INTERIORS CRUSH | STYLIST EMMA PERSSON LAGERBERG’S HOME

22 April 2014

Hello, how is everyone?! I’m back from a wonderfully relaxing week at my mum’s and feel like I’ve been off the grid for a month as the only access to the world wide web was via a dodgy old PC.

I thought I’d be all fidgety and getting internet cold turkey, wanting to check emails, pin and share the beautiful countryside I was surrounded by but in the end I really didn’t miss it at all and feel great after having such a long break from the screen. I highly recommend it!

The positive side effect of a break from the world wide noise is that I my brain feels refreshed and I’m newly inspired. So let’s kick off the new week with Swedish stylist Emma Persson Lagerberg’s home.

What a cool Mama! I love the fact she’s all kick-ass power-dressed surrounded by adorable children and leaving hubby to hold the baby. I wonder if that’s a reflection of their set up at home or if it’s just a little tongue-in-cheek. Either way… Go Girl!

In many ways her home is typical Scandinavian with white floors and walls in a period apartment but being such a great stylist she cleverly combines old and new furniture and lighting with quirky art and objects to give an inspiring look. I love the fact that she chose a grey-ish mint as an accent colour for her kitchen cabinets and I wonder if she’s already changed to a different colour by the time you’re reading this.

The kids bed- and playroom are super fun with a great big chalkboard and clever under-bed storage units for those fiddly Lego bits. Suits the kids and pleases mum’s aesthetic. Score!

In case you’re wondering my favourite photographer of the moment, Petra Bindel, took these wonderful photos. She also shot the story for Susanna Vento’s home and Muuto, all previously featured on Stylejuicer. Enjoy!

SORRENTO BEACH HOUSE BY SHAREEN JOEL DESIGN

17 April 2014

Sorrento-Beach-House-Shareen-Joel-Design-via-Stylejuicer-07

This beautiful weekend getaway on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria belongs to interior designer and founder of inspiration blog Share Design Shareen Joel and her family of four. I’m rather envious of her little gem as in my opinion it has all the components that a home-from-home should have: set in a great (coastal) location with a sociable layout and a simple, casual and relaxed interior.

Cleverly integrated into the coastal landscape the house with it’s L-shaped floor plan is easy to live in centering around a sheltered decked terrace and an old Moonah tree. The natural light flooding in from those gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows helps with the flow of the semi open-plan space where the living and kitchen/dining areas are partitioned off with a (kitchen) storage unit and integrated wood burner. A sign that even in Victoria it does get chilly which for some reason I find hard to fathom.

What I love most about the house is the black timber cladding and contrasting natural timber window frames and doors. On entering the space is almost completely white with Larch floorboards and a mix of vintage and design pieces. Accent colours are kept to a minimum and only provided through crockery and soft furnishings. The overall feel is very clean and minimalist with natural textures like wood and worn leather chairs taking the lead.

I wish there were more shots of the outside of the house and the surrounding landscape as I’m sure the coastline must be beautiful and I read that Shareen’s husband and son are sailing nuts. Maybe the outside shower with the old fashioned zinc tub is for them to rinse off after a tough ride on the ocean waves!?

INTERIORS CRUSH | AMSTERDAM WAREHOUSE

7 April 2014

Amsterdam-Warehouse-via-Milk-Magazine-08

Hello to you! Did you all have a nice weekend? It seems ages that I shared an Interiors Crush with you so today’s feature is extra special. There are of course many, many gorgeous lofts out there – remember the London loft or the one in Barcelona I recently featured?

Hold on to your hats as today’s original Amsterdam warehouse is particularly impressive with it’s boho industrial vibe beautifully captured by Louise Desrosiers.

The space centres around an unusual enclosed patio garden from which light filters into the rest of the house through huge industrial style windows. A ginormous exposed brick wall sets the tone for the mix-and-match interior with antiques and flea market finds giving a relaxed atmosphere.

The colour palette is all earthy with emphasis on natural textures like rough, old wood, animal hides and weathered metal. Interestingly, there are no pops of colour, hardly any painted surfaces and no bling to speak of with the only concession being the polished concrete floor. A totally harmonious space, befitting of the arty Jordaan neighbourhood where Rembrandt spent the last few years of his life.

I’m rather envious of the owners work/life set up as interior designer Marius runs his business Flow from one side of the building while wife Emily designs beautiful organic kids clothes for Gray Label in her studio on the other side. I imagine they romantically meet for lunch on the patio or in the open-plan kitchen under the impressive black clay chandelier, handmade in Africa, to share a spot of organic goodies. *Sigh*

I bet the kids are having a ball in this space chasing each other, bike racing and hiding in their tipee.

STYLIST SUSANNA VENTO’S GRAPHIC AND BOLD HOME

1 April 2014

Petra Bindel Photography, Susanna Vento, Stylist, Helsinki, Finland, Bold, Graphic, 80s, Patterns, Colourful, Design, Interior, Playful

Wow, that lady is not scared of anything! Or something along those lines came to mind when I saw Petra Bindel’s shots of stylist Susanna Vento’s Helsinki home for Dwell Magazine.

Susanna is quite clearly a master of her craft and the bold primary colours and graphic patterns are just about tamed by the stark white backdrop and could easily be changed depending on the mood.

This is urban scandinavian living on ecstasy and reminds me of the 80s. Go girl!

What I love about her home is that her style works so well with kids. I’m sure her daughter loves all the colour and patterns around her especially during those long winter months when the sun doesn’t rise and playing indoors is the only option.

I adore the way Susanna has integrated little playful elements throughout the house. Watch out for the co-ordinating details like blue ‘feet’ and bench in the dining area, neon horses and light cables in the bedroom and the graphic triangles and light bulb-garland in the kitchen.

I’m sure she’d hate me for calling it adorable but it is as well as being super cool.

NOTE: If this is totally down your street then I’ve got a little treat for you tomorrow when I’ll be featuring a Dutch home and accessories label that would fit right in with Susanna’s bold and graphic home. Stay tuned!

INTERIORS CRUSH | BOHEMIAN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

26 March 2014

Bohemian, Lille, Industrial, Relaxed, Character, DIY, Flea Market Finds, Concrete, Interior Design, Personality, Inviting, Family Home

This might not seem like my usual INTERIORS CRUSH but the space, the sheer space had me at ‘hello’. Just look at it! There’s so much of it! Proper S P A C E ! Wow! You could have an orchestra playing in it and still fit an audience of about 100 people in it. Well, maybe a small-ish orchestra.

This is not to say that it’s too big. Quite the opposite. Fanny and Pascal Francois have managed to transform this former factory in Lille, Belgium into a warm and welcoming family home thanks to their wonderfully eclectic and bohemian industrial sense of style.

The piece de resistance for me is the converted fishmongers bench into the mother of all kitchen islands including a sink. Pure genius and what a perfect fit!

Avid flea market hunters and DIYers the vast majority of the furniture is reclaimed or custom made to fit their specific needs. I love the vast open-plan kitchen / dining / living area with deliberately mismatched chairs around a handmade table by Pascal himself. Have you noticed that there’s space for 10 people – easily! T E N ! Living in a city where space is at a premium I can only dream of dinner parties that size.

Oh, did I mention that Pascal is an architect? So gutting the downstairs area and re-organising the layout was kind of a must. The other musts were replacing the industrial style windows with identical insulted ones (very sensible), pouring a polished concrete floor (very cool) and sandblasting / white-washing the brickwork (very boho) to keep the industrial look of the space.

With their personal eclectic and often colourful touches the space is transformed and becomes a warm and welcoming family home. I love the colourful vases and bottles lined up along the window sill which only work if your kids have reached a certain age… You guessed, we’re not there yet but I can dream.
