CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS NORDIC STYLE

16 December 2013

Happy Monday peeps! I don’t want to scare you but it’s only eight days till Christmas… eek! So far my month has been a whirlwind of activity and I couldn’t be more grateful to those online elves who once again helped out with the wish list this year. Regardless of how much you let the Christmas stress get to you, just take a minute and indulge in today’s Christmas decorations Nordic style via one of my favourite Danish sites called Femina.

It’s decorated with lots of stylish, mostly white and natural materials and gives just a hint of Christmas without being overbearing. No surprise it’s the home of interior stylist and photographer Mette Wotkjær and her family, just north of Copenhagen. She says her Christmas style has become more and more Nordic and simple in recent years though she does admit to being inspired by fashion every year, an occupational hazard for a stylist!

Her decorating style might not be what most people think of as typically Christmassy (is that a word?) but she loves tradition and makes sure they have a day baking cookies every year and also a day crafting with the children.

I particularly adore the large oversized decorative stars in different materials inside the house and in the garden, some accurately cut in pure white, some made from straw and some even serve as lighting. The home oozes purity and relaxed style to me and I would die for that conservatory with views of the snowy garden landscape. Pure bliss.

MUUTO – NEW NORDIC FURNITURE, LIGHTING & DESIGN ACCESSORIES

13 December 2013

The name MUUTO stems from the Finnish word muutos meaning new perspective which is exactly what they are striving to do: expanding the Scandinavian design tradition with new and original perspectives.

No mention please of the reasonably priced blue and yellow four letter store starting with I and rhymes with Korea!

I have to say I fell in love with Petra Bindel’s photography for the new Muuto catalogue and delving further into it I wanted to share this innovative collaboration with you. Whether it’s functional ergonomics, a sleek modern look or modular shelving designs to suit your needs, the furniture, lighting and design accessories are cutting edge without compromising on comfort or practicality.

One of my favourite pieces is the naked E27 pendant lamp by Mattias Ståhlbom which comes in 12 colours and celebrates simplicity.

Muuto new nordic furniture, lighting and design accessories

Muuto even created their own Talent Award, now in it’s fifth year, that reaches out to all architecture and design students encouraging them to express their story and perspective on a Muuto product. The most talented design students are given the opportunity to become the next Muuto designer as well as win great prizes.

As Muuto explain in their own words:

To us good design starts with the person. We handpick the brightest design talent in Scandinavia and give them the freedom to express their individual story through everyday objects. Some want to alter the world, others find passion in colour and shape or draw deeply from personal experience. How do they see a chair, vase, lamp or any other everyday product?

You will know our design because it has muutos. Objects made sublime through new perspectives, enjoyed across the world, representing the best of Scandinavian design today.

Oh, how I love Nordic design!

WOMENS WINTER FASHION TRENDS 2013

11 December 2013

I’m going to start with a confession: winter is not really my favourite season (summer is) but the fact that you can wrap up in all sorts of layers does soften the blow and adds fun when putting an outfit together. Not even mentioning the endless possibilities of adding accessories…

For me winter also provides a real contrast of activities. From keeping active outside to beat the cold with a brisk walk on crisp and crunchy snow, or even ice skating, skiing or sledging to pure relaxation inside preferably curling up in front of an open fire with a hot drink in hand, propped up by lots of comfy cushions and candles. Maybe I should rethink my choice of favourite season!?

Today’s little moodboard focuses on women’s winter fashion trends I’ve picked up on Pinterest and Tumblr, chunky knits being a real favourite of mine at the moment but I hope it’ll also give you a warm feeling inside seeing all these luxuriously soft fabrics and textures. As always I’ve included a load of street styles to take inspiration from as well as some beautifully composed fashion shots. Sit back and enjoy.

What do you like best about winter?

NOTE: For more on chunky knits read Madga & Paula’s story of BRUUM KNITS.

A DANISH CHRISTMAS HOUSE

10 December 2013

Are you getting into the festive spirit yet? I still haven’t decorated the house but have been finding loads of inspiration online via one of my favourite Scandinavian sites called BO BEDRE. The Danish Christmas House I’d like to share with you today is that of TV personality, crime reporter and author Stine Bolther who is lucky enough to live right next to the forest making it a picture perfect Christmas House including sledging in the fresh snow. How better to while away the time before the arrival of Father Christmas, or Juleman as they call them in Denmark.

I love the way Stine has incorporated different textures with fresh flowers and moss as well as dried pine cones and twigs plus lots of candles giving a crisp and natural feel and just a hint of new beginnings. I can just see Julemanden sitting next to the fire with a mulled wine warming his cold feet and nodding off after delivering all those presents.

It’s a quintessential Christmas House after my own heart, creating interest through texture and materials, keeping it nice, clean and stylish without decoration overload. A great inspiration for my own Julehus – come and visit on Pinterest.

PAPER ARTIST AND IMAGE MAKER FIDELI SUNDQVIST

6 December 2013

One of the things I fondly remember about winter when I was small, especially in the run up to Christmas, was staying inside and doing lovely crafty things with coloured and textured paper. I loved making little objects and playing with them or cutting out pretty shapes and sticking them together as presents for family members. The more real I could make a little dolly rucksack look, the better.

I’m sure Swedish graphic designer and illustrator Fideli Sundqvist did the same when she was little but over the years has taken the ‘cutting and sticking’ to a new level and become a master in her art. She goes by the seriously cool and unique name of Agnes Cecilia Fideli Siri Charlotte Sundqvist and has recently published a book called ‘I Love Paper’ where she demonstrates her whimsical technique, starting with the basics and showing how her art can be integrated in other imagery. A great example of which is the cute series of shots for a children’s fashion brand where they play with her objects from pencils and paint to pistols – all made out of her favourite medium: paper.

You’ve probably gathered by now that I like to champion a bit of craftiness to counterbalance all the super smooth, sleek, photoshopped, glossy and totally unreal imagery that surrounds us and to me Fideli’s work is a breath of fresh air.

I love the fact that her unique style of photographed paper silhouettes and actual objects makes you stop in your tracks and question – even just for a split second – what’s real and what isn’t. I guess the kid in me is reminded of my own ‘cutting and sticking’ days.
