DREAM HOLIDAY HOME | BEACH HOUSE EL SALVADOR

20 July 2015

dream holiday home, el salvador, beach house, central america, interior design, polished concrete, plam tree leaves, shade, relax, chill out, open plan, outdoor, scandinavian theme, a frame construction, hot, summer, vacation, watermelon daiquiri

Another Dream Holiday Home today this time in El Salvador and yes, I did have to look up where exactly that was/is! For those of you with equally shaky geography it’s in Central America, wedged in between Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala though for today’s eye candy purpose it doesn’t actually matter where this treasure is located as the pictures by Gaelle Le Boulicaut for Elle Decoration Philippines speak volumes.

I can just feel the heat looking at these shots and am in love with the large open plan outdoor living layout complete with kitchen and living / dining / chill out area. Beautiful polished concrete and a simple wooden A frame construction thatched with palm tree leaves provide shade during hot summer months and some colourful pops of yellow and lush green vegetation liven up the neutral almost Scandinavian interior scheme.

Only thing I’d add is a watermelon daiquiri and some relaxing tunes.

STYLIST’S BLUE BEACH HOUSE IN SYDNEY

27 June 2014

Modernist-Beach-House-Sydney-01

This beautiful modernist beach house in Sydney was recently featured in Australia’s Inside Out Magazine – one of my favourites for interior eye candy from down under.

It belongs to interior stylist Karen Kelly Tarasin and has been lovingly filled with Nordic modernist furniture and a few selected modern pieces like the Muuto lamps above the dining table and sofa.

Maybe it’s the lighting or the fresh green and exotic leaves that peek through the windows but this home feels so fresh and cozy to me. I notice there are plants and flowers on display everywhere but all blending in apart from the ‘Rio’ garden column in the hallway which houses six individual vases for flower displays.

My favourite piece of art has to be the bull skull over the classic Saarinen ‘Tulip’ dining table – aren’t those horns magnificent!? I wonder what the emerald green decoration on the skull is.

I like how the overall colour palette is pared back and dominated by white, blonde wood and earthy tones with a few navy accents. Even the artwork of mostly black and white photography blends in with the owners collection of vintage Danish furniture and makes this home feel calm and peaceful.

Interestingly the outside is painted in a strong Matisse blue and a complete contrast to the serene inside.

What do you make of this bold contrast?

BEACH HOUSE FILLED WITH CHARACTER

6 May 2014

Beach-House-by-Brooke-Holm-via-Share-Design-11

I saw this character filled Australian beach house back in the autumn on Share Design and thought it would be a great Springtime feature because of the slightly retro and colourful interior. Photography and styling is by one of my favourite Australian duos Brooke Holm and Marsha Golemac who seem to be on the proverbial roll.

I love the architecture of the house which is reminiscent of a house boat with it’s long, two-storey shape and wide decks at different levels. The design was mostly brought to life by the owners themselves who took a photo from Wallpaper magazine as inspiration. Not a bad starting point!

My favourite element has to be the enclosed glass spiral staircase and the timber cladding – horizontal (and white) inside, contrasting with vertical (and black) on the outside blending nicely into the rugged Victorian landscape.

Another reason I wanted to share this project with you is the unique interior with it’s mint green kitchen cabinets and multitude of colours and fabric patterns throughout the house against a very Scandinavian backdrop of white walls and ceiling which calms it down just enough not to be overbearing.

And how cute is that little tree house with it’s own rope ladder and boat at the end of the garden!? My kids would have a ball in there!

SORRENTO BEACH HOUSE BY SHAREEN JOEL DESIGN

17 April 2014

Sorrento-Beach-House-Shareen-Joel-Design-via-Stylejuicer-07

This beautiful weekend getaway on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria belongs to interior designer and founder of inspiration blog Share Design Shareen Joel and her family of four. I’m rather envious of her little gem as in my opinion it has all the components that a home-from-home should have: set in a great (coastal) location with a sociable layout and a simple, casual and relaxed interior.

Cleverly integrated into the coastal landscape the house with it’s L-shaped floor plan is easy to live in centering around a sheltered decked terrace and an old Moonah tree. The natural light flooding in from those gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows helps with the flow of the semi open-plan space where the living and kitchen/dining areas are partitioned off with a (kitchen) storage unit and integrated wood burner. A sign that even in Victoria it does get chilly which for some reason I find hard to fathom.

What I love most about the house is the black timber cladding and contrasting natural timber window frames and doors. On entering the space is almost completely white with Larch floorboards and a mix of vintage and design pieces. Accent colours are kept to a minimum and only provided through crockery and soft furnishings. The overall feel is very clean and minimalist with natural textures like wood and worn leather chairs taking the lead.

I wish there were more shots of the outside of the house and the surrounding landscape as I’m sure the coastline must be beautiful and I read that Shareen’s husband and son are sailing nuts. Maybe the outside shower with the old fashioned zinc tub is for them to rinse off after a tough ride on the ocean waves!?

COLOUR BLOCK BEACH HOUSE BY STUDIO UDA

1 August 2013

This beach side apartment and holiday home in Juan les Pins, France is referred to as the ‘fun house’ by their creators and architects Studio UdA.

‘Fun’ is a fitting description for the interior design that tackles the concepts of holiday time and sharing this tiny space of 40sqm inside an apartment block dating back to the 60s and 70s. The view of the sea is arguably the apartments key selling point and the brief was to provide a spacious lounge area and two separate sleeping quarters, all with sea views. This led to the creation of lightweight structures inside the apartment that are easy to assemble, relatively inexpensive and can be set up according to the inhabitant’s taste and whims, while constantly offering views towards the outside. Well, how much fun is that!? You can move your bedroom around if you feel like it.

A coastal colour scheme is reflected inside and just like life on the beach, the physical boundaries and cultural differences between people and the various activities they engage in are incorporated. From relaxation, children’s games or meal times, all activities are reflected in different shades and tones which enhances a sense of sharing inside the domestic space.

As Studio UdA describes:

‘Fun House’ because sharing is always an enjoyable experience.
