For me one of the best things about blogging is to discover and experience new ‘stuff’. Wether it is connecting with people and fellow bloggers who share the same aesthetics, being introduced to new brands, makers and designers or – as in this instance – a furniture shop in Crystal Palace, South London

Maybe the stars aligned or maybe it was sheer coincidence but a few Sunday’s ago Do South shop brought together a bunch of lifestyle bloggers, stylists and one very talented interiors photographer to document a styling challenge in one of the most inspiring places I’ve recently visited.

Do South is an interior shop with a difference and a hip edge that sells a mix of classic Danish designer furniture, one-off vintage finds and some ethnic pieces from Africa through to Australia. I call it modern rustic and it’s bang on trend for me as you can see from previous interiors I’ve featured on here and here and here.

Freddie Oke is the owner of Do South which he opened in 2011 after returning from living in Australia. With a background in music he is an artist at heart and takes the process of selecting pieces for the shop very seriously. Obsessed by detail, material, shape and colour I was delighted to talk to him as we share the same passion for craftsmanship and aesthetics.

Me and fellow blogging buddies Tiffany Grant-Riley from Curate & Display, Sarah-Louise Kilmer from LapinBlu and Cate St Hill from Catesthill meet Freddie over a casual breakfast at the shop before we’re let loose, each in their own distinct corner for a little styling challenge.

I can’t wait to get going and initially find it hard to narrow down my choice as I love almost everything in the shop. Slowly my vintage French workbench styling comes together reflecting the essence of Do South with an eclectic mix of amber glass glassware, a copper candle holder and mustard cushion by Hay and some amazing vintage leather football boots, embossed with Johnny Hancocks name who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

I think I’m speaking for my fellow bloggers when I say that this was pure joy to spend a few hours styling with such a great selection of furniture, lighting and decor as you can see in our results below, all beautifully captured by Kristy Noble.

A CHRISTMAS WEEKEND IN BATH

19 December 2014

christmas, weekend, bath, markets, ski chalet, mulled wine, independent shops, bars, cafes, great chalfield manor, national trust, food festival, carols, great hall, downton abbey, stags heads, style, english, quintessential, way of life, 21st century, instagram

Oh, how I enjoyed my much needed girlie break last weekend in Bath to visit one of my besties. It is the perfect place to get into the Christmas spirit and our trip has by now become somewhat of a tradition, along with plenty of shopping, mulled wine, good food and general tomfoolery.

The mostly Georgian architecture is stunning and there’s a great array of independent shops, bars and cafes – though if you ask the locals it’s getting way too ‘chainy’ in the last couple of years. The main attraction this time of year is the Christmas market and the ever expanding ‘chalet’ which puts you straight into apres ski mood. If you don’t care for glitz, flashing lights and Christmas tat Bath is (still) the place to go.

We were lucky that Saturday was a proper winters day; freezing but gloriously sunny and perfect for a walk in the countryside. We visited a local food festival at Great Chalfield Manor and had a bit of a Downton Abbey experience in the Great Hall with champagne, carol singers, a roaring fire and lots of stag heads lined up on the wall. Interesting how this quintessential English way of life just carries on into the 21st century.

If you enjoy my snaps from the weekend you can always follow along on Instagram.

PLACES TO GO | ONDER DE LEIDINGSTRAAT

19 November 2014

Onder de Leidingstraat, Strijp-S, Eindhoven, netherlands, deli, cafe, organic, healthy, food, lunch, coffee, interior design, industrial, style, trend, rough, concrete, polished, diy, quirky, neon, yellow, colour pop, styling, renee arns

Oh, how I love the internet, my window to the world that let’s me discover beautiful new and exciting places like Onder de Leidingstraat, a deli and cafe in the hip Strijp-S district of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Today’s shots of this cool as well as inviting space have been taken by the talented Renee Arns who lives locally.

Onder de Leidingstraat serves healthy salads, pasta, sandwiches, soups, cakes and coffees made with fresh seasonal and mostly organic ingredients. You can take-away or eat in and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. It’s a contemporary space with exposed pipes, rough plaster walls, simple furniture and gorgeous industrial pendant lamps. I especially like the quirky DIYs like the black barrels and coffee table made out of wooden palettes. Some neon yellow pops of colour lift the atmosphere and I bet there’s a cool background track playing.

So next time you’re in Eindhoven make sure to pop in and enjoy one of their home-made goodies.

HOTEL WIESERGUT | CONTEMPORARY AUSTRIAN

I haven’t been in the mountains, let alone the Alps, for like… ever so today I’m indulging myself and you with the beautiful photography by Mario Webhofer of Hotel Wiesergut in the wonderful ski resort of Saalbach Hinterglem, Austria.

Situated right on the slopes this is my idea of alpine luxury accommodation exuding warmth and comfort, style and elegance. I adore their muted colour palette and natural textures with floor-to-ceiling windows giving you an uninterrupted view of the mountains and immersing you in the landscape.

The interior design is contemporary Austrian with a strong Scandi flavour of simple and clean lines letting the textures, materials and bespoke furnishing do the talking. Rustic elements like the contemporary fire places, stone brick walls and tree trunk slices serving as side tables bring a relaxed atmosphere appropriate for guest returning from outdoor adventures.

Designed by Gogl Architekten the goal was to upgrade the existing traditional structure with puristic architecture. Monika Gogl therefore worked very consciously with contrasting materials such as local wood, natural stone, granite, glass and exposed concrete putting nature at its centre.

The Wiesergut is also very proud of their local produce and vegetable garden which their chefs use in new and innovative ways. A spa and indoor pool round off the luxury experience and you’d seriously have to drag me out of there kicking and screaming… *heaven*

COOL STUFF | BERLIN WALL LIGHT INSTALLATION

24 October 2014

berlin, wall, 25 years, fall of the wall, divide, east, west, lichtgrenze, border of light, balloons, light, installation, balloon patrons, commemoration, celebration, christopher bauder, marc bauder, filmmaker, light artist, 48 hours, biodegradable

I’m not from Berlin and for a long time during my adolescence the city was a tricky place to get to. I remember seemingly never-ending car journeys on a bumpy motorway with nothing but fields to look at and old-fashioned garages selling dodgy food. And then it happened: The Wall came down. Just like that. David Hasselhoff danced on the debris and sang ‘Looking for freedom’ and we were one united Germany.

To commemorate 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall light artist and designer Christopher Bauder and his filmmaker brother Marc came up with a simple, beautiful, profound and spectacular concept. For 48hrs the Berlin Wall will be brought back to life, dividing the city with an installation of illuminated 11-foot-high white balloons along the original path of the Wall. Just reading about it gives me goose bumps and I wish I could be there.

The ‘Lichtgrenze’ – the border of light – will go up over night, just like the original wall that was first constructed out of barbed wire before being replaced with concrete slabs. It’ll be up for two days and nights from the 7th till the 9th of November spanning nearly 10 miles. The 8,000 24 inch biodegradable white balls will once again divide the city into East and West and the event will culminate and mark the fall of the Wall at 7pm on the 9th of November with balloon patrons attaching personal messages and releasing the helium filled balls into the night sky.

There will be cinematic collages on large video screens at six key locations along the path showing historical footage of the divided Berlin and the city as we know it today as well as personal anecdotes and stories of the Wall every 500 feet to celebrate and commemorate.

What a wonderful concept!
