CARAMEL BABY AND CHILD – GROWING UP & FUNDRAISING

26 September 2013

I was proud to introduce you last week to luxury brand caramel baby and child and want to treat you with some more photos of their AW 2013 collection.

They are as old as the (21st) century and are now in their teenage years growing into a global lifestyle brand. They have recently opened a store in Singapore and plan to open more in key fashion cities around the world always retaining their personal feel which is of such importance for founder Eva Karayiannis.

Their vintage inspired pieces and innovative colour palette pushes the boundaries of traditional childrenswear and has attracted famous brand ambassadors like Victoria Beckham, Reese Whiterspoon, Maggie Gyllenhall, Jodie Kidd, Laura Bailey, Camilla Rutherford and Ayda & Robbie Williams. So far nothing new you might say.

However, I loved reading about their fundraising party in May for Natalia Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation which funds programmes supporting families bringing up children with special needs and building play parks and playgrounds around Russia.

From what I’ve read Natalia is genuinely passionate about the children in her home country and campaigns tirelessly. Her main yearly event being the Love Ball in Monte-Carlo, rasing a staggering 3.2 million Euros this year thanks to her A-list friends around the world. I’d love to meet her (who wouldn’t!?) and talk some more about her cause as she seems a totally down-to-earth supermodel (if that’s no oxymoron) who enjoys nothing more than being fed by her mum cooking the most delicious Russian dishes.

Her story is another inspirational one as she grew up in poverty helping her mother sell fruit on the street to make ends meet. Her father walked out when Natalia was still a toddler and she grew up with two half-sisters one of whom has cerebral palsy. She left Russia as a teenager forging her career in Paris and is now not only a mother of three but one of the hardest working and campaigning models around. I’ve got nothing but respect for her and am thrilled that caramel baby and child got involved in fund raising for her Naked Heart Foundation.

If you’d like to support the Naked Heart Foundation you can find out more on their website or skip straight to

Go on… you’re only going to spend your money on skinny lattes otherwise. 😉

HOUSE ROCES – A GLASS BOX THAT DOESN’T PUT YOU ON SHOW

25 September 2013

Quite naturally lines are important for architects Govaert & Vanhoutte and the design for House Roces in the surrounding forest of Bruges, Belgium reflect their linear passion.

The long and narrow plot gives the house it’s blueprint and has been called a horizontal box by the architects. The aim was to create a contrast to the surrounding forest and it’s vertical lines of trees thus building a glass pavilion that sits partially underground and is anchored along one side by a solid concrete wall.

The ground/garden level accommodates the entrance, kitchen, dining and living area including a fireplace. The bedrooms are situated at the end of the house one above the other and a ramp connects the children’s bedrooms with the living room. Parking is kept underground and sits on a level with the sunken outdoor swimming pool that runs the length of the house.

It’s a brave concept and I love how this unusual space meets all requirements of modern living, including no doubt much fun in the swimming pool and rolling around on the ramp for the kids. The almost double height ceiling and extensive use of glass is reminiscent of being in an art gallery but at the same time the surrounding forest prevents the feeling of being on show and makes it feel secluded.

A lovely concept beautifully captured by photographer Tim Van de Velde.

‘NEXT LIBERTY’ YOUTH THEATRE MAGAZINE BY MOODLEY

24 September 2013

Graphic designers are technical wizards. They have to be in this day and age. They can re-create pretty much anything on screen but as much as I’ve embraced technology I LOVE crafting things with my own hands and by the looks of it I’m not the only designer who does.

This season’s magazine for youth theatre Next Liberty in Graz, Austria, had some very enthusiastic designers from Moodley Brand Identity working on the project and I can totally understand why. We are all children inside and as a creative person you have to connect with that inner child and paint, cut, paste and stick sometimes.

next liberty youth theatre magazine by moodley

The most important people for Next Liberty are of course the audience and they are little people with HUGE imagination and enthusiasm. Engaging their audience and living up to their expectation and imagination is the only way to achieve authenticity for their plays. Moodley clearly recognised that and came up with an equally playful and authentic concept for their new season’s magazine where every detail has meaning just like it does on stage.

Thousands of paper clippings were lovingly made into collages and new typography was handcrafted for this project which also incorporates a new look website. As a designer this back-to-basics-handcrafty-cutting-and-pasting makes me smile and I want to see more of it. Trust me, creating collages on the computer just does not have the same effect and the fact that Moodley were not afraid to push this labour intensive method through makes them a worthy feature for Stylejuicer. I’m sure there were a lot of safer routes to go down and I admire the team and client for their confidence and stamina resulting in a magazine that stands out and shines with fairy wings and glitter glue.

Actually it’s the second time I’m featuring Moodley as they are just so utterly brilliant. To see their epic branding for Hotel Daniel click here.

CURIOUS FACT:

Did you know that September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day? Aye Capt’n! And it has become a holiday for members of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Sadly, Stylejuicer missed it this year but watch out 2014!

CARAMEL BABY AND CHILD – A PERSONAL STORY

20 September 2013

As far as inspirational stories go Eva Karayiannis’s is right up there. Born in Cyprus and raised in Athens Eva trained as a lawyer but started exploring ideas and designs around her kitchen table, sourcing artisan knitwear and garments from independent craftsmen and opening her first caramel baby and child shop in 1999 in London’s chic Chelsea. She says:

I wanted to find a modern, distinctive style, which could be individual – yet at the same time luxurious and understated.

I love the fact that caramel often references the charm of vintage pieces and pushes the boundaries of the archetypal childrenswear colour palette, creating a playful rhythm of layering colours and textures. Eva is passionate about exquisite quality and design and aims to use as many British materials and artisan techniques as possible, including Scottish cashmere, Fairisle knitting techniques, traditional tweeds and the use of both Liberty and original prints which are designed in-house and produced in the UK.

Opening a new store almost every two years and distributing through over 100 independent retailers caramel has now grown into a global lifestyle brand and has recently opened up a store in Singapore.

With their distinctive and unconventional styling caramel baby and child clothing is immediately recognisable and Eva believes that the customer can sense that it’s still a very personal company.

I must say I love the concept as well as the product and have decided to make this a two-part feature. Today you’ll get a peek at caramel’s baby clothes and next week you can drool over the children’s wear range for AW 2013.
