BREXIT | IT’S BEEN A FUNNY FEW WEEKS

Moving house, designing a new AW collection for Wild Boys & Girls and the decision by the British public to exit the European Union has had me paralysed. Sort of like a sudden death where you want to hit the reset button so everything goes back to how it was before. I just can’t believe this actually happened. Brexit? WTF!

I haven’t felt like posting and writing about my inspirations. It felt wrong and meaningless. Truth is: I’m devastated and scared for our future. I made a choice to live and work in this country nearly 20 years ago and have embraced the British culture and people with enthusiasm becoming a real Anglophile.

I love the sense of humour, the famous stiff upper lip, the British eccentricity and quirky rituals. The fact that they don’t mind making a fool of themselves – how ironic! The mix of cultures from around the world and the diversity that comes with it makes this society rich and colourful. I feel completely accepted and integrated into this hodgepot which I put down to a deeply ingrained sense of tolerance and championing of the individual. Britains are critical. They question authority. They are not sheep following a leader. This is what I love about Britain.

So what happened? Has this nation collectively lost their marbles? I’m speechless.

So well put, it feels we are going head on into a disaster and worst of all people have chosen this. I just feel utterly helpless and at the mercy of people I don’t trust and who don’t care about our future. Plus for the first time in 20 years I feel aware I’m a foreigner.

Thank you for this. I quite agree, and I’m British but multi-lingual and have a multi-national family. Let’s hope that the British love of diversity resurfaces somehow and soon.

Try being an American these days, I think the whole world has gone crackers. I worry about J and V and the kids in NYC. Cooler heads used to prevail, no most heads are warming up. Good luck to you ,your business and your family in the Uk and please keep the rest of us in your thoughts.

I feel your pain. The referendum has left me feeling scared and helpless too – and wondering how the heck I can keep an EU passport! The only thing to remember is that so many British people didn’t vote for this, and would passionately like to stay in the EU and keep the country diverse. We need to make sure their voices are head too x
