COURTYARD EXTENSION BY RITZ AND GHOUGASSIAN

I seem to be drawn to Australian architecture and interior design at the moment especially this amazing contemporary courtyard extension to a traditional federation-style cottage in the leafy suburb of Prahran in Melbourne.

Maybe it’s the incredible light that brightens up even the darkest interior down under or maybe it’s the holiday vibe that comes with lush greenery and inside outside living spaces that have me captivated!? Actually, I think the Australians have a real ease mixing materials, textures and colours. They take the best from the rest of the world and give it their own twist.

Today’s home by Ritz and Ghougassian is no exception with industrial block work unplastered and raw inside and outside in stark contrast to the calm and serene white washed courtyards at both ends of the extension. The space is contemporary and minimal with dark wooden cabinets and a large plump sofa from which you’d struggle to get me up. Good job the sofa is likely to be out of my price range.

If you like this courtyard house you’d enjoy this one and drool over this one too. Hope this has cheered you up.

DANISH COTTAGE WITH HIGH CEILINGS

22 June 2017

danish cottage, high ceilings, wooden cottage, scandinavian living, trend, style, inspiration, sloping ceiling, dinesen floorboards, light, space

You don’t really associate wooden cottages with high ceilings but this Danish home built in 2008 has been cleverly designed so that the main living / kitchen / dining area has 7m high sloping ceilings which not only harness lots of light but add a sense of generosity and space. Paint it all white and add some Dinesen floorboards and you’ve got the perfect backdrop for Scandinavian living.

You can see more of this stunning Danish cottage over here.

HOUSE W, TAIPEI | BRINGING IN LIGHT, PLANTS AND AIR

2 March 2017

house w, taipei, taiwan, townhouse, kc design studio, air, light, plants, structural glass, semi transparent, metal mesh facade, trend, industrial look, concrete, architecture, interiors

Despite being located in a densely populated area of Taipei in Taiwan KC design studio managed to bring light, plants and air into this small three storey townhouse simply called, House W.

To overcome the houses’ disadvantaged location KC design studio opened up the roof and installed structural glass as part of the flooring on every level. This transparent core lets light travel all the way to the ground floor giving much needed daylight to the open plan kitchen, dining and living area.

Their second radical decision was to set the facade back and putting a metal mesh in its place. This creates semi transparent small outside spaces on each floor allowing the owners to bring in plants and greens whilst giving much needed air flow and a wonderful space to sit and relax.

I’ve been featuring a lot of extraordinary architecture lately – partly because I haven’t come across many equally extraordinary interiors. But the main reason is that even though these houses are out of many people’s reach financially (certainly mine) I believe you can always pick up interesting details and ideas from spaces that have had less constraints on budgets. Boutique hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants as well as any public building incorporates a myriad of ideas, details and materials that can translate into your own home. All it needs is some closer inspection and an open mind.

This home is fascinating for me as they’ve achieved an open-plan, modern and industrial look on a vertical scale. Bringing in plants and greenery has softened the look and added another layer of interesting texture. I like the juxtaposition of rough concrete beams next to the sleek stainless steel kitchen which is cleverly integrated into the staircase to make use of the limited space and to keep the ground floor as wide and open as possible. A design trick you may have seen in my blog post of an Islington conversion here a few weeks ago.

I hope you share my enthusiasm for this unusual space and it’ll give you some inspiration for your own home. It’s certainly got me thinking.

CLEVER ISLINGTON CONVERSION BY LARISSA JOHNSTON ARCHITECTS

1 February 2017

islington conversion, larissa johnston, architects, plywood, connection, light, modern, simple, floorspace, floorplan, clean, storage, decor, interior, interior design, trend, style, minimalist

Phew… it’s February!

You may have noticed my absence on here during last month and though not physically absent – after all the kids are back at school – I’ve been struggling to find my mojo. Not just in terms of blogging but generally as I talked about in this post here.

Politics is not something I usually talk about on Stylejuicer but the events in the US are worrying me… a lot! Coupled with what seems like an endless stream of colds and coughs around the house no amount of interior porn design has managed to drag me out from under the proverbial duvet.

Until now… and it’s all down to plywood.

This fabulous conversion by Larissa Johnston Architects is in Islington, North London and I love how they have completely rearranged the house, taking out all internal walls and switching the bedrooms so now the living space including dining and kitchen are downstairs and connect to the rear garden via some full height glass sliding doors flooding the house with light. It’s a minimalist modern space where each nook and cranny has been put to good use which in turn maximises the floorspace on view making the house feel a lot bigger.

What really got me excited was the way they have managed to create a custom built unit that not only incorporates the stairs but also the kitchen and some clever storage areas. This plywood unit wraps up the stairs and gives the house an anchor connecting all the floors and making for an easy flow.

Larissa and her team have also made great use of the half landing making it a study area with more inbuilt shelving and a desk running along the window. I wish there were some shots of the downstairs WC and utility area as they are both concealed underneath the stairs and clad with plywood.

It may seem a bit geeky but I love seeing the bare bones of a house which is why I’m showing you the floorplan at the end of this post. I’ve got a feeling I’m not the only nerd on here.

Here’s to plywood!

HOUSE MAHER BY TRIBE STUDIO

21 March 2016

architecture, tribe studio, house maher, playful study, volume, light, contrasting brick, smooth plaster, offset ceiling, wow factor, pitched gable, double height, ceiling, style, trend

I’m a bit obsessed by architecture at the moment – have been for years actually – and was fascinated when I came across House Maher by Tribe Studio.

This new build for a young family is set in suburban Willoughby, north of Sydney and Tribe Studio describe it eloquently as ‘a playful study in volume and light’.

The description is absolutely spot on when you study the photos more closely. I’m not only drawn to the contrasting brick and smooth plaster but in particular how clever the space has been divided up, keeping it open but still zoned.

I love the double height at the back of the house over the living / dining / cooking area and how the chandelier drops from the very top of the pitched roof through an opening in the ceiling. This offset second ceiling follows the pitched roof line and creates a narrow gallery used as a semi open workspace giving the interior it’s wow factor.

The more I study the photos the more details become apparent, eg the placement of the small window in the work gallery which echoes the large square window in the brick wall giving you views from the gallery into the garden and beyond.

I wish there were more photos and elevations form all sides as I can spot a double pitched gable which you can only see internally – all adding to House Maher’s playful character.
