PLACES TO GO | HALLY’S CAFE AND DELI IN SW LONDON

25 April 2014

OMG! Californian beach house vibe in London!? I just came across Hally’s – a fabulous little cafe and deli – and have to share their stunning interior with you. I’m sure the food is equally divine, though I haven’t been, but trust me it’s going to be my next port of call as it’s not very far from us in South West London.

Hally’s serves Californian-inspired food using organic and ethical produce as much as possible. The owners Anna and Philip were inspired by a road trip to the Golden State and opened the cafe and deli last June.

It was Anna’s lifelong dream to open a restaurant and after acquiring the lease of a derelict cocktail bar they totally remodelled the space and designed it with a laid-back Californian beach house vibe in mind. The team at Alexander Waterworth Interiors was the driving force who did a superb job with immaculate attention to detail.

I love the white-washed brick walls and rustic bar lined with bright yellow industrial bar stools that give an instant summer vibe. I could happily blog the day away at that bar and indulge in various pastries, coffees and salads whilst people watching.

The reclaimed floor boards, rustic table tops and pastel dipped chairs make the place feel warm and lived in and I’ve got a soft spot for those nostalgic orange paperback Penguin books that mix so perfectly with the eclectic pieces on display.

Now all we need is that Californian sunshine. Anna, keep a seat at the bar for me.

PLACES TO GO | ORCHARD KEEPERS AUSTRALIA

11 April 2014

Orchard-Keepers-Australia-via-Stylejuicer-03

Happy Friday peeps! It’s going to be a bit of a hectic day for me as I’m packing our suitcase. Yes, we’re off to see Oma in Germany and I am soooo looking forward to the break.

Lucky for us Oma (grandmother) lives in the most idyllic spot on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Germany and weather permitting we’ll have the grey city dust blown away in no time whilst playing on the beach and running around her vast garden looking for snails and other creepy crawlies.

So to get me in the holiday mood and to give you some eye-candy for the weekend I’m going to share another idyllic spot with you. Though this one is right on the other side of the planet with, ahem… slightly warmer weather, in southern Australia. Orchard Keepers is a home-from-home holiday rental and consists of a four bedroom house with a separate workers cottage providing accommodation for 10 people.

What struck me most about this place was the tasteful relaxed yet stylish and elegant interior which sits so well amongst the gentle rolling vineyards and orchards.

Inside chalk white walls and a calm colour palette of greys and browns dominate whilst personally sourced vintage furniture, lighting and artworks from across the globe add an eclectic feel. It’s a perfect backdrop to discover the unusual objects and details throughout the house. I’m a big fan of animal skulls and love the one above the vintage French armchair, a great spot for reading and watching the wildlife through the large patio doors. I know where I’d spend most of my time.

Orchard Keepers has a real personal feel to it as the owners also encourage guests to make full use of the kitchen gardens, even providing lists on what’s in season. And if you have a few kids in tow you’ll be pleased to hear that they’ve even got a playground. Heaven! Shame it’s on the other side of the planet – alas it’s off to the Baltic Sea we go and that too should be quite heavenly.

NOTE: I’ve scheduled a few posts for next week as I’m not sure how reliable Wifi is at Oma’s place but don’t fret you can follow our antics on Instagram and read about it here on the blog on my return. Tschuess… as they say in northern Germany.

PLACES TO GO | KUL RESTAURANT COPENHAGEN

27 February 2014

copyright-Kul-Copenhagen-via-Stylejuicer02

For non-Danish speakers including myself, ‘Kul’ actually means ‘coal’ referring to the fact that pretty much everything on the menu is cooked on… you guessed, coal. It is however also a very cool looking place and one that I must try out next time I’m in Copenhagen. Oh, how my bucket list is becoming longer by the day since I’ve started blogging.

A nice concept for a restaurant located in Copenhagen’s meat packing district and I like the dark, industrial interior linking in with the coal theme. Having had a look at the menu I can reassure you it’s not just a place for carnivores as you’ll also find some delicious seafood which I’m sure will have very few food miles.

If you get to go before I do, please give us a little review in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!

PLACES TO GO | FATHER RABBIT, AUCKLAND

12 February 2014

Auckland, Claudia Zinzan, Father Rabbit, General Store, New Zealand, Nick Hutchinson

I absolutely adore this General Store in Auckland, found via Si from French By Design.

Father Rabbit is the alter ego of interiors designer Claudia Zinzan and camera operator Nick Hutchinson and their carefully curated picks of products are practical and pleasing in both form and function with an underlying sense of quality and timelessness. “Father Rabbit appreciates simplicity.” You can imagine how these words made my heart sing. Yes!

Not only is the shop design and their products totally to my taste but I had a real chuckle reading about who Father Rabbit and the team behind him is. A fabulous write-up on their website had me in stitches as they might as well have written about ME!

Here’s a little excerpt

“Father Rabbit is not about grand gestures, but elevating those mundane everyday tasks. Embracing the simple pleasure of a well made bed (with ironed pillowcases) and completing a bathroom clean with fresh cut flowers. His heart sings with the freedom of organisation. Books in line, cans facing out, drawers tidy, garden weeded, tools away. Ticking each job off. Finishing one, before starting the next. Those simple little things – individually they aren’t life changing, but the culmination of them together make your home at once a well presented, thoughtfully considered and pleasing place to be.”

But make sure you pop over to Father Rabbit to read the rest. It’s genius!

Bristol-based Cereal Magazine are seriously taking over the world with their newly launched online travel guides, called Guided By Cereal. An annual subscription fee of £20 gives you full access to all travel guides as well as a Guided Travel Journal where outtakes and notes on each location are shared.

Currently there are 10 cities around the world including faves as London, Paris, Manhattan, LA and Hong Kong but also less common destinations like Charleston, Austin, Seoul, Vancouver and Bath (note for non-UK residents: Bath is a beautiful town in the west of England, slightly off the beaten track). I love the fact that each city has a local Cereal ambassador to ensure that everything is up to date and the recommended places keep up the good work.

The holistic approach that complements the magazine beautifully and the concept reminds me of Wallpaper* Magazine and their pocket sized travel guides. Nevertheless it’s a genius idea to give their design-hungry and individuality-craving niche market the insiders guide on where to stay, where to eat, what to see and where to shop. All with the Cereal seal of approval, vouching for their unique, understated, minimalist aesthetic, style and taste.

To get us all hooked they’ve given us access to the London travel guide and as a London-dweller and Cereal evangelist I’ve got to hand it to them: It’s an exquisite selection and I’ll soon report back on some of their recommendations.
