CARRIE LANTRN BY NORM ARCHITECTS FOR MENU

I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Danish design so seeing some of my favs collaborate made my heart skip a beat. Norm Architects have designed this beautiful LED lantern, aptly named Carrie for Menu and I love its form just as much as the function (see what I did there – function+form).

Perfect for outdoor adventures at dusk particularly when there’s a bit of a breeze and sooooo much nicer than a torch. But no need to labour the versatility of this simple lamp – the photographs speak for themselves.

NINA AND CO | THE BREAKFAST COLLECTION

11 February 2016

nina woodcroft, nina and co, ethical, batch produced, the breakfast collection, multicultural heritage, responsibly sourced materials, australian, danish, indian, multicultural heritage, simple, geometry, clean, stripped-back, honest, social enterprises, luminary bakery, trend, style

Let me introduce you to talented London designer Nina Woodcroft whose strong sense of ethics led her to start her own design studio Nina and Co in 2014. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some bowls from the first batch of her Breakfast Collection which is made in collaboration with design consultancy The Ceramicists.

The collection is incredibly tactile with an unglazed ‘bottom’ that shows off the dark clay and perfectly imperfect grey / blue glazing. I’ve had my cereal as well as some milky coffee from it as it sits so beautifully in the hand and I love the slanted edges and thin rim. The entire collection is made from responsibly sourced materials and batch-produced to maximise efficiency and reduce waste.

Nina attributes her inspiration in part to her multicultural heritage – she was born and bred in Camden to an Australian mother and Indian / Danish father. Her clean approach to design, stripped-back geometry and simple, honest forms are reminiscent of Danish design and the basic requirements of these everyday objects have been carefully considered, challenged and rendered to bring artistry and celebration to the breakfast table.

Her studio is also currently working on two social enterprise projects; a cafe for the homelessness charity Centrepoint in Soho and a bakery and cafe for Luminary Bakery, which offers opportunities for vulnerable women in East London to build a future for themselves and their families through baking, both of which are due to complete early this year.

MOODBOARD | PLANTS IN THE HOME

1 February 2016

plants in the home, moodboard, trend, style, green, movement, urban jungle bloggers, planters, sky garden, function and form, architecture, sculptural plants

Let’s talk about plants in the home. They are everywhere. It’s not even a trend anymore, it’s a movement, a tidal wave of green invading our homes. My favourite brands are designing pots and planters, free standing, wall hanging, in any size, shape and colour and I’m simply overwhelmed.

I mentioned in my previous post that I’m toying with the idea to join this urban jungle movement (Judith & Igor I’m almost there) and start by actually buying a plant BUT I’m procrastinating, have been for years and keep coming up with reasons why I shouldn’t get involved. Two wild boys who will poke and prod and ‘hurt’ it (best case scenario), not enough room (we live minimal), responsibility to keep another ‘thing’ alive and look after (struggling with the aforementioned brood)… but mainly I think it’s the look.

If you hadn’t guessed I’m very particular and the shade of green and the shape of the leaves, well, they’d have to be perfect which makes me think that I’m missing the point of keeping plants in the first place. I could always buy a perfect fake one but that’s just… yuk. Rip-off products are just wrong and never look / taste / feel / smell as good as the real deal, the original.

To take a closer look and to (finally) kindle my love for plants in the home I went to visit Sky Garden last weekend with my Function+Form sidekick Tiff (her word not mine) and our respective families. The space is simply a-ma-zing and whilst Tiff couldn’t get enough of photographing the beautiful gardens and greenery I found myself drawn to the architecture, the structure and lines, the nuts and bolts, the different materials and the general awe inspiring space and feat of engineering. Maybe I’m just not a plant person, just like I’m not a horse person or an intuitive cook, I need a recipe to follow.

However, on my visit I did figure out that the plant I wouldn’t mind – a sort of fig tree type – is according to Tiff quite tricky to keep alive so might not be the best one to start with.

So, whilst I’m waiting to fall in love with plants in the home I’ve put a mood board together with the best sculptural and easy on the eye plants that I could find. And the best thing is this mood board doesn’t need any watering. Hang on… maybe I should go for a plant photowall instead!?

AIAYU AT HOME | INTERVIEW VIA CEREAL

29 January 2016

Just before Christmas I read a wonderful interview on Cereal’s website with Marie Worsaae, one of the partners at Danish lifestyle brand Aiayu. She talked about her life, work and home and how the sustainable concept of the brand has filtered through into her life and decorating style.

She says: “I like mixing Danish design with more rustic pieces — I’m not an either/or person. I think Aiayu is the same.”

I discovered the brand a few years ago and blogged about them here so it was nice to catch a glimpse of Marie’s home in Copenhagen. I totally adore her style which is a wonderful mix between old and new with a restraint earthy colour palette of pale pinks, rusty reds and browns, mossy greens and soft greys.

I couldn’t agree more with the relaxed and comfortable tone she set for her home and her quest to inject some slow living and mindfulness into everyday tasks like brewing coffee and even doing the laundry.

“My house allows a life to be lived in it. I want it always to be comfortable and to make people feel comfortable, never stiff. Everything in it brings warmth into my everyday life.”

If you want to delve deeper into Marie’s world read the whole interview by Lucy Brook on Cereal.

FERM LIVING SS2016

25 January 2016

ferm living, spring summer 2016, ss2016, collection, style, trend, graphic wallpaper, clean lines, aesthetics, graphic edge, scandinavian tradition, craftmanship, honest materials, hot air balloon lamp, herman chair, punctual shelving system, confetti wallpaper, frame pinboard, collect vases, hexagon pots, plant boxes, plant stands, urban jungle

It’s been 10 years since ferm living launched it’s first range of graphic wallpapers and a steady rise for the Danish brand that draws on Scandinavian design traditions and simple aesthetics – but with a distinctive graphic edge.

For their 10th anniversary they’re launching a sparkling Confetti wallpaper as well as the Herman chair and Punctual shelving system.

Clean lines and strong aesthetics in combination with honest materials and craftsmanship has long been their unique selling point and I’m pretty much in love with most of it.

Looking at my own needs for the home office their new Frame pinboard and magazine rack would fit in perfectly and for all you plant lovers there are fabulous new Collect vases, Hexagon pots as well as plant stands and boxes. Wall mounted and free standing – perfect to style your urban jungle.

The modular Punctual shelving system also works really well for the kids room and I’m totally smitten by the Hot Air balloon lamps.

Top marks for founder and fellow graphic designer Tine who thankfully (!) couldn’t find the sort of graphic wallpaper she wanted for her home 10 years ago and which led her to launch ferm living. Graphic designers, eh!? We’re a particular bunch…
