, indulge and spend some quality time together. Slow living mid afternoon and remember: no phones allowed!
