SMALL SPACES | CRISP STREET APARTMENTS

24 March 2014

Mim-Design-Crisp-Street-Apartments-via-Stylejuicer-07

Hello everyone! After a week of extended deadlines and a few too many night shifts, I’m back with a spring in my step and have a week with lots of juicy blog posts planned for you. All subtly inspired by Spring – though as I write this the hail is crashing down like there’s no tomorrow.

Today I want to share this beautiful interior project by Melbourne based interior studio Mim Design with you. It mainly caught my eye as I adore the abstract painting in the living room which works so well in this predominantly monochrome space with pretty pastel accents.

Crisp Street Apartments are dreamily located near the ocean on the outskirts of Melbourne, a block away from the beach so it’s no surprise that the interior should incorporate some coastal vibes.

The apartments are not ‘huge’ therefore in need of some neat space saving ideas, mainly through a clean and uncluttered layout and some functional yet modern furniture. Open-plan living also requires easy to maintain lines and surfaces and I love the different textures of the materials used, from polished grey stone to white-washed (or is it waxed?) oak flooring. The inset door handles on the kitchen cabinets are a neat touch and add to the streamlined look.

I was particularly pleased to spot that Mim Design also incorporated some favourite Scandinavian furniture, see the Raft table and stool by &tradition and the ML90 sofa from Great Dane Furniture. Nice to see how well-designed furniture works in all hemispheres.

CONTEMPORARY LOFT IN BARCELONA

17 March 2014

Barcelona-loft-via-Stylejuicer01

This is classic contemporary loft living without the sleek finish that most interiors now feature. The big lead factory windows and the simple and neutral colour scheme combined with flea market furniture are totally old skool but strangely appealing.

I like that it’a all still a bit rough around the edges and the ceiling beams have just been given a white coat of paint without being meticulously sanded down first. There’s a charm that comes with an unfinished look proving that interiors don’t always have to be polished and over-styled.

The apartment has got a laid back feel about it and I love the bike in the corner though the cynic in me knows that it’s just a prop to add a bit of hipster vibe. The fact that this loft is in Barcelona is surprising as classic warehouse living is quite unusual for a Spanish city. Most apartments are narrow with lots of little rooms leading off a central corridor and windows are small to keep the sun and heat out.

How refreshing to find this unique space which not surprisingly also doubles up as a shoot location in what must be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

FOOD HEAVEN | HEALTHY BANOFFEE PARFAITS

14 March 2014

Recipe, Topwithcinnamon,Banana, Caramel, Dates, Easy, Egg Free, Fruit, Gluten Free, Maple, Nuts, Quick, Toasted, Wholegrain

After working pretty hard and pretty late all week as well as juggling babysitters, food shopping, cooking, laundry and general looking-after-the-house tasks – did I forget anything? Oh, kids! Yes, they need juggling too – anyway, what I want to say is: I feel in need of some indulgence. Some serious gourmet indulgence.

Cue my foodie blog browsing where I came across this fabulous recipe for healthy banoffee parfaits on Top With Cinnamon. What a genius idea AND it’s healthy! Egg-free, gluten-free with plenty of fruit and your choice of either greek yoghurt if you want a breakfast combo or whipped cream for an even more indulgent, slightly less healthy, dessert variant. Both are totally fine with me.

OMG Izy, you are good! Can you believe the author of super popular Top With Cinnamon is only 18 years old, sitting her A-levels and has been blogging for 3 years!? No wonder she’s got a cook book coming out at the end of the year and though I managed to make brief contact with her she disappeared into cyberspace or more likely her kitchen again before I could ask her if I could feature her recipe. Well, actually I did ask her but she never got back to me… ho hum… dissed by an overachieving 18 year old. Never mind. I’m sure she’ll be delighted to gain some new readers from this site and still remember me when she’s joined the ranks of Jamie Oliver and Martha Stewart. Yeah, right!?

So, here is Izy’s mouth-watering recipe, just need to add it to the juggling list.

HEALTHY BANOFFEE PARFAITS WITH DATE CARAMEL AND STOVE-TOP GRANOLA

Serving Size: 3 jam jars or small glases

INGREDIENTS:

1 large, ripe banana
1 1/2 cups plain yogurt (I used a mixture of half Greek and half regular yogurt)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract (I used vanilla paste, for the speckled effect)
1 recipe of stove-top granola (see recipe below) or 2/3 cup of granola of your choice
1 recipe of cooled date caramel (see recipe below)
Slice the banana into 1/4″ thick coins (see notes if serving later). In a small bowl, stir together the yogurt and vanilla extract/paste.

DIRECTIONS:

In 3 small, clean glasses or jars, layer the ingredients like this: 2 tsp granola, a few banana coins, 1 tsp date caramel, 2 tbsp of Greek yogurt. Repeat. Do this for all the jars/glasses. To finish, top with any remaining granola, banana and caramel.

For the date caramel:
Put 1/3 cup of pitted, chopped dates (see notes), 1/3 cup of milk, 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt into a blender, blend together until smooth. Pour into a saucepan and heat whilst stirring over a low flame for 5-10 minutes, until thickened and reduced down to ~1/3 of a cup in volume. Set aside to cool.

For the stove-top granola:
Chop 3 tbsp of almonds (see notes) into small, rough chunks. Place with 1/2 cup of old-fashioned oats into a small frying pan, toast for 5 minutes over a medium heat. Then melt in 1 tsp of salted butter, and stir in 1 heaped tsp of honey just until evenly coated. Remove from the heat and set aside.

INTERIORS CRUSH | ELEGANT INTERIOR DESIGN IN BRISTOL

12 March 2014

Gabrielle-Blackman-Bristol-Home-via-ElleDeco-06

This is the home of Gabrielle Blackman, UK TV presenter on DIY SOS and interior designer. For her period home in Bristol she chose to combine a raw, almost unfinished look with some elegant pieces of furniture in accent colours like the gorgeous mustard yellow sofa and chair.

A dominant feature is the deliberately roughly painted white wooden floor reflecting light and giving it a real arty bohemian studio feel. I almost expect to see an easel surrounded by pots of paint and a muse lounging on one of those inviting period armchairs.

Her soft colour palette of different shades of grey is complimented by vintage furniture and flea market finds, some of which are painted (never perfectly) in complimenting colours like navy and green. Her decorating solution suits the period style of the property perfectly and her elegant interior design makes the space feel much loved and lived-in. A lovely bohemian family home.
