MOOD BOARD | AW14 TREND

17 October 2014

fashion, aw14, oversize, long sleeves, sweater, coat, fabric, cozy, layers, hip, trend, zara, cos, andotherstories, wool, cashmere, alpaca, natural, muted colours, design, high street, skinny straight

What’s nicer than to wrap up in an oversize sweater or coat when you’re chilly!? It’s like a warm blanket that comforts and protects you and I just love this AW14 trend which inspired me to put a little mood board together all courtesy of my Pinterest feed.

I recently read somewhere that you’re only as cool as your sleeves are long this season – or words to the effect – and I for one am very happy to embrace this trend. Being taller and longer limbed than the average female I’m delighted to see there are lots of tall (as well as petite) sections now on the high street and some of my favourite brands like Zara, COS and &otherstories have always cut their clothes with extra long sleeves. Or if you want designer pop over to Joseph and ACNE – did you spot their divine sweater top left!?

I’m not a big fan of the cold so it’s fair to say that autumn and winter aren’t my favourite seasons but I do enjoy putting on lots of cosy layers and playing with different textures and colours. Naturally soft yarns like wool, cashmere and alpaca are my wardobe staple for the coming months and I mostly stick to muted colours from off whites to greys, navy and black with some dark forest greens and plum shades. Mix that with some skinny straight trousers and hip sneakers and you’re all set for the coming months.

Cold? Who’s cold now?

PLACES TO GO | SANTA CATALINA BY SALVA LOPEZ

15 October 2014

santa catalina, places to go, travel, palma, mallorca, neighbourhood, salva lopez, photography, photo series, monocle magazine, spain, mediterranean, tapas, bars, restaurants, local, vibe, laid back, traditional, architecture, trend

OMG, I was so excited when I came across this gorgeous photo series of Santa Catalina – a neighbourhood in Palma de Mallorca – by Salva Lopéz. [Thank you, thank you lovely Victoria from SFGirlByBay.]

As you might know I’ve got a bit of a crush on Palma and with this dark damp autumn weather I find myself daydreaming about warmer climes and sunshine. The photo series was commissioned by Monocle magazine and you’ll have to buy the issue or subscribe online to find out where all these gorgeous shops, bars and restaurants are to be found.

We’ve visited Palma and Santa Catalina for the first time back in 2010 and have since been back a few times enjoying the laid back Mediterranean vibe, fabulous Spanish tapas bars and restaurants as well as all the hip and quirky little shops. The mix of traditional architecture and modern renovations still gives me a buzz and I love exploring all the little alley ways and back roads. It is this essence and flavour that Salva captured so beautifully in his series.

To me Santa Catalina is an organically evolving neighbourhood that serves the needs of locals and students as well as expats by offering the diversity that I crave.

For more tips on where to go and what to do in Santa Catalina check out my previous post here.

PLACES TO GO | FRANCO MANCA LONDON

13 October 2014

Franco-Manca-by-Stylejuicer-01

I’ve never been to Naples – arguably the birthplace of what we now refer to as pizza – but on one of my recent ventures into town I discovered Franco Manca. A pizzeria as close to the real thing as you can get without hopping on a plane to southern Italy.

It’s a small independent chain of pizza restaurants started in 2008 and passion for their product is at the heart of it. From branding to interior design – it’s all about simplicity, no fuss and good honest, quality ingredients.

The secret is in the slow-rising sourdough base (a minimum of 20hrs) which is baked in a wood burning ‘tufae’ brick oven made on site by specialised artisans from Naples producing a heat of about 500C (930F) – the oven (!) not the artisans. This blast-cooking method locks in the flour’s natural aroma and moisture producing a soft, easily digestible crust.

I had a simple Margarita which I watched the chefs prepare and have to say I was amazed at the difference to any other pizza I’ve tasted in the past. It was perfect! The texture, the subtle smoky flavour of some burnt dough ‘blisters’ and the combination of tomato, mozzarella and basil. Heaven is a good pizza – why has nobody made a poster or t-shirt with that slogan yet!?

Their simple and honest concept also translates into their branding which is monochrome handwritten typography and a childlike logo squiggle of what could be interpreted as a pizza, or pizza throwing or a planetary system. Like all good concepts there is total cohesion between the product, branding and interior design which is simple and clean with a few rustic elements giving the wood burning oven pride of place at the centre of the space.

I loved the ‘ouch’ sign on my way to the restrooms, a simple detail that made me feel warm and fuzzy – discarding my natural cynicism for a minute and making me believe that somebody cares for my well-being, or at least wants to avoid a law suit.

A fabulous experience which was made even better when the bill arrived. In case you want proof I’ve included a shot of it below. Just leaves me to mention that sadly you can’t book but don’t worry they turn the tables around pretty swiftly so I hear there’s never a very long wait. Only problem is I can’t go back to our local now I’ve tasted the real deal. #modernproblems

MOOD BOARD | WEEKEND VIBES #04

11 October 2014

bed, white, monochrome, bed linen, fashion, style, isabel marant, pre-fall, aprilandmay blogspot, blog, music, typography, type, interior design, nordic design, stan smith, anna pirkola, trend, black and white, weekend, vibes, adidas, mood board, oversized sweaters, belted jacket, cargo pants, AW 14

With the weather turning more autumnal there’s a great excuse to stay in bed, listen to some cool tunes and chill out in style this weekend.
Isabel Marant is currently one of my favourite designers and I love the oversized sweaters, belted jacket and cargo pants she has designed for AW 14. Casual but chic, gorgeous fabrics beautifully made. Pity I can only afford the Stan Smith trainers the model is wearing.

Wishing you all some boho weekend vibes.

INTERIORS CRUSH | ECLECTIC APARTMENT IN BERLIN

9 October 2014

electic, apartment, berlin, mitte, annabell kutucu, interior design, styling, steve herud, photography, creative, diversity, material mix, dark colours, raw, polished, wood, leather, textures, chill out, masculine, vintage, gym, equipment, rock star, trend

You might remember my mood board last Saturday where I confessed my love of vintage gym equipment and Annabell Kutucu’s styling!? So I thought I’d share the whole project with you today which is a fabulous eclectic apartment in the trendy Berlin Mitte district.

A total bachelor pad and very masculine with mostly dark grey walls and ceilings and beautiful oak flooring. The apartment and styling pays homage to Berlin and it’s creative diversity with quirky details on display everywhere and the different textures from raw to polished wood, black leather and shiny steel add to the sumptuous effect.

There’s a great selection of large wall art, some sleek music and recording equipment and that wonderfully styled hall with a gym bench and vintage pieces – oh, how I love that idea. There’s even some white hand writing on the ceiling presumably for those totally chilled out moments when you’re lying on the floor in front of the fire listening to some great tunes late at night – recreational drugs optional.

A total interiors crush perfect for rock star wannabe’s and creative types, beautifully captured by Steve Herud – check out his portfolio for more inspirational interiors.
