FOOD HEAVEN | OTTOLENGHI SWEET POTATO AND FIG SALAD

5 March 2014

Jerusalem, ottolenghi, sweet potato, fig, salad, goats cheese, gluten free, recipe, cookbook

Happy Wednesday everyone! Do you get bored of repeating the same old recipes but life is so hectic that you just don’t have the time to a) find a recipe, b) read said recipe, c) get all the super special ingredients from around 3 different shops and then you notice that it takes 2hrs to simmer. Argh! That’s what typically happens to me. We always eat healthily but seem to be stuck in a rut with the same old recipes over and over.

However, fret not, here’s an Annie fool-proof recipe that can be prepared in next to no time with screaming kids clinging to your leg, whilst sorting out the laundry, reading emails and painting your nails. Well, maybe not quite like that but seriously, I did this last week and got a big thumbs up from the cowboy though he did call it ‘girlie’ initially.

It’s a vegetarian salad from Yottam Ottolenghi’s Jerusalem cookbook and it’s best eaten with fresh figs though I have to say the ones I bought from the supermarket were really tasty though probably not as big as fresh ones would be.

OTTOLENGHI SWEET POTATO AND FIG SALAD
INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4):

4 small sweet potatoes (1kg in total)
5 tbsp olive oil
40ml balsamic vinegar (you can use a commercial rather than a premium aged grade)
20g caster sugar
12 spring onions, halved lengthways and cut into 4cm segments
1 red chilli, thinly sliced
6 fresh and ripe figs (240g in total), quartered
150g soft goat’s cheese, crumbled (optional)
Maldon sea salt and black pepper

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 240°C/220°C Fan/Gas Mark 9. Wash the sweet potatoes, halve them lengthways and then cut each again similarly into 3 long wedges.

Mix with 3 tablespoons of the olive oil, 2 teaspoons of salt and some black pepper. Spread the wedges out on a baking sheet, skin-side down, and cook for about 25 minutes until soft but not mushy. Remove from the oven and leave to cool down.

To make a balsamic reduction, place the balsamic vinegar and sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 2–4 minutes, or until it thickens. Be sure to remove the pan from the heat when the vinegar is still runnier than honey; it will continue to thicken as it cools. Stir in a drop of water before serving if it does become too thick to drizzle. Arrange the sweet potatoes on a serving platter.

Heat the remaining oil in a medium saucepan and add the spring onions and chilli. Fry on a medium heat for 4–5 minutes, stirring often, making sure not to burn the chilli, and then spoon the oil, onions and chilli over the sweet potatoes.

Dot the figs among the wedges and then drizzle over the balsamic reduction. Serve at room temperature with the cheese crumbled over.

More tasty salads by Nigel Slater, Jamie Oliver and Yottam Ottolenghi can be found on my previous post ‘Summer Salads’. Enjoy!

WHITING ARCHITECTS | RESTORED VICTORIAN TERRACE

4 March 2014

Whiting-Architects-Park-Street-via-Stylejuicer02

Whiting Architects seem to be all over the bloggersphere at the moment and rightly so as they’ve produced some beautiful interior designs and high quality work in the past couple of years. The architecture and interior design practice is based in Melbourne and run by husband and wife team Steve and Carole Whiting.

The featured Park Street project is in fact their family home and a great way to introduce and showcase their imaginative interior design and ideas.

The first thing that struck me was how well they’ve adopted and carefully restored the Victorian terrace to suit modern family life with a large kitchen, dining and family space on the ground floor and 2 further self-contained bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs. Always conscious not to rip the historic heart out of the house but keeping many of the original features like wall panellings, arches and mouldings intact.

The interior design is strikingly bold and confident with dark wooden floors and doors contrasting with mostly white walls. The black treads and rails of the staircase are a favourite feature of mine as they seductively lead you upstairs to an all white attic home office and studio space. What a peaceful and calm environment to be creative and one that I could totally see myself in *sigh*.

Their sense of playfulness comes through when you find out that the additional attic bedroom can only be reached via ropes and ladders for Steven’s daughter. What a lovely family home.

NOTE | As you can see Carole has immaculate taste and also sells fabulous homewares online via her Y10store.com with many items sourced or manufactured for specific projects within the practice.

COOL STUFF | ODE TO THINGS

3 March 2014

Cool-Stuff-Ode-To-Things-via-Stylejuicer02

Ode To Things popped into my world via my Pinterest feed. I was intrigued by the logo and the minute I lay eyes on their products I was hooked. This fabulous online microstore who are based in New England must have heard my mantra of simple, modern design and ordered everything off my secret wish list. How did they get into my head!?

I simply love their products! It’s all quite minimalist and a bit Japanese but with a European twist. A great mixture of simple but beautifully made and ultimately useful ‘things’. Objects that add style, utility and fun to our lives and their concise collection of everyday items brings together form, function and elegance.

I adore how enthusiastic they are about their products:

“These products are designed passionately and manufactured with high precision and craftsmanship. Objects to adore, admire and cherish everyday. Touch them. Feel them. Love, use and share them. Rave about them. That’s what we do.”

Well, I guess I’ve just done that!

INSTAGRAM #STYLINGCOMPETITION

1 March 2014

jenniferlevau-StylingCompetition

Listen up budding stylists and design lovers! There’s a friendly styling competition going over on instagram involving some of my favourite bloggers and stylists.

Follow the hashtag StylingCompetition and you’ll see daily shots from famous US bloggers like Jennifer Hagler and her husband Jeremiah as well as Skandi super stylist Lotta Agaton – I just made up that title for her, I’m sure she won’t mind. It’s fun to see what everybody comes up with, especially when it’s more of a spontaneous shot.

You can of course also follow me and my attempts at styling everyday life amongst the toys and chaos that our two boistrous little guys create. I always look for the beauty in everyday life which round here is never boring!

CALMING AND SOOTHING, VILLA WIENBERG

28 February 2014

Architecture, Residential, Family Home, Denmark, Aarhus, Villa Wienberg, Wood, White, Friis & Moltke, Wienberg Architects

I just can’t seem to get enough of Danish design at the moment. Today’s post is about Villa Wienberg, a family residence in Aarhus, Denmark created by Wienberg Architects and Friis & Moltke.

For me it exemplifies what Danish design is all about: clean lines, maximising light, use of natural materials and a clever connection of inside and outside. I love how the black cladding on the outside contrasts with the white corridors as it brings an element of surprise into play. Oiled oak boards were mostly used for the living areas where there was a need to feel warm and cosy as well as giving it a calming and soothing atmosphere.

The villa is situated amongst rich vegetation which was an essential part of the overall design. The owners wanted to create the illusion of a ‘little house in the forest’ and the plentiful foliage creates ever changing patterns of light and shadow inside and outside.

Though the project won the City of Aarhus Architecture Prize back in 2008, none of it feels dated and is a perfect example how great design is worth the investment.
