ETHICAL, ORGANIC AND A DASH OF ATTITUDE – MOI

11 July 2013

Scandinavian children’s wear brand Mói wants to inspire sustainable living and make the earth a better place through certified responsible and ethical production methods. They are commited to creating an eco-friendly product that is comfortable as well as stylish.

The classic designs are easy to mix and match and work for any occassion from playing to partying. I love the neutral colourpalette, soft fabrics and comfortable designs of the Spring/Summer 2013 collection that won’t need much convincing putting on. Their labels are printed on the inside to avoid that itching feeling so many of us adults have to put up with and all tags are made from recyclable materials to minimize harm to the enviroment.

A cute story accompanies their logo which is the name and symbol of an Icelandic raven that the designer’s family fed and sheltered for many years.

What a lucky bird!

Firstly, let me warn any vegetarians amongst my readers! There is mouth-watering photography of rare meat on display. A delicious project for every sense.

Mexican design agency La Tortilleria is one of my favourite studios and I’ve got a feeling I’ll be featuring them again. I’m showing (off) their branding work for Bodega Ocho here which is so different and beautiful that it had to be one of my first features on this blog.

As I wouldn’t be able to do their work justice I’ll let them explain for themselves the concept behind Bodega Ocho:

Bodega Ocho required an image that emphasized its intriguing character, full of mystery, in a relaxed atmosphere. For that reason, our goal was to create distinctive, highly graphic black and white work, something uncomplicated but unique. The final product allowed us to use different variants of the logo, applied to different items and fabrics. From its business stationery to its shopping bags, from its fabric napkins to its distinctively embossed mason jars. We developed a stylish yet fresh identity, to make sure Bodega Ocho’s image left an imprint on its client’s minds forever.

STUNNING MODERNIST VILLA IN SKIATHOS, GREECE

A breathtaking view and beautiful sunny surroundings always help when you’re building your dream home but this design has been meticulously thought through and the result is simply stunning.

The villa cleverly merges inside and outside, maximising the benefits of both and minimising the impact on the surrounding landscape. There are various flexible panels and glazed screens providing coziness without sacrificing the open-plan living.

The infinity pool is strategically placed making the most of the view and creating a cooling breeze over the terrace and into the living area. The design even has green credentials with photovoltaic panels powering the pool mechanics and grey-water recycling for irrigation and toilet flushing. Trees are integrated and stand undisturbed with a green roof that blends into the landscape.

Get ready to dive in and dream…

GUY-CANDY: SCORCHING HOT BEACHWEAR FOR MEN FROM H&M

8 July 2013

Since the heat wave in the UK shows no signs of abating I am going to freshen you all up with some ice-cool shots of… well, hot guys in cool beachwear. Take note, all very pin-able!

Everybody knows that H&M have got their price point right but they sure got their beachwear for men spot on this summer. From boardshorts and swim briefs to city suits with shorts their collection is fresh as a watermelon in terms of colour, pattern and cut.

Daniel Craig paved the way for tighter swim briefs which have become popular with guys that want to show off their hard work in the gym and dedication to healthy diets. Board shorts are also huge this summer and with a slimmer fit are not just a prerogative for the under 25s! Note Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Jackman are fans of the board short and they are both 40+ (hot) dads. Ok, they’re also insanely good looking, talented and rich BUT the point remains it’s your body shape and not the age that defines what suits you on the beach.

I totally dig the linen style summer suit with shorts look and I’m hoping this heat wave will bring out some brave and stylish dressing amongst British men. Be sure you give them an encouraging nod when you see one!

AIDA 2013 – AUSTRALIAN INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS

7 July 2013

I hope you weren’t expecting a synopsis about Verdi’s opera or a cruise ship. As you’ve probaly worked out by now AIDA is short for Australian Interior Design Awards and I’d like to show you four of this year’s winners today.

And boy, would I LOVE to a) live in THAT loft, b) go to THAT coffee shop, c) work at THAT office and d) my kids to go to THAT kindergarten. I’m consumed by interior design envy.

WINNER BEST RESIDENTIAL DECORATION & BEST INTERNATIONAL DESIGN

Two awards for Nexus Designs this year for their interior design of this huge NYC loft apartment. Here is how they describe their project and what the jury had to say:

Project description

Inspired by a colour palette based on the NSW Blue Mountains, This vast NYC loft apartment provides an oasis for our client’s hectic professional lives. The open plan loft space was cleverly designed and divided into three distinct areas providing the client with multiple living, dining and library zones.

Jury Citation

This interior demonstrates a highly sophisticated use of colour, with a brave and masterful control of the opposite palettes of purple and yellow. The spaces are fun and relaxed but executed with sophistication and restraint. Furniture items are perfectly scaled to suit the proportions of the spaces in which they are placed. This loft features decoration that is more than just surface and texture – it achieves sculptural, three-dimensional spaces through thoughtful furniture placement.

WINNER HOSPITALITY DESIGN

Zwei Interiors Architecture took this project to the limit and won with their ‘ode to the coffee bean’! Here is how they describe their project and what the jury had to say:

Project description

Code Black Coffee is the new roastery and headquarters of the Melbourne based Cafenatics operations. With the roasting process on full display and a strong use of raw black steel, stained OSB board and concrete, the space communicates an almost reverential ode to the coffee bean.

Jury Citation

The interiors of Code Black Coffee retain and enhance the essence of the enclosing structure in a lustrous and vibrant manner. Clever planning allows distinct activities of the Code Black Coffee business to complement each other within the combined spaces. The resulting transparency of operation activates the space and reveals all of Code Black’s operations in a relaxed and inviting manner. The designers have executed adept manipulation of raw and rustic materials, quality detailing and a holistic honesty in their approach to brand strategy.

WINNER WORKPLACE DESIGN

Elenberg Fraser managed to convince their client Slattery to re-design their office space according to the 1982 science fiction film Tron. A bold move but one that ultimately paid off and I LOVE it! Here is how they describe their project and what the jury had to say:

Project description

Slattery’s new fitout embraces the innovation and luxury of the uniforms and vehicles of Tron Legacy. Blonde timber floors flow up onto the walls, embedded graphics offer linear curves, and black, steel frames bring a touch of New York loft style to this high-key, white, light space.

Jury Citation

This is clearly a standout office. In this project, a sophisticated white palette is enriched with a subtle pattern applied to the walls, seductive lighting and the select introduction of fine black elements – from the thin steel-framed glazing used along corridors, to a punch of black on the ceiling in the form of a circular light. It requires great skill to use a domestic palette in an office environment, without having it feel residential. This is truly an office everyone would love to work in.

WINNER SUSTAINABILITY DESIGN

Brooking Design Architects came up with a beautiful and sustainable interior design concept for John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School (JSRACS) Kindergarten. Here is how they describe their project and what the jury had to say:

Project description

This project demonstrates a clear commitment to sustainability and its practical application. The project’s attention to materials selection, benign finishes, energy efficiency, natural light and double glazing all highlight a coherent suite of environmental features intelligently addressed through good design.

Jury Citation

A purpose built kindergarten teaching space founded on eco-design principles. With references to a Nordic style of design, the use of abundant natural light, birch plywood linings and the various expressionist colourful cabinetry forms results in an exciting space that promotes learning that is devoid of any institutional rhetoric.
