PLACES TO GO | NORD HOUSE, AUSTRALIA

8 November 2016

interior design, style, styling, decor, melbourne, mornington peninsula, monochrome, textures, scandi style, scandinavia, contemporary living, luxury, urban, hale mercantile, flocca signature bedding, design conscious, urban, modern rustic, poss samperi, orchard keepers, nord house

Now that the days are getting shorter in the Northern hemisphere I couldn’t resist sharing images of Nord House in Australia with you. A Scandi style weekend getaway designed by Poss Samperi who also runs – and styled – Orchard Keepers, another holiday accommodation on the Mornington Peninsula which I blogged about here a while ago.

Though it feels as if she’s taken a more radical monochrome approach to the interior the same modern rustic Scandi style applies and textures from wood, sheepskin rugs and textiles give a wonderful relaxed but yet luxurious edge. I spot the daybed by Ilse Crawford from the latest IKEA Sinnerlig collection which is made out of jute and fits perfectly into the space.

The dramatic monochrome colour palette is most distinct when you look at the matt black kitchen units, complete with black tiling and grout, next to the brilliant white painted wooden flooring. It’s a stark contrast but one that evokes luxury and contemporary living aimed at the urban Melbourne crowd who can reach this oasis in a few hours.

I also spotted some rather lovely linen in the bedrooms with beautifully tufted edges and after some digging I found that this signature Flocca bedding is made by brand Hale Mercantile and also comes in a range of beautiful soft off-colours. Interestingly, Poss steered away from any of those tempting colours and stuck with greys, whites and beiges to achieve maximum impact and a stunning setting for the design-conscious urban crowd.

CONTEMPORARY WEEKEND HOME IN SKAGEN

10 October 2016

weekend home, skagen, denmark, coast, beach, sea, dunes, panoramic windows, cosy, modern, contemporary, modern rustic, bunk beds, architecture, customise, cedar wood, interior design, style, trend, styling, location

I was blown away when I saw this contemporary weekend home in Skagen, Denmark. Nestled in amongst the dunes and protected from the worst of the weather this home reminds me of the coastline where I grew up in Northern Germany and I got an immediate yearning for it. The pictures instantly brought back memories of salty air and sand between my toes and endless days playing on the beach, catching crabs, building sand castles, collecting driftwood and playing hide and seek in the dunes.

The large panoramic windows and cosy corner sofa make any TV or screen redundant as simply watching the weather and light change across the beach and sea is enough stimulus. The older I get the more I feel the need to disconnect and press the pause button on life. I get so carried away with the stream of new and exciting design that I sometimes feel my brain can’t process all the data and I long for a simpler life.

The house is a weekend home to two families and even though it’s a mere 54 sqm it sleeps eight with bedroom space being kept at a minimum by building bunk beds that are cosy yet offer privacy set behind the bathroom which serves as a room divider.

The main room is kept open plan and uncluttered and I adore the modern rustic look and the wrap around windows with it’s deep seats, perfect for lounging and enjoying the sun on a cold and windy day. The architect and owner wanted the space to feel as if it was carved out of one solid piece of wood and has used the finest cedar wood everywhere on the inside even customising the kitchen – who wouldn’t volunteer for the washing up when you have that view!?

If there ever was a perfect weekend location for me this would be it.

DOTTIR | NORDIC RESTAURANT IN BERLIN MITTE

27 September 2016

dottir, nordic restaurant, berlin, mitte, hip, deconstructed, renovation, original details, vintage, antique, lighting, bar stools, Victoria Eliasdóttir, interior design, interiors, decor, style, juxtaposition, old, new, drab, glamour, abstract paintings

I couldn’t resist showing you this stripped back but still quietly glamorous interior of restaurant Dottir in Berlin’s hip Mitte district where renowned Icelandic chef Victoria Eliasdóttir serves fresh Nordic cuisine.

The grand dimensions date back to the 1880s and many of the original details remain. I love how the interior design has been carefully kept in a state of semi renovation with some beautiful vintage items like the 1930s bar stools, large abstract paintings and some antique lighting. It’s a great juxtaposition of old and new, drab and glamour and feeds the imagination.

FUNCTION AND FORM 03 | NINA+CO AT DEAN STREET CAFE

16 September 2016

It’s not even a year since Tiff and I set up Function+Form with the hope to bring like-minded interior and design lovers together and stimulate engagement on a face-to-face level. I can not tell you how excited we were to see so many lovely people turn up to Function and Form 03 last Saturday for breakfast at the Dean Street Cafe in London to hear the story behind this exceptional venue and it’s interior designer Nina Woodcroft.

Though life is becoming evermore transient Tiff and I feel that values such as good design, quality, form, function and sustainability remain a constant which is our benchmark when deciding on where to hold our events and who to partner with.

The Dean Street Cafe owned and run by UK charity Centrepoint lent itself perfectly to hosting Function+Form 03 and we were thrilled when Nina agreed to fly over from Amsterdam to be with us on the day and talk us through her professional journey as well as her concept behind the interior design of the cafe.

For me Nina personifies the apprenticeship concept when she took the brave step straight after school to start work immediately. Though not as a formal apprentice but as a receptionist in an interior design firm where her attitude, engagement and curiosity for the industry saw her progressing to design assistant and designer before being made partner working on multi-million pound projects from hotels to residential and retail – all within the space of ten years.

The experience gave her confidence to set up her own studio in 2014 where she can now adhere to her own standards of sustainable sourcing and low-impact on the environment as well as fitting projects around her passion for travelling. Like many self-employed people it’s all in the mix for her and though she does have her ‘bread and butter’ clients she makes a deliberate choice to work on social enterprise projects to fulfil her duty of increasing client and consumer awareness and promoting the notion of wellbeing.

Speaking about her project at Dean Street Cafe she says:

“It was a privilege to work with Centrepoint. This was an opportunity to give the Client something interesting and creative to help them stand out from a large crowd and to offer Soho’s locals and visitors a fresh, conscious and sustainable alternative. I wanted the space to reflect the sanctuary from the outside world that the charity provides for vulnerable young people. The opportunity to be part of a busy, vibrant space for homeless young people to turn their lives around was a huge inspiration.”

Centrepoint in turn couldn’t be happier with the solution as John Raynham, Head of Innovation and Enterprise at Centrepoint, states:

“Nina and Centrepoint were on the same page from the start. We both wanted an environmentally and socially sustainable solution and this theme runs throughout the project. Our aim is to motivate homeless young people to get into work and Nina has created a beautiful and authentic environment that will inspire those working here to excel.”

For me this last sentence is the essence of why (interior) design is so important to us: it makes us better people! Our surroundings have a huge impact on us as human beings and at the cafe young homeless people can get training to become a barista or work in the hospitality sector.

I’ve totally fallen in love with Nina’s simple and modern design, her combination of materials, attention to detail, the different levels of lighting and clever design elements like the pegboard style wall and integrated seating at the large feature windows. It’s a totally flexible venue space and tables and chairs can be easily hidden in the deep cupboards that form part of the pegboard wall. Available for venue hire, functions and training purposes during the week the cafe comes into it’s own at the weekend when it not offers you delicious locally sourced food and drinks but one of the only sunny terraces in the center of town.

Go and check it out and support the good work!

On another note… Nina’s favourite meal of the day is breakfast and she has recently released a ceramic breakfast collection which I’ve written about here. There are some stunning special edition mugs which can be purchased from At The Table via this link.

Our breakfast was sponsored by the lovely ladies from Luminary Bakery – another of Nina’s social enterprise projects. Exceptional Juice and Mylk from The East London Juice Company – resident at the Ace Hotel. And of course by head chef Dean Masters who managed to put everything together in record time.

MODERN RUSTIC | FRENCH COUNTRY HOUSE

14 September 2016

modern, rustic, french country house, camargue, original details, stone wall, exposed wooden beams, mix, decor, interior, interior style, interior design, terrazzo floor, stainless steel bathroom sink, design

We’re having a mini heatwave here in the UK and I thought this modern rustic french country house would suit the unseasonally hot weather.

It is situated in the Camargue near Arles and home to Pierre and Josephine Capelli and their two children, Jeanne and Robinson 21 and 23 years. The traditional farmhouse has been modernised throughout but kept some original details like the old stone wall in the living area and the exposed wooden beams in the dining room.

The interior presents a wonderful mix of old and new, modern and rustic which gives the space real interest and I love how they’ve painted some old pieces of furniture black which contrasts beautifully with the white-washed interior. A major show stopper is the new terrazzo floor which unites the downstairs kitchen, dining and living areas and must be wonderfully cool underfoot during the hot summer months.

Another interesting design piece is the stainless steel bathroom sink which runs along the whole length of the bathroom and is separated by chunky wooden boards which not only divide the uni-sink but present a convenient space to place your toiletries – now that’s what I call modern rustic style.
