REFURBISHMENT OF A MEXICAN TOWNHOUSE BY BELGIAN ARCHITECTS

26 June 2017

I’m often torn between the benefits and draw backs of globalization but this refurbishment of a Mexican townhouse by Belgian architect Nicolas Schuybroek and Belgian interior designer Marc Merckx has to be a prime example of why globalization is a good thing.

Both architect and designer are former associates of Vincent van Duysen and all share a similar sense of detail, craftsmanship, simplicity and love for unassuming, tactile and raw materials. I first came across this project by following Marc Merckx on Instagram where he showed details of the polished concrete floor, the stunning arabescatto marble and locally sourced parotta wood alongside the wafer thin metal staircase.

I love how the urban jungle courtyard garden with large foliage plants, ferns and palm trees contrasts with the timeless minimalism of the interior and exterior, a previously 1970ies brutalist four storey building. Schuybroek and Merckx have achieved an elegant timeless house by keeping to their restraint material selection.

You can see Vincent van Duysen’s refurbishment of Antwerp’s Graanmarkt here.

DANISH COTTAGE WITH HIGH CEILINGS

22 June 2017

danish cottage, high ceilings, wooden cottage, scandinavian living, trend, style, inspiration, sloping ceiling, dinesen floorboards, light, space

You don’t really associate wooden cottages with high ceilings but this Danish home built in 2008 has been cleverly designed so that the main living / kitchen / dining area has 7m high sloping ceilings which not only harness lots of light but add a sense of generosity and space. Paint it all white and add some Dinesen floorboards and you’ve got the perfect backdrop for Scandinavian living.

You can see more of this stunning Danish cottage over here.

CRITTALL STYLE DOORS AND WINDOWS IN SYDNEY HOME

19 June 2017

outdoor living, pinterest, crittall, style, windows, doors, sydney home, white backdrop, sculptural plants, rich textures, trend, style, summer, sunshine

The weather has been so sunny here in the UK lately and I’m more than ever drawn to beautiful outdoor spaces you can live in, have a meal, BBQ, play or simply enjoy the sunshine.

This home in Sydney is a gorgeous example and I’m in love with the Crittall style doors and windows and the customised plywood kitchen all set against a white backdrop with large sculptural plants and rich textures. That window seat in the bedroom is pretty special too to take some time out, reading or simply observing the outside and reflecting – something that is in short supply around here.

If you want to see more OUTDOOR LIVING spaces head to my Pinterest board here.

PLACES TO GO | NAEVAER RESTAURANT BY NORM ARCHITECTS

16 June 2017

Norm Architects, Naevaer restaurant, Copenhagen, moody colour palette, intimate, dark, raw, industrial, tactile materials, large foliage, decorative plants, casual, style, trend, hip

Norm Architects have managed to design another hip interior for the intimate new Naevaer restaurant in Copenhagen.

With a moody colour palette of dark greys, burgundy and black the industrial space has been given intimacy and tactile natural materials like stone, wood, metal and decorative plants with large foliage add warmth to the raw concrete walls.

It’s a casual but upmarket restaurant where you can enjoy fine wines from around the world and French cuisine should you be one of the lucky few who manages to get a seat in this hip new place.

TRANSFORMATION OF FARMHOUSE BURKELDIJK AND FORTRESS HAZEGRAS

14 June 2017

architecture, eye candy, flanders, begium, style, trend, contemporary, farmhouse, fort, Govaert and Vanhoutte, history, WWI bunker, gun ports, restore, renovate, extend, modern

Some architectural perfection for you today with the transformation of Farmhouse Burkeldijk and fortress Hazegras into a residence by Belgian architects Govaert & Vanhoutte.

Carefully renovated and sensitively extended the introduction image shows the clean cut between the old listed fort and the new contemporary residence reflecting the local architecture of long farmhouses. I’m fascinated by the original vertical gun ports next to the entrance and the remnants of four WWI bunkers that surround the site.

These historical elements give the building an additional dimension and I love how the architects have managed to transform the fort and the farmhouse into a contemporary residence giving it an open floorplan and large floor to ceiling windows on the reverse of the fort. I can imagine living in this place invites reflection on the past and comparison with the present as well as giving you a healthy connection with the beautiful landscape of Flanders.

See more here.
