INTERIORS CRUSH | KIDS ROOMS IDEAS

10 March 2014

Morning y’all! I’m totally excited as this week we’re finally hopefully going to get actual Spring like temperatures in the UK. Yay!!! The days are getting longer, we can all wake up from our hibernation, peek out from under the duvet and blink into the beaming sun. I hope I haven’t jinxed it now as I’m writing this on a Sunday night. Fingers crossed.

Along with my newfound energy comes an enthusiasm for all things green and I’d like to introduce you to Dutch interior stylist and all-round design talent Maaike Koster of MyDeer.

She’s the creator of these beautiful kids rooms I’m featuring today and a fellow Mama of two little boys. Spookily, the similarities don’t end there. She’s also a graphic designer [tick], interiors junkie [tick], photography obsessive [tick] and she lives in the same little town in Holland as one of our best buds [so cool, and another tick]. Ok, maybe that last bit of info is only interesting to me but hey… justsayin’.

I find her kids rooms ideas truly inspiring and adore the fresh green as an accent colour in a mainly white bedroom. The industrial pendant light and antique trunk show her love for flea market finds and the green mushroom lamp is a little quirky touch and one that can also be spotted in the second featured bedroom. I like the way she’s displaying the children’s books as a piece of wall art on some shallow shelving, a simple DIY project that might even be within my grasp and no. 225 on the to-do list.

As I mentioned she’s obviously got a penchant for mushrooms [why not] with a cushion and lamp on display in the second (baby) bedroom. Appropriately dressed in much softer tones with accents of pale blue, mustard, black and white and a mix of some simple graphic patterns. The white cardboard playhouse is totally my thing and one that I’ve seen around on some trendy interiors blogs for a while but still not managed to find the source. Maaike, any tips? Finally, as a typography nerd I have to point out and totally celebrate the wall-mounted zinc 3D letter ‘L’. If that’s the initial of her baby sons name we’ve got another tick. Maybe Maaike will tell us in the comments!?

NOTE: Suffice to say Maaike also has the most dreamy Instagram feed.

COOL STUFF | HK LIVING 2014

6 March 2014

HKLIVING-via-Stylejuicer07

Happy Thursday peeps! How are you? My week has just gone crazy. I’m working on a catalogue for a client with print deadlines approaching fast and still soooo much to do. Think I’ll be working all weekend. The life of a designer, eh!? Nevertheless, the sunny weather and warmer temperatures are giving me a spring in my step and when I came across HK Living I just knew I had to share their products with you. The photography is quite masculine which I really don’t mind as there’s also a great hidden sense of humour! Bold, tough and cool I feel the collection is a bit like a big burly guy who’s a total softie on the inside. I should know, I’ve dated a few of them in my time.

HK Living was founded in the Netherlands in 2009 and their Dutch aesthetic shows through in the purity and originality of the items they design and develop. The main focus for their current collection was the addition of trendy colours as well as giving a more contemporary look.

They are cool and tough items inspired by the past and given an eclectic twist.

I love the shabby chic metal furniture and the teak bar stools with neon ‘feet’ – a neat little twist to set them apart from the mainstream.

More Dutch design coming up next week. Stay tuned!

INTERIORS CRUSH | LIVING WITH WOOD

8 January 2014

Hello, I’m back with some interior inspiration today. Staying with the woody craftsman theme this week I want to show you this Dutch Farmhouse I came across on vtwonen.

It’s a great example of how to create a clean, modern look for your home with wood and I like the fact that they refrained from trying to blend the old and new but instead keeping it distinctly separate which is also great from a conservation point of view.

The old wooden beams have become a feature of the house and are stripped bare charming the visitor with their patina. For me old wood is lovely and tactile and I defy anybody not to secretly (or openly) stroke and hug one of the beams. I know I would!

The renovation project was obviously quite considerable as there are also lots of new wooden elements, like the new barn style sliding doors, skirting boards and wooden panelling in the kitchen. I’m guessing it’s pine as it’s so light and gives a hint of an industrial look opposing the majestic beams.

In my opinion the interior works because the owners have kept the colour palette neutral and instead add interest with the different textures and colours of the old and new wood.

I bet it all smells lovely too.

A DUTCH FARMHOUSE WITH ADDED QUIRKINESS

29 November 2013

They say ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’ and I’ve got a great example to finish off this quirky week on Stylejuicer.

The 19th Century Dutch farmhouse and barn still smelt of cheese and cow when interior designer Larissa van Seumeren and her partner Peter Kool bought it. They wanted to preserve the character of the place and make it environmentally friendly but also needed it to work for them as a family home with two children.

I’m most impressed by their brave choice of colour scheme and the way that they have treated each room individually, adding quirky and upcycled touches like mismatched patterns, rugs, wallpapers and old bricks that form the base of the bathroom sink. They used dark grey for the ceilings in the main kitchen/dining/living space and bright red in the more formal living room with a clock case to match. Being a fan of all shades of white and off-whites (sometimes pushing it to pale greys) I have to hand it to them: It totally works and I love it!

The cathedral-esque ceilings can take the dark colour and bring a feeling of warmth and coziness to the large area supported by an open fire place. The bright coloured dining table and mismatched patterns of the corner sofa add playfulness and fun into the home and I can imagine that their kids – plus little friends – all have a ball running around and playing hide and seek.

This interior is a brave choice and could have gone horribly wrong but the fact that each living area is so different adds interest and makes you want to discover and snoop around the place which is just what I’m going to let you do now.

Maybe you’ll consider adding some quirky touches to your place. Nobody wants to be beige, do they!?
