COOL STUFF | ODE TO THINGS

Cool-Stuff-Ode-To-Things-via-Stylejuicer02

Ode To Things popped into my world via my Pinterest feed. I was intrigued by the logo and the minute I lay eyes on their products I was hooked. This fabulous online microstore who are based in New England must have heard my mantra of simple, modern design and ordered everything off my secret wish list. How did they get into my head!?

I simply love their products! It’s all quite minimalist and a bit Japanese but with a European twist. A great mixture of simple but beautifully made and ultimately useful ‘things’. Objects that add style, utility and fun to our lives and their concise collection of everyday items brings together form, function and elegance.

I adore how enthusiastic they are about their products:

“These products are designed passionately and manufactured with high precision and craftsmanship. Objects to adore, admire and cherish everyday. Touch them. Feel them. Love, use and share them. Rave about them. That’s what we do.”

Well, I guess I’ve just done that!

NO OXYMORON – A SUMMER COTTAGE IN BROOKLYN, NYC

12 August 2013

A summer cottage and Brooklyn are not normally two words associated with each other but artists Lyndsay Caleo, a jewellery designer, and Fitzhugh Karol a woodworker/sculptor have achieved just that with their first renovation project.

When I first read about their summer cottage in Brooklyn I was impressed by their eclectic style, clever layout and neutral colour palette with handcrafted pieces of furniture.

The artistic couple say in their own words:

It’s all about creating a departure. We both grew up in the country and we designed the house to be an escape from the city. We designed the layout based on our needs, how we lived and what we had. Our design philosophy involves playing with the balance between new and old. We mix architectural elements that were created 100 years ago with furniture we make, natural elements and modern designs.

We love classically Scandinavian simplicity – particularly old summer cottages. Materials are a huge inspiration. Whether it be an old salvaged chunk of wood or a stack of white linens, materials are often what drive the vision for a space and sometimes stumbling across an object will send us in a new direction on a particular project. We also use light a lot of as a medium and we always try to move light into all corners of a project using the layouts, glass panels and whites.

Lyndsay and Fitzhugh also work for the Brooklyn Home Company, a family-run cooperative of artists and builders committed to creating world-class and innovative living spaces in Brooklyn.

RESTORED COUNTRY HOME IN TASMANIA

17 July 2013

For most of us Tasmania feels a long way away but what a treat of a home when you finally make it there.

Edwina and Mark were married on the porch of their beautifully restored country home in which they have clearly invested a lot of love and attention to detail. The doors that form the main entrance are antique French and Edwina painted the floorboards in the main hallway in a checkerboard pattern which draws you inside.

The changing tableau in the hallway features beachcomb finds and the fact that Edwina grows her own peonies – my favourite flower – is the icing on the cake.

STUNNING MODERNIST VILLA IN SKIATHOS, GREECE

A breathtaking view and beautiful sunny surroundings always help when you’re building your dream home but this design has been meticulously thought through and the result is simply stunning.

The villa cleverly merges inside and outside, maximising the benefits of both and minimising the impact on the surrounding landscape. There are various flexible panels and glazed screens providing coziness without sacrificing the open-plan living.

The infinity pool is strategically placed making the most of the view and creating a cooling breeze over the terrace and into the living area. The design even has green credentials with photovoltaic panels powering the pool mechanics and grey-water recycling for irrigation and toilet flushing. Trees are integrated and stand undisturbed with a green roof that blends into the landscape.

Get ready to dive in and dream…

VINTAGE 1950s SEASIDE SHACK IN NEW ZEALAND

1 July 2013

779685-1_lp

This modern and inspiring seaside shack belongs to stylist Anna Church and is nestled in the picturesque cove of New Zealand’s Waiheke Island.

Anna takes inspiration from her surrounds and has painted the hallway in a shade of turqouise echoing the colours of the sea. A girl after my own heart she says “I love to achieve a look on a budget,” and she customises roadside and beachcomb finds. “I like elegant, layered interiors, with a bit of quirk mixed in,” says Anna of the bedroom which has a tropical feel with an artwork by Waiheke artist Emma Wright. Anna says “it’s nautical, but not in an obvious way.
