Brighton residence | Spectacular home by Golden

12 October 2020

Brighton residence is a spectacular home designed to be experienced by all the senses and enriching family life wether at rest or play.

Brighton residence is an extraordinarily spectacular home designed to be experienced by all the senses and enriching family life wether at rest or play. The interior design by Melbourne based studio Golden was meticulous in its approach to giving the client not only the desired wow factor but family comforts in equal measure.

Since the clients love to entertain various seating areas are dotted around the home some intimate with dark walls and rich coloured upholstery and others larger and open to enjoy the view of the pool which has to be one of the most dramatic features. Its large viewing screen looking into the pool is accessed from the bar on the lower ground and I’m sure will be equally entertaining for adults as well as kids.

I wanted to share this home as it demonstrates that you can create opposing interiors within the same setting and enhance the overall harmony. The snug is naturally cosy with dark panelling, an open fire, tactile, shaggy seating and a large patterned rug. It is defined by its function to create closeness with the ceiling painted in a dark shade. On the same ground floor level there’s a large open plan kitchen / living / dining area with plenty of natural light that bounces off the mostly white walls.

I love that there are so many textures at play in this home from the gold pillar to smooth glass and shiny marble, deep pile shaggy seating, tactile leather, rough board and polished concrete to wood in various shades and finishes. Your eye bounces around the room and I can only imagine what fabulous parties will be held here once we’ve overcome the current pandemic.

A balmain cottage with a concrete extension

13 July 2020

This Balmain cottage got an extensive renovation and a contemporary concrete extension thanks to craftsmanship and the vision of architects Benn and Penna.

Today’s house tour is of a Balmain cottage that got an extensive face lift and a mind blowing concrete extension thanks to the craftsmanship of stonemasons and builders Newmark Construction and the architects Benn and Penna.

This is one of those projects where trust and understanding between client, architect and builder have created a masterpiece that has won various awards. The existing cottage was built with sandstone walls back in 1870 and was in bad shape when the clients bought it. The brief was to sensitively restore the cottage and add an extension at the rear that works for modern living and enlarges the footprint considerably.

Benn and Penna designed the extension as a contemporary version of the cottage and linking it with a glass corridor that brings natural light into the central part of the house. It’s not your usual open-plan but instead presents many angles, light wells and nooks and crannies to discover, each considered in their appearance and flow through the residence.

I love how the house unfolds and reveals itself through the different stone textures and colours that lead you from the old cottage to the concrete extension. Starting with soft yellow-brown sandstone when you enter, following the new broken up slate flooring along the connecting corridor to white-washed recycled brick and sharp concrete in the extension and eventually via a wide staircase leading out into the garden.

Considering the rear view of the magnificent concrete extension it is no surprise this Balmain cottage was named Balmain Rock by the achitects.

Crittall style windows and doors in Sydney residence

6 July 2020

Crittall style windows and doors take center stage in this Victorian Annandale house renovation bringing a touch of industrial chic into home life.

Crittall style windows and doors have been on my wishlist for a long time so you can imagine how my heart skipped a beat when I saw this gorgeous home renovation in Sydney by Baldwin & Bagnall.

Apart from the Victorian facade the Annandale house was almost completely gutted as the floorpan didn’t serve the requirements of a modern, growing family who wanted a thoughtfully designed residence with a comfortable, clean and modern interior that didn’t wipe out the houses’ heritage.

Baldwin & Bagnall did a fantastic job blending traditional features with bespoke joinery and minimal use of colour throughout to achieve that neutral contemporary canvas the clients were after. Upstairs the master bedroom is more sumptuous with a fabric covered room divider that serves as a headboard and some beautiful long drapes framing the original french doors leading out to a typical Victorian balcony.

I love how the ground floor has the feeling of a gallery with ample natural light thanks to newly installed skylights and white walls which set off those stunning Crittall style windows and doors beautifully. A touch of industrial chic brought into home life which can only be a good thing in my world.

My head is spinning with (even more!) ideas for our own ground floor renovation which I can’t wait to tell you about very soon.

In the meantime I’ve drawn inspiration from the majority of the renovations I feature on here but none more so than this Sydney home.

Warm and sophisticated family apartment in Stockholm

22 June 2020

This warm and sophisticated 1920s apartment was remodeled by interior and furniture designer Louise Liljecrantz and her sense of understated luxury.

This warm and sophisticated remodel of a 1920s apartment may not seem like a family residence at first glance but interior and furniture designer Louise Liljecrantz took great care to alter the spacial flow to accommodate everybody’s needs.

The open-plan kitchen is right at the heart of the apartment partly obscured by a sculptural semi circular wooden screen that sets the tone as soon as you enter. The dark wooden herringbone flooring gives the residence immediately a warm feel and is reflected throughout the home in bespoke joinery. Paired with the sludgy grey tone of the walls and other exquisite materials like limestone worktop and a pair of my favourite Petra chairs in sheepskin you are presented with a sophistication that pays tribute to the buildings central Stockholm location.

This is of course photographed in it’s prime state – just finished but not quite moved in yet. A sweet spot I’d like to be able to maintain in my own home but living with others always ruins the look. Still, a beautiful project by Liljencrantz Design.

If you’d like to see more Stockholm interiors head over to this post I wrote about ALMA, a wonderfully understated stylish workspace. Or have a look at USINE, an achingly trendy restaurant, bar, cafe, take away place with additional reception and conference spaces giving your business increased kudos.

CONTEMPORARY, LIGHT FILLED RESIDENCE BY CERA STRIBLEY

15 June 2020

melbourne contemporary light filled residence by cera stribley

It’s my birthday today and I’m treating myself and you lovely readers to some extra cool eye candy from down under. This contemporary light filled residence has been cleverly designed with an angled skylight in the entryway extending to the mezzanine landing on the first floor. Thus bringing brightness into the house even on the dullest of rainy days.

I love how architects Cera Stribley have managed to create a sort of sundial in the bathroom through the installation of a narrow strip of skylight. I’m sure you’d be able to judge if you’re late for work in the morning just by where the shaft of light falls.

You know I’m still a fan of the overall monochrome look which in my opinion brings sharpness, style and calm into the home. The dark kitchen island with grey marble (quartz?) worktop is a particular favourite and one that I’ve had on my own kitchen idea board for a long time. I also totally dig the black and white speckled terrazzo flooring which I think works perfectly in warmer climes, like this Melbourne residence. Though judging by the installation of a wood burner maybe it does get chilly in Oz occasionally!?

Overall, this is an exceptional light filled 3-bedroom urban residence and I’m glad that inspirational new builds like these get realised and not choked with red tape and regulations. Hats off to Cera Stribley and it’s clients.
