INTERIORS CRUSH | AT HOME IN A FACTORY

I haven’t featured an interiors crush for ages and today’s is even more special as it’s the home of one of my Wild Boys & Girls customers German photographer Petra Reger who runs her studio Wertvoll Fotografie from a converted factory in Southern Germany.

I’m proud to say she’s been a Stylejuicer reader for a while and I caught up with her to find out more about this amazing project.

First up, I’m dying to know how you managed to get hold of such a beautiful property. It looks like it was a huge project. What was the original condition like?

I first came across the factory hall 23 years ago when I moved into a flat opposite. Coincidentally my future husband Eddie also lived in a shared flat across the road and the factory hall has always been my dream home.

After our return from living abroad for many years we bought an old Art Nouveau apartment which we adored and moving just wasn’t on our radar. But when we saw that the hall was empty we immediately made enquires but sadly found out that it had already been sold. Months later we met an old friend who told us that it was him who had purchased the factory hall but he was only interested in one of the outbuildings and we were lucky enough to be able to purchase the hall from him.

As for the original condition I enclose a photo to give you an idea (scroll to the bottom). We had to completely strip it down and start again, new floors, heating, electrics etc. The windows were very important to us and we made sure they were restored to it’s original condition including the arches which had been squared off over the years.

How have you divided the space in terms of living and working?

The dividing metal wall was designed by our architect and custom made by a local metalsmith. We love it as it defines the different zones in the large downstairs space between cooking / dining and living / working.

The factory is perfect for us as I can welcome clients discussing work in a warm environment that also represents my style and additionally can serve as a backdrop for photoshoots. It was also important to us to separate work and private life so upstairs you can find the bedrooms, bathroom, TV room and Eddie’s office.

How long did the renovation take and how involved were you in the physical restauration?

It took almost a year and we were only involved in the demolition part of it with great help from our kids and friends. The rest of the project was left to the architect and local craftsmen.

How would you describe your interior style? Has it evolved over the years?

Oh, gosh this is hard… ‘collector’s items in a monochrome colour scheme’? Since Eddie and I got married quite young we’ve always had old furniture in our home. We loved scouring flea markets and junk shops for vintage pieces before we even heard of the term shabby chic. Many of our pieces have been reincarnated and painted several times over the years, eg the desk used to be a white kitchen table before being used as a green crafts table for the children and now it’s back in fashionable black as a desk.

We also re-cycled the old floor boards to create the shelves, the table in the conservatory and the large work table near the entrance. In addition we have purchased some new furniture, mostly design classics as I feel as long as the colour is neutral it all fits together somehow. I’m keen to avoid trends and so pleased I didn’t buy the dyed oriental carpet which at the time I thought was achingly cool.

I’m particularly attracted to industrial furniture and lighting. Pieces that have marks and scratches, signs of having been lived in and with, eg the daybed in the conservatory was my 14 year old daughter’s cot bed and I hope she’ll put her children to bed in there some day.

My style has definitely developed over the years… at one point we used to have a red feature wall and bright colourful pieces of furniture dotted around. My inspiration mostly comes from books and magazines like Living Etc and Danish RUM, which I’ve been collecting for years. I’ve got to admit that I’ve only a recent discovered Pinterest.

Thanks so so much for your time Petra and sharing your story. It’s fascinating to read how your project has come together. Finally, where is your favourite spot in the house?

It has to be my little office corner where I am in the thick of it. And in the summer I imagine it’ll probably be the daybed in the conservatory as the windows and doors open wide letting in the summer breeze and sunshine.

NORWEGIAN CHRISTMAS CABIN DECOR

4 December 2014

norwegian, christmas, cabin, decor, home, weekend, mountains, skiing, snow, retreat, interior design, rustic modern, calm, relaxed, vintage finds, mix, bolina, interior boutique, bespoke kitchen, reclaimed, recycled, wooden planks, barn

December is going to be even more manic than usual for me as we’re preparing to move house at the end of the month. Only 10min down the road but I’ve got no idea how to get it done… yet. I’m sure some last minute inspiration, read childcare (any volunteers?), is going to turn up and it’ll all be fine. Famous last words, eh!?

Until then I’m burying my head firmly in the sand, or snow if this idyllic Norwegian Christmas cabin decor is anything to go by.

The calm and relaxed atmosphere is just what I need at the moment and I love how all the vintage finds mix in beautifully with new home decor from shops like Tine K Home and the owners online interior boutique Bolina.

The white floors and ceilings really lift the interior and draw the eye to the opposing black walls and the feature fire place. It’s a simple and rustic setting with a bespoke kitchen made from reclaimed planks from an old barn and personal memories on display giving it warmth and character.

A fabulous mountain retreat and perfect for sticking my head in the snow.

INTERIOR INSPIRATION | LAURENCE SIMONCINI

21 August 2014

Laurence-Simoncini-Ile-De-Re-by-Karel-Balas-01

Today’s interior inspiration is another ‘corker’ from the Ile De Ré, off the west coast of France. Funnily enough it’s been photographed by Karel Balas whose summer house is also located on the chic island and was featured here on Monday.

It’s the holiday home of Laurence Simoncini, co-founder of Parisian concept store Serendipity and her dramatic and consistent design shows what a creative talent she is. Built in the middle of coastal marshland this single story home with black wooden cladding blends effortlessly into the landscape and I adore the ancient gnarled and twisted tree surrounded by pebbles and the desert like garden design which is easily maintained.

Inside there’s a very quiet and serene atmosphere where the emphasis is on raw and natural materials, textures and fabrics. Polished concrete, lime washed walls, wooden flooring – everything is kept in a wonderful brown, grey and black palette with carefully selected art objects, modern lighting, drift wood seats, hand-thrown ceramics and ornate vintage candle sticks blending perfectly.

No quirky touches or bright colours just an amazingly luxurious interior that still feels inviting. Granted you have to imagine your everyday objects like remote controls, newspapers, post-it notes, socks and shoes flying around. I know I might be stating the obvious but sometimes we forget how highly styled these shots are to show off the interior concept for the glossy magazines.

My favourite pieces have to be the fireplace, the double bed sitting on railway sleepers and how wonderful is that woven nest-like seat Laurence poses on with her adorable children!?

SMALL SPACES | SWEDISH CABIN

4 July 2014

Swedish-cabin-via-Elle-Decoration-01

This cabin is just 70 sqm (750 sqft) and nestled in the woods somewhere in Sweden. It’s home to Katy and Hugo and their two children who like to live outside as much as possible. Large windows and doors let in plenty of light and views of the garden and woods connect inside and outside.

From what I can see and read they live a very environmentally conscious life and most of their furniture is inherited or found at flea markets – bar the odd piece from IKEA which is almost mandatory if you’re Swedish.

They also love cooking and their reading nook has lots of bargain cookbooks close at hand. With so much land around it’s not surprising they’ve got their own vegetable garden too and like to harvest just before dinner so no food miles here. I bet those veggies are full of flavour.

I like that Katy has also created a studio space in the loft which must have the most wonderful views through those large Velux windows. Talking of views I don’t think you can beat the one from the sunken bath across the lawn and into the woods. Katy says: “It’s incredibly nice to be there in the morning and brush your teeth while watching blackbirds bathing in the small puddles we created in rock crevices.”

Katy and Hugo’s lifestyle reminds me of my own upbringing and I’m feeling quite nostalgic about their rural set-up and wholesome attitude. I’m sure there are drawbacks and the long dark winter months would make me feel quite isolated but these sunny shots by Anna Kern are wonderfully enticing to go back to my roots and live the country life.

What do you think about their Swedish cabin? Would you feel isolated living in the woods?

COOL STUFF | ECLECTIC STORE FENTON AND FENTON

19 May 2014

fenton and fenton, australia, shop, eclectic, colour, home wares, artefacts, accessories, jewellery, vibrant, antique, recycled, reproduction, bespoke, service, interior design

Hello and happy Monday to you! We had amazingly hot weather and sunshine (!) here in the UK over the weekend and I started to manically pull out all our summer clothes and sandals. Only to discover that when I finally got everything together the boys were already jumping in and out of the paddling pool without any clothes on! Obvs! 😉

Somehow the warm temperatures and explosion in nature made me think that I should embrace colour a bit more on the blog so this week will be a colourful one for a change which I hope you’ll enjoy.

Today features the brilliantly eclectic and colourful Australian home wares company Fenton and Fenton which I found whilst browsing on Pinterest late one night. I love the styling of these shots and that it’s all curated and carefully selected by owner Lucy Fenton who manages to combine her love of travel with a passion for vibrant and unusual home furnishings and artefacts. She says:

The range at Fenton And Fenton reflects Lucy’s bold and adventurous spirit, her love of colour and expresses a style that dares to mix and match objects, origins and eras.

Fenton and Fenton offers a unique shopping experience on- and off-line with an eclectic collection of home wares and lifestyle products. Where else would you find antique, reproduction and recycled timber furniture pieces next to one-off curios, artwork, fashion and jewellery!?

I love that it’s all individually and ethically sourced from around the world and the team even offer a bespoke service on specific items and advice on your interior design needs. What a great find! And BTW I want that stag head, one of the rescue rings, the number 1 tote and some black beaded bracelets please.
