ARCHITECTURE | THE ARK SHELTER

27 October 2016

ark shelter, architecture, architect, zero impact, design, style, minimalist, natural wood, back to nature, woodburner, philosophy, landscape, cabin, module, ecological

When I came across the Ark Shelter I was immediately drawn in. A mobile cabin with zero impact placed anywhere you like. Merging into the landscape, no wifi or TV just nature and the people you’re with. Hit the reset button and go back to basics.

Ironically technology has made most of our lives even more frantic with the majority of the population glued to their phones and mild anxiety attacks when there’s no wifi. So the ultimate luxury is now a life away from the stresses of everyday life, stepping off the grid and letting our mind calm down by emerging ourselves and engaging with nature. Really opening up every sense and experiencing life and what it is to be alive. I might be going a bit philosophical on you but I truly believe that we all need that engagement with nature, it keeps us sane, grounds us and heals.

So the clever architects behind the ARK shelter have come up with this extraordinary module, clad in black on the outside and natural wood on the inside with a central woodburner and innovative space saving solutions so the minimal clean lines don’t distract from the surrounding landscape.

The simple constructed box has a variety of opening platforms and window options and can be extended and made to fit your specifications before being placed where ever you like. Personally I’d like mine to be set amongst the dunes on a beach and take in the ever changing light and weather from my panoramic bedroom window or sit on the sundeck with a cup of coffee, smelling the salty air and listening to the wind and sounds of the sea.

To read more about ARK’s philosophy head over here and be inspired.

RESTORED MOUNTAIN RETREAT BY SCOTT AND SCOTT

15 February 2016

Restored, Mountain, Retreat, Canada, scott and scott, architects, vancouver, modern rustic, wood, plywood, concrete flooring, industrial, minimal, cabin, steel staircase, marble kitchen sink, trend, style, styling, interior design, decor

This restored mountain retreat has been brought into the 21st century by Scott & Scott Architects and ticks all my modern rustic boxes.

Lots of warm wood – from plywood wall dividers to old beams – is tamed by an industrial concrete floor and steel staircase as well as minimal white walls. The simple wooden furniture is covered in fluffy sheep skins and the inbuilt fireplace gives that warm cabin feeling. I love how the light floods through the open steel staircase from the first floor giving it real prominence and drama.

The most stunning feature has to be the kitchen sink though which has been carved out of one single chunky slab of marble. What a feat!

NORWEGIAN CHRISTMAS CABIN DECOR

4 December 2014

norwegian, christmas, cabin, decor, home, weekend, mountains, skiing, snow, retreat, interior design, rustic modern, calm, relaxed, vintage finds, mix, bolina, interior boutique, bespoke kitchen, reclaimed, recycled, wooden planks, barn

December is going to be even more manic than usual for me as we’re preparing to move house at the end of the month. Only 10min down the road but I’ve got no idea how to get it done… yet. I’m sure some last minute inspiration, read childcare (any volunteers?), is going to turn up and it’ll all be fine. Famous last words, eh!?

Until then I’m burying my head firmly in the sand, or snow if this idyllic Norwegian Christmas cabin decor is anything to go by.

The calm and relaxed atmosphere is just what I need at the moment and I love how all the vintage finds mix in beautifully with new home decor from shops like Tine K Home and the owners online interior boutique Bolina.

The white floors and ceilings really lift the interior and draw the eye to the opposing black walls and the feature fire place. It’s a simple and rustic setting with a bespoke kitchen made from reclaimed planks from an old barn and personal memories on display giving it warmth and character.

A fabulous mountain retreat and perfect for sticking my head in the snow.

MODERN RUSTIC CABIN IN THE PYRENEES

17 November 2014

modern rustic, textures, materials, renovation, restoration, stone house, farm, mountains, nature, pyrenees, spanish, carlos nicolau, relax, simple life, minimal, concrete, fireplace, bespoke, roof, exposed beams, oak, cabin, trend, style, interior, home, weekend

Let’s kickstart the week with a gorgeous example of Modern Rustic with wonderful textures and contrasting materials. A beautifully renovated stone house in the Spanish Pyrenees that retains it’s character despite the modernisation.

Restored and modernised by architect Carlos Nicolau his brief was to create a weekend get away where his clients could relax and live a simpler life. They wanted a complete antidote to their busy lifestyles in the city and reconnect with nature. The dilapidated building is an old farm in the mountains and needed it’s facade restoring as well as a new roof, running water and electricity.

I love the large open-plan living area divided by a minimal concrete fireplace open on two sides so the flames are visible from the bedroom and the living area. The exposed oak beams give a great sense of height and rest on three original stone pillars. The new floor-to-ceiling oak framed windows bring in lots of light and the deep window frames serve as extra seating to admire the view – perfect for some daydreaming.

Another favourite of mine is the clever bespoke kitchen island designed in black metal which looks like a large table and has ample space for preparation and cooking. The in-built storage doors are made of large oak boards that blend well with the flooring.

This is a cabin after my own taste and I love the combination of rough and smooth surfaces, cold and warm materials and the muted colour palette. I’m pretty sure I’d loose myself daydreaming on one of those window seats.

CONTEMPORARY ALPINE CABINS IN THE DOLOMITES

1 October 2014

architecture, dolomites, south tyrol, contemporary, alpine, cabin, pedevilla architects, family residence, holiday rental, sustainable, local materials, stone, larch, experience, minimal, sleek, concrete, trend, style

Are you ready for some architecture? I’ve got just the right project for you today – a contemporary take on traditional alpine cabins.

Located in South Tyrol and designed by Pedevilla Architects this is the architects own family residence with an adjacent holiday rental. A smart move as the project has already been nominated for a few awards and I imagine will receive a lot of press over the next year hence there’ll be a lot of demand to inspect and experience the architecture as well as the breathtaking location.

The first thing that struck me was the contrast between the dark exterior and the bright interior with lots of light flooding in through large windows which also provide the most stunning views over the mountains. Great emphasis has been placed on sustainability and using local materials like local stone and alpine larch.

The house captivates with interesting angles and views of the surrounding landscape with no traditional beams in sight. Instead there is a wonderful mix of materials on display with untreated local timber floors, door and window frames contrasting with concrete walls and large glass windows. I love the sleek interior with large and small details like the double height living space, an open timber frame doubling up as a book shelf and wall and a thick rope as a handrail.

A place to fall in love with and one that architecture and design enthusiasts have a chance to experience for themselves. Just follow this link and book your stay at La Pedevilla.
