PINK AESOP STORE IN LONDON BY SNØHETTA

15 February 2019

This new pink AESOP store in London features a large vaulted structure originating from a central round basin which gives the store a real sense of drama.

I’ve featured a few AESOP interiors on the blog before – remember the Melbourne one – but none of them had such a strong colour reference as the new pink AESOP store in London’s Duke of York Square, just off the famous Kings Road.

AESOP interiors around the world are show stoppers, always pushing the boundaries of what we traditionally think a skin care brand should look like. None look the same and they often commission famous leading interior designers to fit out their stores, like Ilse Crawford or in today’s feature Norwegian studio Snøhetta.

I love the strategic thinking behind the brand which has become synonymous with innovation and leadership in design. This can only be a good thing and from working with clients on a daily basis I know who much guts and bravery it takes to push such a brand strategy through. ‘It’s lonely at the top’ as they say but polarising your audience also ensures a loyal following from those who do ‘buy into’ your values.

I for one am totally addicted to their mandarin, rosemary and cedar hand wash and cream and I never tire of their exotic and complex Marrakesh scent. The functional, apothecary-style packaging and ‘off’ colours like brown, sludgy grey, moss green or burnt orange is an equally brave choice amongst the sea of white and vibrant colours used by competitors.

This new pink AESOP store in London features a large vaulted structure originating from a central round basin which gives the store a real sense of drama.

But I digress and giving you far too much marketing spiel. The main point is the new store’s dominate pink colour, a pigmented clay based plaster by Clayworks sourced from the South West of England. It totally nails sophistication and approachability, a subtle grown up greyish pink. Perfectly contrasted by the use of futuristic steel in the other customised store elements.

The addition of a large vaulted structure originating from a central round basin gives the store a sense of drama and rather weirdly (but in a good way) it reminds me of the insides of a large fictional organ, especially in combination with the colour. Not too far fetched considering they sell skin care products.

This is seventh store designed by Snøhetta and if you live in Oslo, Düsseldorf, Berlin or Singapore you can check out their extraordinary store designs for yourself.

STYLISH WORKSPACE ALMA | STOCKHOLM

25 January 2019

Alma is currently Stockholm’s hippest collaborative workspace, offering a stylish nurturing atmosphere as well as a mindful balance of work and play.

Who wouldn’t want to go to work in this stylish collaborative workspace in Stockholm?! Aptly called Alma this members club nurtures entrepreneurs and small companies mostly from the creative sector with its all-round offering of different types of communal and workspaces, a restaurant and bar as well as cultural events like art exhibitions, music gigs and lectures.

Architects Tham & Videgård have helped redevelop the large building by creating a mindful balance of work and social spaces. The interior design echoes the natural beauty of Sweden’s landscape and demonstrates the calm minimalism Scandinavia has become known for. There is a wonderful variety of luxurious textures and materials on show all kept in a muted colour palette with a sage green theme running through.

I love the enormous shelving unit running alongside one wall, painted in that distinct grey green which compliments the objects on show. The beautiful tri-colour chevron floor tiles are a real showstopper and add pattern to the serene space.

The furniture is mostly crafted from light-coloured woods by PP Møbler, De La Espada and Austere with design by the likes of Ilse Crawford, Neri & Hu, Matthew Hilton and Hans Wegner.

And the best thing is that everything you see from the ceramics by Rikard Palmquist and Samir Dzabirov to the award wining lights by Wästberg can be purchased via their in-house shop making this a concept store as well as Stockholms hippest members club. Now, where do I sign up!?

ABSTRACT | THE ART OF DESIGN

18 February 2017

I’m currently glued to Abstract the new Netflix documentary series that showcases eight leading designers talking about their life, work, ideas and thought processes; from architect Bjarke Ingels, illustrator Christoph Niemann, set designer Es Devlin, interior designer Ilse Crawford, graphic designer Paula Scher, photographer Platon, automobile designer Ralph Gilles and Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield.

Each episode focuses on one designer and stands as it’s own film subtly implementing the subjects design sensibilities. The director cleverly lets us see through the eyes of Christoph Niemann giving an insight as to how he perceives the world around him and makes sense of it through illustration, trying to find just the right amount of ‘abstract’ on a scale from one pixel to a life like illustration. What really resonated with me was how he takes time out to experiment and play with shapes and objects, not looking for a solution but testing and simply enjoying the process. I feel in our result drive society this is something we all need to do more of.

Architect Bjarke Ingels is another hugely inspirational character who seems to have no fear but a helluva lot of passion for his art. More is more for him and his architecture design practice is appropriately called BIG – short for Bjarke Ingels Group.

His unconventional way of designing and building large residential buildings has not only caused controversy amongst the world’s architectural elite but set a historic new benchmark and he seems to be inundated with commissions from all over the world. From museums to stadiums, office and residential spaces – he’s enthusiastic about it all and comes across as a down to earth guy with no airs and graces just a load of bonkers ideas which turn out to be not quite so bonkers after all. Ski slope on top of a power station anyone!?

What I love mostly about this documentary is that it shows the human side of these iconic designers who are leaders in their field. 70% of Christoph Niemann commissions are under intense deadline pressure, he admits he struggles every day to live up to his latest great idea. Paula Scher says designing a logo is the easy part, convincing everybody to use it is the hard part. Bjarke Ingels fearlessly builds cheaper and bigger than any competitor causing controversy.

These are themes widely recognised by any designer – certainly by me – and it’s comforting to find out how everybody has the same doubts, fears and struggles.

Designer or not – go watch!

INTERIOR DESIGNER HANNA WESSMAN AT HOME

17 May 2016

The home of Hanna Wessman oozes quality, luxury and sophistication. The Swedish interior designer is a self-taught multi talent and incredibly hard working despite or maybe because of her lack of academic qualifications.

It’s hard to believe that this is not a show home but she actually lives here with her husband and two small children (5 and 7). I wonder how does she manages to keep sticky little fingers from touching the artwork, design objects and furniture dotted around. I suspect this is the work of a good stylist to make people forget that there’s a ‘behind the scenes’ shot we will never see. 😉

What really caught my eye was the striking circular mirror in the hallway. Pure elegance and so well matched with Ilse Crawford’s cork bench from Ikea. Now that’s what I call mix and match.

See more pictures of her posing like a pro in her home on Residence here.

STYLING | A LITTLE COLOUR

11 May 2016

a little colour, fantastic frank, estate agents, apartment, apricot, nude trend, white washed, ikea, sinnerlig, ilse crawford, mood board, styling, style, trend, interior design, decor, interior style

This apartment is only 23 sq meters and I’m so pleased to see that the owner was brave clever enough to add a little colour to it.

In the last shot you can see how each ‘room’ is painted in a different colour, starting with the hall in dark grey, leading into the kitchen in light grey before drawing the eye into the main bed / living room painted in a wonderfully indescribable shade of apricot / nude / pink. A clever trick to draw you into the apartment making it feel a lot bigger than it seems on paper and making it stand out from the rest of the white washed apartments in the listings at Swedish estate agents Fantastic Frank.

The cork stools and benches from Ikea’s Sinnerlig collection designed by Ilse Crawford seem to be made for this space and I love the old glass door divider between the kitchen and the main room which contrasts so nicely with the sleek lamps and furniture dotted around.

More of the nude trend on my last mood board here.
