INTERIORS CRUSH | STYLING BY JOSEFIN HAAG

27 November 2015

Josefin Haag is fast becoming one of my favourite stylists. Her blog 20kvadrat is a great source of inspiration and I recently found this gem of an apartment on there which she styled for Residence Magazine and was shot by the talented Kristofer Johnsson.

The bright and clean vibe is right up my street and I love the neutral colour scheme with mixed up furniture from designer and IKEA to flea market finds. It gives the place an interesting edge and as well as immediate homely feel.

As small city apartments go this is a real interiors crush for me.

PEOPLE TO WATCH | THE SMALL HOME

25 November 2015

the small home, online, lifestyle, decor, homewares, clothing, craft, independent designer makers, curated, ethos, less offers more, style, substance, pared back aesthetic, Japanese Wabi Sabi, beauty in imperfection, style, styling, trend, London, people to watch

One of the things I love about blogging is that it gives me the chance to promote and support start-ups and independents, be it independent designer / makers with our Function+Form events or – as in this case – The Small Home an online lifestyle website selling a collection of bespoke craft and clothing products lovingly picked and thoughtfully curated.

The founders of The Small Home Stephanie Taylor (creative) and Ayshea McCormack (buyer) also happen to be local mums I’ve met through friends and they don’t just have impeccable taste but over 30 years experience in fashion retail between them and may I add the most stunning homes.

I inspected their selection of artisan products at a recent press launch and a trunk show and was impressed with their curation. The products are both useful and beautiful and an antidote to the modern day mindset of disposability.

Ayshea comments; “Our ethos is that less offers much more. The concept is style and substance. The aesthetic, pared back.”
Stephanie adds; “We take inspiration from the Japanese Wabi Sabi – seeing the beauty in imperfections.”

I love the support Ayesha and Steph are giving the artists, some of whom have just left art school and trying to make a career in their chosen craft. Every piece has an interesting human story behind it which makes it all the more engaging as a result.

The wooden paddle boards by Hampson Woods are a great example of their ethos. Sourced from FSC timber Hampson Woods design and make all products in their workshop in Hackney, East London. With a real passion for timber they carefully craft each product to the highest standard – pleasing to the hand, and to the eye – retaining a simple and timeless elegance.

With Christmas approaching fast it’s worth paying The Small Home a visit before they’re sold out.

BATHROOM STYLING | LOTTA AGATON

23 November 2015

kristofer johnsson, residence magazine, bathroom, styling, style, trend, lotta agaton’s diary, blog, anticipated, creative director, behind the scenes, editorial team, easygoing, unexpected tips, interior design, interiors, home, decor

I’m swooning over this wonderful bathroom styling by Lotta Agaton for Residence Magazine, shot by Kristofer Johnsson.

Lotta also has a new blog Lotta Agaton’s Diary where she shares more of her life, personal finds and behind the scenes shots and gossip form the editorial team at Residence where she’s creative director. She says the blog will be more easygoing with unexpected tips and news form the world of interior design.

Her blog is quite rightly hyped as ‘this year’s most anticipated blog’ and knowing Lotta she will no doubt deliver.

FUNCTION AND FORM | THE FIRST GATHERING

18 November 2015

function and form, event, gathering, like minded, potter jono smart, northern irish linen company, enrich and endure, sarah quinn, guest speakers, relaxed, informal, brunch, dining, company, connections, face time, real conversation, heals, forge and co cafe, 31 chapel lane, hole and corner magazine, concrete jungles, style, styling, table setting, trend, hibernation

Our very first Function and Form event took place on a dark and damp Saturday in November. Exactly the sort of weather that makes you peek out of the window only to decide that it’s best to stay in bed and off the grid. Exactly the sort of weather we didn’t want for our first event!

BUT clearly the lure of a lovely brunch combined with meeting a great group of like-minded people was just too tempting to pull the duvet back over your head and follow a hashtag. After all there’s no substitute for old school face time and human interaction.

It seems that our guests, partners and sponsors agreed and everybody turned up in plenty of time to get settled with a hot drink and sink back into the comfy sofas at the Forge & Co Cafe at Heal’s before our first guest speaker potter Jono Smart kicked off procedures and made everybody immediately feel at ease with his easy going chat and anecdotes about his journey into designing and making.

Starting out as a planner for an advertising agency before losing his heart (and almost his health) to garden design and finally arriving at his beautiful barn in rural Berkshire where his kiln is rarely empty and he keeps entertained with all manner of podcasts.

We were all taken by the simple shapes of his work in mostly natural colours. Rather unusually he likes to leave the outside matt and untreated, showing off the clay itself and making it warm to the touch which means that each piece will change slowly over time, showing the marks of day to day life.

An inspiring journey and one that makes you realise it’s never too late to start afresh.

A sentiment our second guest speaker Sarah Quinn from Enrich and Endure could empathise with. She started a homewares company with her brother Lorcan back in 2013 with a view to reviving the local Northern Irish linen industry combining modern designs with traditional craftsmanship.

However, after their first collection they soon found a disconnection between their high end product and customers and eventually decided to start afresh with a product they can truly relate to: Aprons! A product that was under their nose all along through their passion for food and coffee in particular.

Linen is one of the toughest fibres on the planet and makes absolute sense as a fabric for aprons which Enrich and Endure have rebranded as the Makers Uniform. No matter how many times you rub your hands on it or wash it, it just gets better with age.

Both Sarah and Jono engaged and enthralled our guests with their passion and commitment to their craft and product and provided plenty of material for discussion during brunch afterwards.

It was such a pleasure to see everybody having a good time, making new connections and talking about their passions and experiences, whilst taking note of our table styling and busy spreading the word via social media with the hashtag #WeAreFunctionAndForm.

A special thank you has to go to our wonderful sponsors, online community at{mine} who believed in and supported our idea from the word go. Not to forget the generosity of our partners who had faith in us and happily provided products for our styling, namely linen napkins from 31 Chapel Lane, concrete planters and greenery from Concrete Jungles and Hole&Corner Magazine who share our passion for independent design and craftsmanship.

Tiff and I couldn’t be happier to see this budding community of like minds and can’t wait to bring you the next one in Spring 2016.

If this sounds like your cup of tea drop us a line via the contact form on the website. We’d love to hear from you.

MOOD BOARD | AUTUMN VIBES #03

16 November 2015

mood board, autumn, vibes, function and form, event, wild boys and girls, kids decor, wood, fire, warmth, wind, leaves, brown, earthy tones

I haven’t been as present on here as I would have liked to be these past couple of months but with the launch of Wild Boys & Girls shortly followed by Function+Form finding time for passion projects like Stylejuicer has been at a premium.

Hopefully everything should calm down from now on and I’ll be able to get back into blogging a bit more. One of the things that I’ve been missing is creating a mood board so this morning I’ve made myself a hot brew and indulged in finding some autumnal images that match my current mood which is calm, inspired and fulfilled after Saturday’s inaugural Function+Form event.

More of which later this week when we’ve edited our shots … let’s just say it was everything and more that Tiff and I had expected! For some glimpses follow the #WeAreFunctionAndForm hashtag on Instagram.
