BLACK AND WHITE HOME IN CONVERTED FACTORY

18 September 2014

As you know I’m a huge fan of black and white interiors and today’s home has the added advantage that it’s located in an old converted factory in Vasa, Finland. Bit of a dream set-up for me…

I love all the industrial elements that the couple have included in their interior design, especially the lighting like the oversized lamps, cluster of steel cage-lightbulbs and tripod studio light. Quirky finds like the oversized signage letter ‘Z’ and old leather boxing gloves add interest and are right on the typography and old school gym trend at the moment.

I also like how they’ve incorporated clever little DIYs like the rustic wooden plank with black iron pegs and coffee table on wheels reminiscent of the buildings manufacturing past. By keeping the colour palette very neutral with walls and ceilings in white and furniture mostly black it almost feels like an exhibition space setting their eclectic pieces perfectly in scene.

Last but not least I’ve got to confess that I’ve got a major crush on that huge black trunk serving as a bedside table – any ideas where I can get hold of one!?

INTERIORS CRUSH | OFF THE GRID IN EXTREMADURA

13 September 2014

off the grid, extremadura, spain, abaton architects, green, environmentally friendly, energy, self sufficient, material mix, old and new, restoration, stables, this is paper, photovoltaic, hydro power, pool, pure water, streams, fountain, interior design, style, trend, family home

Happy Saturday folks! I had an entirely different post planned for this weekend but when I came across the Off Grid Home in Extremadura via This Is Paper I was smitten and everything else went into drafts.

It’s a stunning house! I mean seriously st-un-nig and I hope you’ll enjoy this feature as it’s an amazing achievement by Ábaton Architecture who transformed this off the grid abandoned stable, high on a hill and far from city water or electricity into a family home respecting nature and the history of the building.

After careful consideration they decided to build from scratch as the stable was in a terrible state in the Spanish province of Cáceres which borders Portugal. I’m in awe at how expertly Abaton blended old and new materials like concrete and steel with recycled stone, limestone floors and oak. The interior connects everywhere with the surrounding countryside with large picture frame windows making the most of the view and bathrooms facing the interior courtyard and the stone water fountain. Idyllic, charming, modern, stylish, cool, clever… I’m seriously running out of superlatives.

To top it all off it is completely self-sufficient producing green energy through photovoltaic and hydro power for electricity and capturing the pure water from two streams for drinking and bathing with the swimming pool as a holding tank for irrigation.

The building’s southern orientation makes the most of the views and my only problem with living there would be the remote location – though I think I’d be able to overcome that. Ah… gorge yourself on the photos and make sure to give Stylejuicer a thumbs up on Facebook.

Happy weekend!

INTERIOR INSPIRATION | LAURENCE SIMONCINI

21 August 2014

Laurence-Simoncini-Ile-De-Re-by-Karel-Balas-01

Today’s interior inspiration is another ‘corker’ from the Ile De Ré, off the west coast of France. Funnily enough it’s been photographed by Karel Balas whose summer house is also located on the chic island and was featured here on Monday.

It’s the holiday home of Laurence Simoncini, co-founder of Parisian concept store Serendipity and her dramatic and consistent design shows what a creative talent she is. Built in the middle of coastal marshland this single story home with black wooden cladding blends effortlessly into the landscape and I adore the ancient gnarled and twisted tree surrounded by pebbles and the desert like garden design which is easily maintained.

Inside there’s a very quiet and serene atmosphere where the emphasis is on raw and natural materials, textures and fabrics. Polished concrete, lime washed walls, wooden flooring – everything is kept in a wonderful brown, grey and black palette with carefully selected art objects, modern lighting, drift wood seats, hand-thrown ceramics and ornate vintage candle sticks blending perfectly.

No quirky touches or bright colours just an amazingly luxurious interior that still feels inviting. Granted you have to imagine your everyday objects like remote controls, newspapers, post-it notes, socks and shoes flying around. I know I might be stating the obvious but sometimes we forget how highly styled these shots are to show off the interior concept for the glossy magazines.

My favourite pieces have to be the fireplace, the double bed sitting on railway sleepers and how wonderful is that woven nest-like seat Laurence poses on with her adorable children!?

INTERIORS CRUSH | KAREL BALAS HOLIDAY HOME

18 August 2014

Ile-De-Re-Karel-Balas-summer-house-01

This is the holiday home of Karel Balas, sublime photographer, art director and editor of French Milk magazine, founded with his wife over 10 years ago.

Their summer home on the Ile De Ré is a rustic residence where nothing is too polished or precious. The relaxed atmosphere comes across in the photos and I like their laid-back mix of flea market finds and mix of materials all kept within a neutral colour palette of greys, browns, black and off-white.

Painted stone walls and plenty of wood from floor to ceiling including some drift wood give warmth and texture and pose as a backdrop for vintage pieces like ornate mirrors, antlers, workbench and freestanding bathtub. I like their carefully selected lighting which is mostly modern and stand out amongst the pared back boho style.

Holiday homes are for relaxation and I can’t help but imagine Karel and his wife would throw some cool parties in their back yard with plenty of local wine and fresh fish. Their cool kids flopping in one of the deep sofas and somebody playing guitar. Ok, maybe my imagination is running a bit wild but it is only credit to Karel’s evocative photography. A true Interiors Crush.

Like this summer house on the Ile De Ré? Pop back soon for another stunning property later this week.
A plus tard.

PLACES TO GO | VILLA KALOS, ITHACA

8 August 2014

villa kalos, greece, travel, island, ithaca, photographer, gerda genis, robbert koene, ruin, restoration, villa, agean sea, luxury, boutique, interior design, understated, pool, polished concrete, design, style, trend, guest house

From Mykonos to Villa Kalos, Ithaca – it’s Greek island hopping with Stylejuicer this week. 😉

This stunning villa was an abandoned ruin just over four years ago when South African photographers Gerda Genis and Robbert Koene fell in love with it. The breathtaking views of the Aegan Sea and the peaceful surrounding countryside with almond trees and olive groves make this a prime spot to relax and recharge with a deliberate choice of no technology (scary, but necessary every once in a while).

The couple restored the property with much love and care and lots of help from the locals converting it into an understated boutique villa with 4 bedrooms and 4 en-suite bathrooms, a salt-water pool, terraced gardens and 6,000 sqm of land to get lost in.

I have to say that I’ve fallen in love with the interior which is a competent mix of old and new and I like that they kept some of the old stone walls and juxtaposed them with polished concrete floors and exquisite furnishings and fabrics. Everything is kept in a luxurious neutral colour palette of whites, greys and browns which puts even more emphasis on the external beauty of the turquoise sea, bright blue sky and green rolling countryside.

What a perfect place to spend some quality time with friends and family and simply: just be.

Wishing you all a happy weekend!
