CONTEMPORARY LOFT IN BARCELONA

17 March 2014

Barcelona-loft-via-Stylejuicer01

This is classic contemporary loft living without the sleek finish that most interiors now feature. The big lead factory windows and the simple and neutral colour scheme combined with flea market furniture are totally old skool but strangely appealing.

I like that it’a all still a bit rough around the edges and the ceiling beams have just been given a white coat of paint without being meticulously sanded down first. There’s a charm that comes with an unfinished look proving that interiors don’t always have to be polished and over-styled.

The apartment has got a laid back feel about it and I love the bike in the corner though the cynic in me knows that it’s just a prop to add a bit of hipster vibe. The fact that this loft is in Barcelona is surprising as classic warehouse living is quite unusual for a Spanish city. Most apartments are narrow with lots of little rooms leading off a central corridor and windows are small to keep the sun and heat out.

How refreshing to find this unique space which not surprisingly also doubles up as a shoot location in what must be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

INTERIORS CRUSH | ELEGANT INTERIOR DESIGN IN BRISTOL

12 March 2014

Gabrielle-Blackman-Bristol-Home-via-ElleDeco-06

This is the home of Gabrielle Blackman, UK TV presenter on DIY SOS and interior designer. For her period home in Bristol she chose to combine a raw, almost unfinished look with some elegant pieces of furniture in accent colours like the gorgeous mustard yellow sofa and chair.

A dominant feature is the deliberately roughly painted white wooden floor reflecting light and giving it a real arty bohemian studio feel. I almost expect to see an easel surrounded by pots of paint and a muse lounging on one of those inviting period armchairs.

Her soft colour palette of different shades of grey is complimented by vintage furniture and flea market finds, some of which are painted (never perfectly) in complimenting colours like navy and green. Her decorating solution suits the period style of the property perfectly and her elegant interior design makes the space feel much loved and lived-in. A lovely bohemian family home.

INTERIORS CRUSH | SHABBY CHIC COTTAGE IN CORNWALL

4 February 2014

Shabby Chic Cornwall by Paul Massey via Stylejuicer

Here’s another reason why I love England: Quirky names for tiny villages, towns and places like Piddletrenthide, Puddletown, Ramsbottom, Affpuddle or Badger’s Mount. It sounds like something out of The Hobbit but I’m convinced J. R. R. Tolkien just took inspiration from reading a map of his native England.

You can imagine my delight when I found out that today’s interior inspiration, a converted fisherman’s net loft, is located in Mousehole, Cornwall. What a cute name and I’m totally crushing on that shabby chic coastal look by owner, serial renovator and interior photographer Paul Massey.

The loft was built in the 1800s and has an upside down layout with bed- and bathrooms on the ground floor and living and kitchen upstairs to take full advantage of the sea views as Mousehole is an attractive tourist destination and fishing port on the far south west coast of England.

The place has got a lovely modern coastal feel with sun bleached wood and eclectic finds from around the world collected during Paul’s travels. The colourpalette has been kept soft with neutral greys, stone and white and a clever layering paint method, applying a light shade over a dark shade before sanding, gives it a lived-in vintage look.

I love the exposed A-frame beams which remind you of the house’s former use as a fishing net loft. Interestingly the flooring throughout is made of cheap but tough scaffolding boards which were washed with white spirit before being sealed with wax oil. Hmm, I’m not sure how smooth this would be underfoot but who cares you’d probably walk around this place in nice thick felt slippers or sheepskin boots before curling up in front of that gorgeous wood burner reading about Middle Earth.

NOTE: If you’ve fallen in love with the place there’s good news! You can rent the adjacent holiday cottage via Unique Home Stays. Score!

VINTAGE 1950s SEASIDE SHACK IN NEW ZEALAND

1 July 2013

This modern and inspiring seaside shack belongs to stylist Anna Church and is nestled in the picturesque cove of New Zealand’s Waiheke Island.

Anna takes inspiration from her surrounds and has painted the hallway in a shade of turqouise echoing the colours of the sea. A girl after my own heart she says “I love to achieve a look on a budget,” and she customises roadside and beachcomb finds. “I like elegant, layered interiors, with a bit of quirk mixed in,” says Anna of the bedroom which has a tropical feel with an artwork by Waiheke artist Emma Wright. Anna says “it’s nautical, but not in an obvious way.
