COLOURFUL ACCENTS IN SWEDISH HOME

20 May 2014

Colourful-Home-by-Stadshem-via-Stylejuicer-01

Phew… after yesterday’s colour explosion I feel the need to calm things down here on the blog. Not too much though as today I’d like to show you a mainly white Swedish home that has been perked up with lots and lots of colourful accents as well as strong graphic prints and patterns.

I found this via estate agents Stadshem and I like that it’s a real home. Well, of course it’s styled for the shoot to show it off in the best possible manner but it’s nice to see pots and pans, burnt candle wicks and a messy cushions lying around.

In many way this is a classic Swedish period apartment with high ceilings and the almost obligatory, white floor boards. It’s stripped bare but the owners obviously have a love for colour and seem to have gone for a more-is-more approach adding colour and pattern with almost every accessory.

I really like this concept as it gives enormous flexibility to chop and change and mix it up according to the seasons and / or your mood. If you don’t fancy a colour anymore, just remove that throw / cushion / pot / chair and start again.

My own home is very neutral and mainly white which relaxes me as I work with photos and colour on a daily basis. However, I sometimes toy with the idea of adding some bold accents until I see the children’s toys strewn around and I quickly change my mind.

It’s nice to see in these photos that there’s no need to be scared of colour or even graphic prints and patterns and you can just add colourful bits and pieces little by little. Start small with a colourful jug or cushion that you can move around and see how it blends in with your surroundings and slowly work your way up to painting a chair. Advice that’s easier given than implemented I know!

If you need some more encouragement and inspiration on how to add colour to your home have a look at Mr Bright Bazaar, Will Taylor’s new book ‘Embracing Colour For Make-You-Smile Style’.

You can read a fabulously detailed review with lots of examples on my blogging buddy Geraldine’s blog Little Big Bell. Enjoy and I dare you to buy something colourful this week.

COOL STUFF | ECLECTIC STORE FENTON AND FENTON

19 May 2014

fenton and fenton, australia, shop, eclectic, colour, home wares, artefacts, accessories, jewellery, vibrant, antique, recycled, reproduction, bespoke, service, interior design

Hello and happy Monday to you! We had amazingly hot weather and sunshine (!) here in the UK over the weekend and I started to manically pull out all our summer clothes and sandals. Only to discover that when I finally got everything together the boys were already jumping in and out of the paddling pool without any clothes on! Obvs! 😉

Somehow the warm temperatures and explosion in nature made me think that I should embrace colour a bit more on the blog so this week will be a colourful one for a change which I hope you’ll enjoy.

Today features the brilliantly eclectic and colourful Australian home wares company Fenton and Fenton which I found whilst browsing on Pinterest late one night. I love the styling of these shots and that it’s all curated and carefully selected by owner Lucy Fenton who manages to combine her love of travel with a passion for vibrant and unusual home furnishings and artefacts. She says:

The range at Fenton And Fenton reflects Lucy’s bold and adventurous spirit, her love of colour and expresses a style that dares to mix and match objects, origins and eras.

Fenton and Fenton offers a unique shopping experience on- and off-line with an eclectic collection of home wares and lifestyle products. Where else would you find antique, reproduction and recycled timber furniture pieces next to one-off curios, artwork, fashion and jewellery!?

I love that it’s all individually and ethically sourced from around the world and the team even offer a bespoke service on specific items and advice on your interior design needs. What a great find! And BTW I want that stag head, one of the rescue rings, the number 1 tote and some black beaded bracelets please.

INTERIORS CRUSH | MELBOURNE HOME OF STYLIST SIMONE HAAG

14 May 2014

Simone-Haag-Melbourne-by-Armelle-Habib-via-Stylejuicer-01

This should actually be a double crush as firstly, it’s in Australia – currently trending with me – and secondly, the interior is Scandinavian inspired which is always a winner on Stylejuicer.

The owners are stylist Simone Haag, her husband Rhys and a rather large dog called Tank. Incredibly, they managed to renovate this previously rather dark 1970s style timber home on the outskirts of Melbourne in just 3 months and now call it affectionately ‘The Log Cabin’.

Simone works for interior designers Hecker Guthrie who also gave guidance during the refurbishment. The house was totally repainted an off-white inside and a new Austrian larch floor was laid out in the main living and dining area. Kitchen and bathroom were gutted and I imagine the house must have smelt divine with all that fresh paint and wood… gorgeous.

The interior design reminds me in parts of a Swedish summer cabin and I adore the furnishing and decor which is coherent throughout and has a relaxed, clean and modern feel. The brick wall in the living area with a low and wide fire place give away the 70s origin of the house adding to it’s charm.

One of my favourite places has to be the serene uncluttered study with large filing cabinets and sexy wooden stationery items. I could happily sit there blogging and day dreaming.

If I don’t show up on this blog anymore you know where I am. On second thoughts Simone and Rhys might have something to say about that as I believe they might be expecting a new arrival that’s a lot smaller than me.

COOL STUFF | ETSY FINDS MIEP UND MEISE

13 May 2014

Etsy Finds, Miep und Meise, vintage, toys, quirky, cute, children's, clothing, kids corner, Berlin, Amsterdam, shop, Fashion, design

I have to confess that I don’t browse Etsy very often. With so much noise out there and cool and inspiring products popping into my inbox, Pinterest and Twitter stream every day, it’s just not on my radar. But… I vow this is all going to change!

I discovered Berlin based Miep und Meise via Deborah Beau’s blog Kickan & Conkers and loved the vintage toys and hand-made children’s clothes that she sells on Etsy so much that I have to share them with you today.

Miep & Meise is run by 27-year old Svenja who always had a passion for art and crafts but didn’t dare to pursue this proverbial hard and penniless route. I know from my own experience that true passions can’t be kept at bay for long and sure enough after an apprenticeship as a medical assistant she started to dip her toes into the art scene, visiting an art school and working for a children’s fashion brand.

Interestingly, she got another boost of motivation when discovering that she was a descendant of famous German surrealist Max Ernst before finally enrolling on a course for Fashion Design last year. Her dreams are to have a (physical) shop in Amsterdam – one of her favourite cities – as well as continuing to grow her children’s clothing collection. She says:

The best thing about sewing is that you start out not knowing exactly what the result will be but the second you hold the finished product in your hands you fall in love with it and your heart beats faster when you realise it is made by you.
Have you ever noticed how soon-to-be mummys freak out when seeing cute baby clothing? This is how I feel when I finish a cute spring jacket.
I also love toys of bygone times. I think most were made with much more love and care and the way I source my products is not searching for them.

What a quirky statement and no surprise that she’s a descendant of one of Germany’s best known surrealists. All I can say that the apple appears not to have fallen far from the pear tree and I can’t wait for Svenja to open her shop in Amsterdam!
