ABSTRACT | THE ART OF DESIGN

18 February 2017

I’m currently glued to Abstract the new Netflix documentary series that showcases eight leading designers talking about their life, work, ideas and thought processes; from architect Bjarke Ingels, illustrator Christoph Niemann, set designer Es Devlin, interior designer Ilse Crawford, graphic designer Paula Scher, photographer Platon, automobile designer Ralph Gilles and Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield.

Each episode focuses on one designer and stands as it’s own film subtly implementing the subjects design sensibilities. The director cleverly lets us see through the eyes of Christoph Niemann giving an insight as to how he perceives the world around him and makes sense of it through illustration, trying to find just the right amount of ‘abstract’ on a scale from one pixel to a life like illustration. What really resonated with me was how he takes time out to experiment and play with shapes and objects, not looking for a solution but testing and simply enjoying the process. I feel in our result drive society this is something we all need to do more of.

Architect Bjarke Ingels is another hugely inspirational character who seems to have no fear but a helluva lot of passion for his art. More is more for him and his architecture design practice is appropriately called BIG – short for Bjarke Ingels Group.

His unconventional way of designing and building large residential buildings has not only caused controversy amongst the world’s architectural elite but set a historic new benchmark and he seems to be inundated with commissions from all over the world. From museums to stadiums, office and residential spaces – he’s enthusiastic about it all and comes across as a down to earth guy with no airs and graces just a load of bonkers ideas which turn out to be not quite so bonkers after all. Ski slope on top of a power station anyone!?

What I love mostly about this documentary is that it shows the human side of these iconic designers who are leaders in their field. 70% of Christoph Niemann commissions are under intense deadline pressure, he admits he struggles every day to live up to his latest great idea. Paula Scher says designing a logo is the easy part, convincing everybody to use it is the hard part. Bjarke Ingels fearlessly builds cheaper and bigger than any competitor causing controversy.

These are themes widely recognised by any designer – certainly by me – and it’s comforting to find out how everybody has the same doubts, fears and struggles.

Designer or not – go watch!

ALL IS CALM

24 December 2016

christmas eve, christmas, canary islands, las palmas, santa, beach life, family holiday, all is calm, christmas wish, thank you

It’s Christmas Eve and since arriving in the Canary Islands a few days ago we’ve pretty much managed to let go of all that pre-Christmas stress and instead relaxed into bach life and running after the kids going with the flow.

I can’t wait to finally unpack the presents from our suitcase Santa’s sack (obvs) tomorrow and get rid of all this unnecessary packaging kids toys seem to come in these days. Annoyingly, it’s exactly said packaging that makes the present extra special for them so I was only able to pack the absolutely minimum with regards to clothing and shoes. Quite a good exercise actually in minimal living and no real hardship considering there’s a washing machine in the apartment.

Although this is a family holiday with the in-laws we are exploring the city as much as we can from coffee shops and tapas bars to small boutiques and quirky shops. I’m posting my finds over on Instagram if you’re curious.

Now, only leaves me to wish you a Happy Christmas and thank you all for reading and following along. I really do appreciate each and every comment, link back or thumbs up and am so chuffed that I might contribute in some small way to inspiring your daily life.

I hope All Is Calm, All Is Bright wherever you are.

STYLING | STEPHANIE SOMEBODY

5 December 2016

I’ve followed stylist Stephanie Somebody for a while now on Instagram and I like her earthy style which often involves natural materials and textures.

The muted tones, minimal styling and interesting objects in these shots taken by Sharyn Cairns really capture my imagination and I’d love to have them up on my wall.

They were taken for a book called The Life Plan by author Shannah Kennedy which talks about ‘Simple strategies for a meaningful life’. Considering the topic I can see the images working really well bringing some more abstract concepts to life.

You can see more of Stephanie’s work and her studio here.

CP SLIPPERS

19 November 2016

craftsmanship, quality materials, cp slippers, spain, family run business, single piece of leather, calfskin leather, colours, slim, lightweight, bare feet, design, trend, style, fashion, women, men, kids

You know how I love good craftsmanship and quality materials so I was intrigued to check out these original leather slippers by Spanish manufacturers CP Slippers.

Located in Elche, near Alicante in Spain the family run business started back in 1981 when Oscar’s grandfather returned from a visit to Japan where he fell in love with the custom of leaving dirty shoes outside and slipping into a comfortable indoor shoe. On his return he started making slippers from a single piece of premium leather for his friends and family and the success and demand saw him start the business which is now run by his grandson.

The design has been carefully adapted over the years but is still cut from a single piece of select calfskin leather which is hand-crafted around a well-designed mould before being stitched and welded together. A lot of care is taken to ensure the quality of each slipper and they aim to send the selected pair out on the day of ordering via their website.

I have to say I love the design of the slipper and quality of the leather which feels great on bare feet and is perfect for walking around on smooth cold surfaces or wooden floors. Good for your feet and posture as they are super slim and lightweight. They come in a rainbow of colours as well as natural leather shades and serve the whole family from kids to women and men.

Psst… they also make for a great Christmas present and you can get 15% off your order until Christmas with code STYLEJUICER. Go and check them out here.’

COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2017 | BROWN

17 November 2016

It’s the time of year when we see colour predictions coming out and for 2017 the humble brown seems to be the colour of the year.

Often it’s the way you package, some might say spin, it that catches peoples imagination and for 2017 brown comes in various evocative shades referencing food and drink from cognac, whiskey and coffee to chocolate, caramel and burgundy. Who wouldn’t want to surround themselves with such richness.

The photos are via one of Norway’s most popular independent colour experts, Dagny Thurmann-Moe who worked with stylist Kirsten Visdal and photographer Margaret De Lange to show how the different shades can work in your home and give a new more refined and sophisticated interpretation of brown. Dagny has noticed paint, textile and wallpaper manufacturers launching new shades of brown with interior textures like leather and brown marble becoming more prominent.

I love observing these trends and am excited about 2017 which will hopefully see us embarking on a renovation project. Watch this space.
