INSPIRED BY CHAGALL | NOCH MINI AW 2014/15

You might remember me introducing you to NOCH Mini, the boutique NYC based childrens wear brand a few weeks ago featuring their SS collection with the most adorable little models.

Well, guess what!? The cute models – who are the designer’s daughter and her friend – are back and you can get a glimpse of their latest innovative designs for AW shot by Woo Jin Hwang in a warehouse in Queens, NYC. This time the collection is inspired by Marc Chagall’s dreamy ‘Esquisse pour la vie’ painting, referencing the circus with jester-like harlequin pants, animated loop stitch knits resembling fur, carnival garland printed tops and bear-ear hats.

I’m not always a big fan of themes as I tend to go for classic designs that transcend seasons but the beautiful details and super soft, sustainable organic fabrics make NOCH stand out this AW.

INTERIORS CRUSH | MODERN BARN DESIGN, GOTLAND

21 July 2014

Jonas-Ingerstedt-Gotland-Barn-01

You know what I’m like with industrial spaces – *swoon* – and the same goes for barns. Let me be specific I like old barns with an innovative use of space and modern interior.

Today I’ve got just that – an INTERIORS CRUSH of epic proportions. It’s on the island of Gotland in Sweden and the unchanged exterior doesn’t give away what’s hidden inside.

It’s a beautiful modern space with lots of polished concrete and some free-standing industrial steel kitchen units. I saw this place in the latest edition of RUM and was ecstatic to find the shots via Jonas Ingerstedt’s site – for more head over there.

The inside of the barn stands in stark contrast to it’s turn of the century exterior and picturesque countryside which gives it extra wow factor. Unfortunately I don’t speak Danish but I imagine the owners must be in the design industry themselves as the sofas and cupboards look custom built out of whited washed wood.

The space has been completely gutted and the living / dining area is separated from the kitchen by what looks like an old chimney breast. A semi-open mezzanine sleeping platform is constructed by untreated wood and adds some warmth to the grey walls and floors. Overall the colour palette has been kept muted and ranges from white and shades of grey to a rich dark brown with only the untreated wood adding a hint of yellow and orange.

I like the customised group of 3 upturned terracotta flowerpots that serve as a movable side and sofa table and there are plenty of modern nordic design objects to be spotted like the floorlamp, dining chairs and table.

A remarkable interior project and a very unusual summer house on one of Sweden’s biggest islands.

DANISH SUMMER BEACH HOUSE

18 July 2014

Mette-Wotkjaer-House-via-Femina-01

OMG, my romantic side has got the better of me today. Isn’t this Danish summer beach house just gorgeous!? I found it via Femina and it is the home of photographer and stylist Mette Wotkjær which she shares during the summer with her extended family.

Mette’s own home is much more modern and filled with designer pieces from &Tradition, Muuto and Hay to name but a few. One of the reasons I suspect why she went for quite a classic Nordic style including antiques, vintage pieces and the obligatory wood burner complete with cosy sheep skin.

For me Mette has got the balance of classic and modern just right with this interior. The 1960ies house is stripped back with sanded floors and white ceilings and walls with just enough vintage and modern pieces to make it comfortable and homely. They say it’s knowing when to stop adding to a room that makes a good interior designer and stylist and I think Mette has got it spot on.

Adding blues in different hues as the only additional colour brings the whole house together and highlights the vintage – I’m guessing 60ies – kitchen.

At the end of this fabulously hot week here in London I could do with a weekend at her summer beach house which is just 5 min walk and 180 steps to the sea. *dream*

Where are you cooling off this weekend?

MOOD BOARD | FEELING HOT HOT HOT

Today is billed as the hottest day of the year so far… in the UK!

If we trust the forecast it’ll be 30 degrees here in sunny London and as the lyrics go “I am feeling hot hot hot” – and very happy about these summery temperatures. Luckily, our house is nice and cool, fresh fruit and ice lollies are prepped and today’s entertainment is being provided in the shape of a paddling pool and water hose. Oh what fun you can have with such a simple thing and very effective to keep whinging kids at bay. *evil laugh*

You can see my ideas of cooling down in style above. All images sourced through beloved Pinterest. Enjoy and stay cool!

DESIGN INSPIRATION | BRANDING BY SAVVY STUDIO

15 July 2014

Håndværk, handvaerk, branding, design, graphic design, savvy studio, mexico, monterray, quality, luxury, craftsmanship, hand-make, hand-finish, finest raw materials, family owned workshops, clean aesthetics, understated, NYC, esteban saba, petra brichnacova

Today’s branding project was a complete surprise to me on two levels. Firstly it’s not – as first thought – a Scandinavian brand but was actually established in New York only last year by husband and wife team Esteban Saba and Petra Brichnacova. They say:

Håndværk is a small, artisan label specialising in supremely luxurious pieces with a thoughtfully curated collection of high quality everyday essentials made from the finest natural raw materials and innovative fabrics.

Our heritage is grounded in three generations of small-scale family production; a storied legacy of manufacturing textiles, garments, and luxury products. We hand-make or hand-finish each individual piece in collaboration with other family owned workshops specialized in their craft, who share our unwavering commitment for exceptional quality.

Wow, they had me at artisan but that’s not all. I was probably even more surprised to find out that the branding was done by Savvy, a design studio in Monterray Mexico, of all places. Wow, again as I think their translation of the brand values is perfectly reflected in the logo and understated packaging. The predominantly white aesthetics, clean lines and minimalist typography oozes luxury and quality. I should also mention that the word håndværk means craft in Danish and the special lower case a and ae characters add interest and subtle recognition to the logo type.

A beautiful branding job that got me thinking about the Mexican design studio that managed to create such a cool luxury brand. On further snooping around Savvy’s instagram account it seems that they’re a fan of Scandinavian aesthetics as shots of their office could easily be in Copenhagen, Stockholm or Berlin. I guess the beauty of the world wide web brings us ever closer together and how wonderful to think that a NYC luxury brand with Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics was conjured up by a Mexican design studio. Truly inspirational!

NOTE: Check out the branding for Nordic House by another superb Mexcian studio.
