MOOD BOARD | SUNNY SIDE UP

19 June 2013

mood board, kids, toys, yellow, sunny side up

Yellow is my favourite colour and always has been since Kindergarten, my knee jerk answer to ‘what’s your favourite colour’.

It’s so ingrained that I don’t even think about why it’s my favourite colour anymore. Putting this yellow kids mood board together has made me realise that not only do I associate yellow with sunshine and warmth but it makes me feel happy and upbeat. For me yellow has got energy. It’s fun and loud and noisy and laughs in your face so nothing bad can be yellow, right!? I realise that not everybody may be a fan but hopefully this post will bring a little sunshine to your day.

Sunny side up!

STEPH BAXTER HAND-DRAWN TYPOGRAPHY

1 June 2013

I'm in love with Steph Baxter's illustrative style combining traditional hand-drawn typography and photography. steph baxter, hand drawn, lettering, typography, photography, illustration, illustrator, designer, graphic design, style, trend, earthy, the happy pencil, etsy, shop, humour, greeting cards

Pencil, paper and a hot cup of tea (milk, no sugar) – by her own admission illustrator and typographer Steph Baxter is happiest when the above is supplied and her imagination and pencil can run wild. Oh, and she loves amusement arcades, cats and cupcakes.

An interesting combination of ‘likes’ Steph’s clearly got a good sense of humour which comes out in her illustrations. My personal favourite is her combination of traditional hand-drawn typography and photography as seen in the ‘Best Dressing’ illustration above. Though the children’s illustrations are adorable and very commercial.

She also sells her own line of greeting cards and art prints on Etsy with the memorable shop name of The Happy Pencil.

ALBUM DI FAMIGLIA | AN ITALIAN FAMILY AFFAIR

22 May 2013

Album Di Famiglia via Stylejuicer

Looking at Album Di Famiglia’s product shots I can just imagine how soft and luxurious the fabrics must feel and I want to wrap myself and my kids up in them and lounge around all day. Ok, we’re not quite your quintessential avant-garde family but this doesn’t distract from the values of this hip luxury clothing brand for adults and children.

It’s designed by Monica Rusconi and exclusively produced in small workshops in Italy, thus supporting the local economy and earning green credentials. As already mentioned the fabrics are of the highest quality, extremely soft and perfectly cut with minimalist shapes. The range is designed with comfort in mind and has been called the ‘avant-garde of italian baby fashion’. The clothes come in a muted and understated colourpalette that can be dressed up or down. Their branding and packaging is just as lovingly put together and complements the range beautifully.

When entertaining is your passion, your house is your stage. What better location than the Hollywood Hills with a view of Los Angeles? The clients gave designer Chad Eisner a clear brief for updating their 1970s house. It had to be modern with nods to the past, in particular Art Deco and incorporate their love of Africa.

Chad also managed to give the salon a pre-war French feel that’s romantic and sexy. You could argue that the colour palette is a dull beige and brown but Chad explains: ‘The tone-on-tone color scheme was another nod to Africa. Plus we didn’t want to distract from the views. But there are very subtle hints of color in the fabrics, in the pillows and the welting, which is one of the ways you can warm up or cool down a space with a tight palette. There are light blues and pale lavenders and even some understated rose hues.’
All fabrics were carefully chosen to stimulate the sense of touch and most of the upholstery is velvet and suede. To balance the man-made with the natural, he chose a nubby raw silk for the curtains and the Mansour Modern rugs have hemp in the weave, which gives a little roughness to the refinement. Some of the furniture is customised which is not always as expensive as you think recommends Chad and the unique factor gives it that extra bit of wow which is important to keep your clients happy. Most importantly none of the interior design distracts from the leading character: the beautiful view which serves as a gorgeous backdrop for Chad’s clients successful entertaining.

DUDE RANCH IN TUSCON, ARIZONA

10 May 2013

I’ve always wanted to stay at a proper Dude Ranch and see the landscape so familiar from classic Westerns and adverts.

Somebody who’s been there, done it and got the t-shirt is Vanessa Jackman, a photographer and (travel) writer who captures your imagination with a double dose for the senses. She even suggest a playlist of basically anything by Glen Campbell (By the Time I get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Rhinestone Cowboy) and a dress-code so you won’t be frowned upon (Jeans, R.M. Williams boots and cowboy hats. The more denim, the better).

Below is an excerpt of her stay at the White Stallion Ranch in Tuscon, Arizona.

The first ride gave us the chance to familiarise ourselves with our horses, the Western style of riding and breathe in the exquisite beauty of the 3,000 acre property owned by the True Family. The Sonoran desert landscape truly is breathtaking: Big blue skies contrast against the soft brown and beige tones of the arid desert floor, abundant cacti (including the magnificent Saguaro cactus with its almost humanlike characteristics) punctuate the landscape as far as the eye can see, longhorn cattle poke lazily about in the scrub keeping a watchful eye on the horses as they pass, and in the distance the rugged peaks of the Tucson mountains rise majestically. It is not hard to understand why dozens of movies, commercials and stills have been shot at the White Stallion Ranch over the years: it is the unspoilt terrain of my wistful childhood dreams.

If your appetite is whet read on here.
