INTERIORS CRUSH | STUNNING PERIOD APARTMENT IN BERLIN

12 January 2014

Today’s interior inspiration comes via real estate agency Fantastic Frank. This phenomenal period apartment in Berlin may be a bit bare due to the fact that the owners have moved out but boy, do I love the dimensions.

Funny how the mind races ahead as by the time I’d gone through all the images I’d already relocated my entire life and family to Berlin, kitted the apartment out and had a scooter race with the kids though all those double doors covering the entire 20m length.

I adore period properties as I cannot help but imagine the life and the people who have lived there before. Berlin was of course heavily bombed during the war and I’m wondering what this apartment might have looked like in those times.

Now the property finds itself in one of the trendiest areas of Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg, and as it’s such an unusual space Fantastic Frank had the clever idea to host a photography exhibition just before Christmas, inviting the local hipsters and getting coverage by blogging talent Bungalow5 and Coco Lapine Design to name but a few.

Looking at the seven rooms with their impressive ceiling height gives me serious space envy and the original details including parquet flooring, windows, door, stucco and two feature balconies make this a dream for period lovers. I sincerely hope it’ll be picked up by somebody who can restore the slightly tired looking apartment to it’s former glory and have equally exciting times, scooter races or not.

BESPOKE KITCHEN BY BRITISH CRAFTSMEN ARTICHOKE

10 January 2014

You know by now that I like to champion craftsmanship and to get behind local, read British, talent.

Artichoke Ltd are masters in their field of bespoke interiors and furniture with their own state-of-the-art workshop in the dreamy English county of Somerset.

As every good craftsman should they are self confessed perfectionists and obsess about quality, claiming:

To us, how furniture feels to use and touch is as important as how it strikes the eye. Achieving this unity means everything. It is our signature. It can’t be hurried and there is no room for compromise.

So, a safe pair of hands as their extensive portfolio showcases.

This bespoke kitchen in Gloucestershire particularly caught my eye as it’s a beautiful example of how sometimes you just have to go bespoke. Wonky and uneven rubble walls like in this original barn are a challenge but the kitchen units fit seamlessly, integrating the Aga and giving it pride of place. It all feels like a cohesive and harmonious space with the choice of distressed and antiqued oak panels, painted tulipwood planking and Calacatta Oro marble. [FYI, I haven’t become a cabinetmaker overnight but admit that I referred to the supplied fact sheet for the materials used, thanks Andrew.]

I particularly like the colourpalette ranging from grey to dark brown wood with contrasting shiny surfaces like the Aga, the glass splash back or the marble island unit. What a perfect place for some serious cooking and maybe even a glass of fine wine. I might just invite myself.

INTERIORS CRUSH | LIVING WITH WOOD

8 January 2014

Hello, I’m back with some interior inspiration today. Staying with the woody craftsman theme this week I want to show you this Dutch Farmhouse I came across on vtwonen.

It’s a great example of how to create a clean, modern look for your home with wood and I like the fact that they refrained from trying to blend the old and new but instead keeping it distinctly separate which is also great from a conservation point of view.

The old wooden beams have become a feature of the house and are stripped bare charming the visitor with their patina. For me old wood is lovely and tactile and I defy anybody not to secretly (or openly) stroke and hug one of the beams. I know I would!

The renovation project was obviously quite considerable as there are also lots of new wooden elements, like the new barn style sliding doors, skirting boards and wooden panelling in the kitchen. I’m guessing it’s pine as it’s so light and gives a hint of an industrial look opposing the majestic beams.

In my opinion the interior works because the owners have kept the colour palette neutral and instead add interest with the different textures and colours of the old and new wood.

I bet it all smells lovely too.

DESIGN INSPIRATION | BRAND IDENTITY MARTINA SPERL

6 January 2014

Let’s kick off the year properly and start with a project that combines two of my great passions: Design and Craftsmanship. Well, actually it should be craftswomanship in this case as Martina Sperl is a talented lady who started her own upholstery business last year in the gorgeous town of Graz in Austria.

Graz is a small town (by London standard) and also home to Brand ID studio Moodley whom I’ve featured before with Hotel Daniel and Next Liberty Youth Theatre. I’m a big fan of their work and Martina did the smart thing by commissioning them for her new brand identity.

The slogan ‘Ewig schöne Möbel’ translates to ‘beautiful furniture, always’ [or literally ‘always beautiful furniture’] and the infinity sign as an icon cleverly visualises the claim with Martina’s initials discreetly added in the gaps.

Upholstery is as much of an art as it is a traditional craft and takes years of training. A solid and often messy business that culminates in a beautiful, sturdy and timeless piece of furniture. Putting the master craftswoman Martina Sperl at the centre of the communication gives the personal touch that clients long for when they commission a new piece or the re-upholstery of an old and loved one.

Moodley translated the essence of the brand beautifully into the printed and online suite of communication with thoughtful little details that make the overall appearance such a joy to see. Printing the stationery on letterpress may be an obvious and currently trendy choice but the classic layout should withstand all future design fads. I love the invites that resemble fabric swatches and the beautiful clean and modern photography by Michael Königshofer. Using the measuring tape and typewriter as a prop or fabric and wood as a backdrop for his shots shows how much thought and love has gone into this project.

The online appearance follows the clean, contemporary look and feel with the usage of large evocative photography. The site is easy to navigate and there are beautiful detail shots of each piece to show the exquisite quality and finish. No surprise the site has won numerous awards already.

A solid design job and top marks again for Moodley!
