ANTICIPATING SPRING WITH WHITE ANEMONES

21 January 2014

Fresh flowers make me feel good and this bunch of white anemones, beautifully styled and shot, makes me anticipate and look forward to Spring.

Have you noticed the days are getting a bit longer!? I’m so pleased that we don’t have to walk home in darkness from the playground at 4:30pm anymore and I’ve already spotted some very large buds on next door’s magnolia tree.

So far we’ve not had a really cold spell in the UK and I’m probably jinxing it by talking about Spring but I think we all need a little pick-me-up at this time of year and I hope this virtual bunch of flowers has done just that for you.

DESIGN INSPIRATION | NORDIC HOUSE BRANDING BY ANAGRAMA

19 January 2014

Morning everyone! Hope you all had good weekends. We took the kids to the Science Museum in London on Saturday and everyone had a ball. So much to discover and learn but try dragging two under three away from the interactive water garden… The cowboy and I thought we might come back a deux on a nerdy date as there are so many cool shows and exhibits which are impossible to take in if you’re looking after small kids.

Another great find this weekend was this branding job by Mexican agency Anagrama. You’d be forgiven to think that Nordic House was a Scandinavian brand which is part of the reason it caught my eye. In fact Anagrama approached the yet to be launched dry-cleaning service brand just with those nordic design values in mind. Combining simple geometric forms with a clean, sharp, well-distributed logotype and an icy, cold colour palette from snowy white, chilly grey and pine needle green to fresh salmon.

It all combines to create a cool nordic landscape complete with its pure, immaculate and undisguised scents.

I love the stark, reductionist style which captures the brand’s emphasis on honesty, clarity and above all, quality. Bull’s eye values for a dry-cleaning company, beautifully executed and communicated in their overall appearance and I’m excited to hear that they will also sell exclusive, quality items such as scented soap and undershirts.

Calling all Bay Area residents, make sure to get in line for this premium service when it opens.

MOOD BOARD | MY PERFECT WINTER CABIN

17 January 2014

Happy Friday peeps! Doesn’t this cold weather make you want to escape? As January seems to be never ending – can you believe we’re only half way through!? – I want to spend a week in a cozy cabin, playing in the snow, sledging, sliding with some serious skiing before chilling out in front of the fire with a good read and lots of hot chocolate.

I think cabins are so romantic and evocative because they connect with our cave(wo)man instincts, searching for protection from the elements whilst making your den as comfortable as possible.

My 21st century perfect winter cabin is a combination of old and new, traditional and modern with comfort being the operative word. An open fire or a wood burner would have to be at the heart of the home to pump out heat and fill the house with those gorgeous sounds and smells. Lots of soft cozy seats, sofas, cushions and blankets add to the feeling of relaxation. I love old, heavy wooden beams and chunky posts as they make me feel protected and connect with the surrounding nature of mountains and woods. Stone is another natural material that would have to feature in my perfect cabin which would also feature luxurious bathrooms with hot power showers and huge tubs to soak in before preparing some hearty meal in my modern compact kitchen.

So after that excursion into my perfect winter cabin, how would your’s look?

And what about broadband? Now there’s a question…

SWEDISH CABIN BY ARCITECTURAL COLLECTIVE SEPTEMBRE

15 January 2014

I’m in love with this minimalist Swedish cabin, aptly named Hermitage – the dwelling of a hermit, especially when small and remote.

It’s located on the Swedish island of Trossö and was designed and built by Septembre, a collective of architects from different backgrounds with complementary skills in architecture, urban planning, urban programming and interior design.

The small wooden cabin consist of one living/bedroom and a sauna with two large windows framing the stunning view of sea to one side and pine trees to the other. The wide sliding doors effectively double the living area connecting you with the surrounding nature during the summer months and the stove for the sauna is an effective heat source for colder weather.

The wooden interior has been left untreated and has a raised daybed with pull out drawers as storage solutions. It gives a very serene experience and feels like a sanctuary with no distractions, giving you the opportunity to let nature dictate your daily rhythm. I particularly like the black outside which makes the cabin blend in with the forest and also contrasts with the light interior.

A beautiful hideaway to recharge batteries.

MINIMALIST CHIC IN BLACK AND WHITE

13 January 2014

I’m feeling minimalist chic this week and crushing on this black and white shot via REVS Magazine by photographer Mick de Lint. The loose fitting white shirt with grandad collar, black cigarette pants, jacket and brogues are just my thing and I love the tussled hair tied in a loose ponytail with the light coming in from behind over the top of the canvas. A perfect snapshot.

It looks as if she’s probably getting ready for the real shot and yet this looks so much looser and appealing to me. One of those models who oozes effortless cool.
