COLOURFUL ACCENTS IN SWEDISH HOME

20 May 2014

Colourful-Home-by-Stadshem-via-Stylejuicer-01

Phew… after yesterday’s colour explosion I feel the need to calm things down here on the blog. Not too much though as today I’d like to show you a mainly white Swedish home that has been perked up with lots and lots of colourful accents as well as strong graphic prints and patterns.

I found this via estate agents Stadshem and I like that it’s a real home. Well, of course it’s styled for the shoot to show it off in the best possible manner but it’s nice to see pots and pans, burnt candle wicks and a messy cushions lying around.

In many way this is a classic Swedish period apartment with high ceilings and the almost obligatory, white floor boards. It’s stripped bare but the owners obviously have a love for colour and seem to have gone for a more-is-more approach adding colour and pattern with almost every accessory.

I really like this concept as it gives enormous flexibility to chop and change and mix it up according to the seasons and / or your mood. If you don’t fancy a colour anymore, just remove that throw / cushion / pot / chair and start again.

My own home is very neutral and mainly white which relaxes me as I work with photos and colour on a daily basis. However, I sometimes toy with the idea of adding some bold accents until I see the children’s toys strewn around and I quickly change my mind.

It’s nice to see in these photos that there’s no need to be scared of colour or even graphic prints and patterns and you can just add colourful bits and pieces little by little. Start small with a colourful jug or cushion that you can move around and see how it blends in with your surroundings and slowly work your way up to painting a chair. Advice that’s easier given than implemented I know!

If you need some more encouragement and inspiration on how to add colour to your home have a look at Mr Bright Bazaar, Will Taylor’s new book ‘Embracing Colour For Make-You-Smile Style’.

You can read a fabulously detailed review with lots of examples on my blogging buddy Geraldine’s blog Little Big Bell. Enjoy and I dare you to buy something colourful this week.

INTERIORS CRUSH | MELBOURNE HOME OF STYLIST SIMONE HAAG

14 May 2014

Simone-Haag-Melbourne-by-Armelle-Habib-via-Stylejuicer-01

This should actually be a double crush as firstly, it’s in Australia – currently trending with me – and secondly, the interior is Scandinavian inspired which is always a winner on Stylejuicer.

The owners are stylist Simone Haag, her husband Rhys and a rather large dog called Tank. Incredibly, they managed to renovate this previously rather dark 1970s style timber home on the outskirts of Melbourne in just 3 months and now call it affectionately ‘The Log Cabin’.

Simone works for interior designers Hecker Guthrie who also gave guidance during the refurbishment. The house was totally repainted an off-white inside and a new Austrian larch floor was laid out in the main living and dining area. Kitchen and bathroom were gutted and I imagine the house must have smelt divine with all that fresh paint and wood… gorgeous.

The interior design reminds me in parts of a Swedish summer cabin and I adore the furnishing and decor which is coherent throughout and has a relaxed, clean and modern feel. The brick wall in the living area with a low and wide fire place give away the 70s origin of the house adding to it’s charm.

One of my favourite places has to be the serene uncluttered study with large filing cabinets and sexy wooden stationery items. I could happily sit there blogging and day dreaming.

If I don’t show up on this blog anymore you know where I am. On second thoughts Simone and Rhys might have something to say about that as I believe they might be expecting a new arrival that’s a lot smaller than me.

INTERIORS CRUSH | DEBORAH GORDON’S MONOCHROME HOME

9 May 2014

Deborah-Gordon-Home-by-Douglas-Gibb-via-Stylejuicer-01

Happy Friday peeps! I’m excited to feature my first guest post on Stylejuicer today by the lovely Alison from Her Indoors. Alison lives in Scotland and is the wife of interiors photographer Douglas Gibb and today she’ll be sharing photos of another fellow blogger from Scotland, Deborah Gordon.

Deborah’s blog is called Ollie & Seb’s Haus, after her two sons, and OMG it truly is a beautiful Haus and home. She has a background in interior design, visual merchandising and styling and has worked the monochrome look in a stunning way. Plus, I like the fact that she has used the German word Haus for her blog name. I’m also a huge fan of her Instagram feed (me along with 81k others) and love her shots for the 52 week project, a portrait of her children, once a week, every week, in 2014.

After this build up I bet you can’t wait to scroll through the fabulous shots by Douglas and read what Alison has to say about it. Pop over to Her Indoors for more interior eye-candy.

A colourful home is a decision and a commitment that we might not all want to make. We don’t all want to live with intense colours! Actually monochrome is highly fashionable at the moment and a very achievable route to creating a very stylish home.

Well known blogger, Deborah Gordon of Ollie & Seb’s Haus, has committed totally to monochrome. Black is the only accent colour in her all white home, that she shares with her husband and two little boys, in Glasgow, apart from the odd plant or toy!

I just can’t get enough of this place…I know from following her that she loves to ring the changes… how can monochrome be so un-boring??

Definitely to be re-visited!

Thank you Alison! X

INDUSTRIAL STYLE PARIS HOME

30 April 2014

Petra-Bindel-Virginie-Denny-Alfonso-Valles-via-Stylejuicer-06

This industrial style townhouse is part of an old button factory in Paris. You can tell that the owners Virginie and Alfonso are artists who wanted to preserve the factory feel whilst adding vintage and eclectic finds from flea markets and antiques shops.

A very unusual home not least as they’ve built the kitchen on site – in concrete – with open shelves! A brave choice but I like how they’ve managed to combine their vintage feel with modern pieces of furniture which works surprisingly well in this converted industrial building.

The colour palette is very subdued with lots of greys, browns and olives. Even their son Leon’s bedroom has been painted in a warm olive which is an interesting choice for a kids room but blends in with the rest of the interior.

Being artists who live and work in the same place interesting pieces can be found everywhere and personally I like all the typographic elements on display, some of which are hand-made by Alfonso and some are finds from antique shops.

Clearly a designer-maker most of the furniture is also made by Alfonso, like the large dining and coffee table and his paintings are on display throughout the house. I admire their style and love their eclectic mix but personally I’d like my surroundings to be a bit more cheerful. In fact, I’ve got a great INTERIORS CRUSH coming up this Friday. Stay tuned!

What do you think of Virginie and Alfonso’s home?

INTERIORS CRUSH | STYLIST EMMA PERSSON LAGERBERG’S HOME

22 April 2014

Emma Persson Lagerberg, Home, Stylist, Interior, Swedish, Scandinavia, Photography, Styling, Family Residence

Hello, how is everyone?! I’m back from a wonderfully relaxing week at my mum’s and feel like I’ve been off the grid for a month as the only access to the world wide web was via a dodgy old PC.

I thought I’d be all fidgety and getting internet cold turkey, wanting to check emails, pin and share the beautiful countryside I was surrounded by but in the end I really didn’t miss it at all and feel great after having such a long break from the screen. I highly recommend it!

The positive side effect of a break from the world wide noise is that I my brain feels refreshed and I’m newly inspired. So let’s kick off the new week with Swedish stylist Emma Persson Lagerberg’s home.

What a cool Mama! I love the fact she’s all kick-ass power-dressed surrounded by adorable children and leaving hubby to hold the baby. I wonder if that’s a reflection of their set up at home or if it’s just a little tongue-in-cheek. Either way… Go Girl!

In many ways her home is typical Scandinavian with white floors and walls in a period apartment but being such a great stylist she cleverly combines old and new furniture and lighting with quirky art and objects to give an inspiring look. I love the fact that she chose a grey-ish mint as an accent colour for her kitchen cabinets and I wonder if she’s already changed to a different colour by the time you’re reading this.

The kids bed- and playroom are super fun with a great big chalkboard and clever under-bed storage units for those fiddly Lego bits. Suits the kids and pleases mum’s aesthetic. Score!

In case you’re wondering my favourite photographer of the moment, Petra Bindel, took these wonderful photos. She also shot the story for Susanna Vento’s home and Muuto, all previously featured on Stylejuicer. Enjoy!
