I seem to be drawn to Australian architecture and interior design at the moment especially this amazing contemporary courtyard extension to a traditional federation-style cottage in the leafy suburb of Prahran in Melbourne.

Maybe it’s the incredible light that brightens up even the darkest interior down under or maybe it’s the holiday vibe that comes with lush greenery and inside outside living spaces that have me captivated!? Actually, I think the Australians have a real ease mixing materials, textures and colours. They take the best from the rest of the world and give it their own twist.

Today’s home by Ritz and Ghougassian is no exception with industrial block work unplastered and raw inside and outside in stark contrast to the calm and serene white washed courtyards at both ends of the extension. The space is contemporary and minimal with dark wooden cabinets and a large plump sofa from which you’d struggle to get me up. Good job the sofa is likely to be out of my price range.

NEW YORK GRAMERCY PARK RENOVATION BY SHEEP AND STONE

I’m absolutely loving the double height space in this apartment which was expertly renovated by sheep and stone interiors in Gramercy Park, New York.

The brick wall is such a great feature especially with a distressed white wash and contributes to the industrial warehouse feel of this triplex apartment close to Manhattan’s East Village. Naturally a dramatic lighting feature above the dining table is a must and the cloud 37 by Aparatus fits the space perfectly. As do the In Between chairs by Sami Kallio for and tradition in smoked oak, a modern design classic and – if Santa is reading – one of my favourites!

I love the splashes of dark contrasts throughout the light and mostly white apartment, especially the black painted walls in the second bathroom which create a luxurious intimate feel in combination with the marble sink and distressed metal front. Just so sumptuous and tactile in a totally contemporary way.

LOFT LOVE IN VIENNA | ANNABELL KUTUCU

It’s been a bit quiet on here I know… why? Well, just life taking over once again. *sighs* House renovations, full time job, kids and more DIY and more work and more kids, haha only kidding about the more kids part. Joke!

Sooooo… I thought I’d better come back with a bang and OMG isn’t this loft apartment just perfect!? One of my favourite interior designers, Annabell Kutucu – she of Casa Cook fame and über-cool Berlin Apartment reno (here) – has done it again. This time she’s waved her magic interior wand around this 300sqm apartment in Vienna for a ‘well-travelled design aficionado’ as she describes her client.

I love how she manages to create understated luxury with a relaxed boho vibe through the use of a monochrome, earthy colour palette and a multitude of textures and materials. Custom-made pieces of furniture, objects d’art and vintage mid-century finds create focal points and blend seamlessly with the rough linen carpets on smooth polished concrete. The interior becomes an eclectic mix that oozes luxury as well as relaxed holiday vibes, a perfect place to entertain your hipster friends as well as chill out after the a delicious fusion food supper. *dreams*

BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE RENOVATION BY SHAPELESS STUDIO

I love finding inspiration from around the world and this Brooklyn brownstone renovation by shapeless studio is a great example how historical detailing combined with minimal, modern design can create a stunning look.

Built in 1884 the place was in a state of disrepair and needed a gut renovation whilst carefully restoring the original detailing. The open plan kitchen / dining area is my favourite aspect with clean lines and dark cabinets contrasting with white walls. I particularly love the new-old wooden workbench in the center as an island unit. A beautiful solid piece of furniture that will just get better with age.

GREAT JONES NOHO LOFT BY UNION STUDIO

Another week – another loft! This time it’s the Great Jones NoHo loft in New York designed by California based furniture and interior design company Union Studio who created some exceptional pieces of bespoke furniture for the space.

Their passion for craftsmanship and use of steel reminds me of Danes Overgaard & Dyrman and I love the rich contrasting colour palette of the loft from black floorboards and window frames to grey walls and white ceilings. Interesting textures are everywhere from exposed brick walls to a tiled black headboard, a bespoke mahogany bath tub as well as some carefully chosen vintage finds and contemporary designer lighting and furniture.

The Crittall style steel doors and exposed pipes and wires remind you of the loft’s industrial past as a factory which has now been perfectly adapted for modern living with a rich and characterful open plan layout. A wonderful project by Union Studio’s founder Matthew Bear who produces heirloom quality furniture and handcrafted architecture with selected craftspeople throughout the Bay area.

I can’t wait to see Union Studio’s next project.
