INTERIORS CRUSH | QUIRKY AND RUSTIC HOME IN IBIZA

29 August 2014

Ibiza-Luis-Galliussi-by-Ricardo-Labougle-01

Oh, this door – it had me at hello. I’m currently totally crushing on renovated holiday homes with rustic original features and this home in Ibiza got me dreaming about a September holiday in the Med.

It’s the perfect month for me. The crowds are gone, the sun has lost it’s intensity and you don’t have to reserve a sunbed with your towel the night before. Being German I’m sensitive about this cliché and for the record I’ve never knowingly taken part in such appalling behaviour.

So, come and soak up some sun and relaxed holiday vibes through these gorgeous photographs by Ricardo Labougle. The owner is interior designer Luis Galliussi who renovated and extended this simple peasant house set back from the party atmosphere amongst fig and olive trees. In addition to the stunning infinity pool he added a living room with fireplace and two bedrooms with bathrooms, all in the traditional cubic style so the house nestles quietly into the countryside.

His quirky choices of furniture and bright colours are refreshing and I get the impression he just had some fun with this project. Where else would you find garden gnomes, an umbrella above the dining table and army style camouflage pillows in the guest bedroom?

I like this home that’s simple and unassuming on the outside but hides so many treasures on the inside, presenting relaxed country loving with a twinkle in the eye.

And don’t get me started on that kitchen island… #dreamy

STYLIST’S BLUE BEACH HOUSE IN SYDNEY

27 June 2014

Modernist-Beach-House-Sydney-01

This beautiful modernist beach house in Sydney was recently featured in Australia’s Inside Out Magazine – one of my favourites for interior eye candy from down under.

It belongs to interior stylist Karen Kelly Tarasin and has been lovingly filled with Nordic modernist furniture and a few selected modern pieces like the Muuto lamps above the dining table and sofa.

Maybe it’s the lighting or the fresh green and exotic leaves that peek through the windows but this home feels so fresh and cozy to me. I notice there are plants and flowers on display everywhere but all blending in apart from the ‘Rio’ garden column in the hallway which houses six individual vases for flower displays.

My favourite piece of art has to be the bull skull over the classic Saarinen ‘Tulip’ dining table – aren’t those horns magnificent!? I wonder what the emerald green decoration on the skull is.

I like how the overall colour palette is pared back and dominated by white, blonde wood and earthy tones with a few navy accents. Even the artwork of mostly black and white photography blends in with the owners collection of vintage Danish furniture and makes this home feel calm and peaceful.

Interestingly the outside is painted in a strong Matisse blue and a complete contrast to the serene inside.

What do you make of this bold contrast?

POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORS IN COPENHAGEN HOME

20 June 2014

Polished-Concrete-Home-by-Peter-Kragballe-01

This open plan apartment is home to Lina and Thomas who both work in fashion and design and it’s conveniently located in central Copenhagen near the Royal Garden. The small but impressive industrial space has been totally gutted and I like how the owners have taken great care not to strip out it’s character.

Though walls, windows and ceiling are painted pristine white they managed to subtly add interest through a mix of materials. You can find roughly plastered walls, painted brickwork and wooden beams as well as an old metal pillar located centrally in the kitchen and dining area. In contrast, the newly installed kitchen cabinets are black veneer with a super smooth white work surface that sits comfortably next to the rough walls.

Interestingly, the object that first caught my eye – after the showstopping polished concrete floors – is the wooden dining table on a steel frame that looks as if it’s had many a good feast served. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture and I love how it contrasts with the polished concrete floors. As most nordic countries are often starved of natural daylight the glossy surfaces in this space, especially the flooring, reflect the light coming in through various large industrial windows beautifully.

I was umming and ahhing whether I should add this space to my Interiors Crush column but in the end decided it’s not a perfect love match for me. Though I love concrete and the many creative ways it can be applied the high gloss flooring is a little bit too shiny for me and I can imagine it might feel a bit cold.

I’d love to find out what you think of the polished concrete floors. Love it or hate it?

SMALL SPACES | WHITE HOUSE IN DELFT

28 May 2014

white, home, delft, netherlands, nu interieur ontwerp, interior design, modern, clean, light, bright, minimalist, monochrome

After so much colour on the blog last week I want to share a very pure white interior with you today that caught my eye on the fabulous Nordic Days blog.

It’s a second home in Delft, Netherlands and was renovated by the talented designers Nathalie and Tessa from Nu Interieur Ontwerp with the brief of making the small space feel as big and bright as possible.

I’m always fascinated by white spaces and how they make you feel. Just from looking at the photos I feel strangely uplifted and calm. With the white floors boards, walls, ceiling and stairs it reminds me of a photographers studio and I particularly like all the in-built storage space and the neat little window seat in the kitchen for, errr… day-dreaming – at least that’s what I would do.

I like how the few plants and natural wooden elements break the space up a little and give it a bit of a homely feel. I also spotted a fire place which I’m sure will make this just the cosiest space and I can see the owner snuggling up with her adorable dog on the sofa.

There are also some clever design elements that Nathalie and Tessa incorporated like their leather strap handles which come in different sizes and colours and the little oak foot stool that I’ve fallen in love with. A gorgeous design, sturdy, useful and only getting better with age – perfect.

I love this white house! And now I want to paint my own home all white. *day-dreams*

INTERIOR INSPIRATION | NOSTALGIC KIDS ROOM DECOR

23 May 2014

Home, interior, Kids room, idea, character, colourful, hand-printed, wallpaper, Bastien Halard, Miranda Brooks, Brooklyn, NYC, quirky, eclectic, vintage, flea market, antiques, charm

You’d be forgiven if you thought that these beautiful little girls live in an old stately home somewhere in the rural English countryside. At least that’s what I thought when I saw the gorgeous images by Francois Halard.

The owners Miranda Brooks, a landscape designer, and her architect husband Bastien Halard used to live in Manhattan but were craving a characterful property and some outside space which led them over the bridge to Brooklyn and to a tired old four storey townhouse with a small garden.

You can see the whole home tour on Vogue but today I’m just going to tease you with these images of the colourful kids room decor. Luckily, Papa Bastien didn’t want the home to be an architectural statement – presumably he deals with those on a daily basis – but instead preferred to give the house it’s history and charm back by adding eclectic finds from around the world as well as antiques and flea market discoveries.

The hand-printed wallpaper with natural motives of birds and leaves is one of the first things I noticed and it works incredibly well in combination with the simple antique furniture, painted in strong colours, and white painted ceilings and floors. I also love the choice of full-length neutral colour curtains with just a little contrast edging. Vintage toys add to the charm of the girls’ bedrooms and the playroom’s picture wall is a lovely idea for displaying art projects.

It all feels quite nostalgic with just the right amount of modern quirky bits mixed in. A beautiful house with an interior that deceives it’s location… Brooklyn? Really?
