A UNIQUE VIBE AT KOOK RESTAURANT IN ROME

19 September 2013

If I owned a restaurant I would probably serve Italian food and it would look pretty darn close to Kook. Thanks to my tumblr feed I stumbled across this little gem and gave it a great big thumbs-up-Facebook like.

This Osteria & Pizzeria in Lazio, Rome serves traditional Italian food in an original setting and was designed by Noses Architects. It’s main feature is an iconic glass-encased Mediterranean olive tree sitting centrally in the dining area.

I love the use of industrial materials like board formed concrete, steel and metal and how they contrast against the softer woods and colourful traditional tiles in the bar area. As a designer and typography nut I get excited when seeing different sections like ‘cucina’ & ‘bar’ set in concrete and they didn’t even shy away from writing a whole quote in the bar area. Bet they proof read that a few times!

The furniture looks cobbled together consisting of apparent flee market finds set against bright white walls and quirky details like old racing bikes, filing cabinets and a fifties style black telephone. Pipes are exposed and there’s a no-frills feel to the bathrooms.

A unique vibe and a must visit for any Rome-lover.

NAM NAM RESTAURANT – NAMED AFTER PETER SELLER’S CULT MOVIE ‘THE PARTY’

29 August 2013

Restaurant Nam Nam in central Copenhagen neatly brings together this week’s theme of Asian and Western fusion – see Superfussy and Small Spaces. This post ticks more than one category box from the stunning interior design by studio Holmbäck Nordentoft and Christina Meyer Bengtsson to the delicious Asian fusion kitchen featuring mouth-watering ingredients and authentic dishes cooked in aromatic spice mixes directly imported from the owners’ sisters in Malaysia.

I wish I lived in Copenhagen and could just pop in to sample their dishes which are based on the Singaporean expression ‘Makan Kaki’ meaning ‘to eat’ – a call to friends and family to get together and enjoy a meal where each guest orders a dish they then share with the table. A beautiful and sociable way of eating and a clever way of teaching children from a young age to share. [Can you tell ‘learning to share’ is a prominent theme in our house at the moment!?]

To make your mouth water let me just tease you with some of their ingredients ranging from coconut milk, kaffir lime leaves, laksa leaves, tofu, galangal, chili, turmeric and tamarind to a long list of very specific and aromatic spice pastes, known as sambals. Nam Nam serves Peranakan classics such as Laksa, Poh Pia and Beef Rendang as well as Singapore street kitchen highlights like Roti Prata, Chilli Crabs, Fish Head Curry and Gado-gado.

I could happily spend an evening in their beautifully designed surroundings created by Holmbäck Nordentoft in collaboration with graphic designer Christina Meyer Bengtsson. The interior is casual with the emphasis on being sociable and enjoying a meal together with friends. The colour palette is bright and bold with a rustic material mix of untreated wood and authentic finds from Asia. I particularly like the wooden crates serving as shelving for intriguing Singaporean flee-market finds like old photographs, paper lanterns and tin pots and mugs. The large ball pendant lamps with their woven texture add a focal point and the open kitchen reassures the customer that all dishes are freshly prepared.

Finally, a funny fact about Nam Nam which gets its name from the 1968 cult movie ‘The Party’, in which Peter Sellers plays the main character and during the party feeds a parrot, and with a bold Indian accent says: ‘Birdie namnam’. Who would have thought, eh!?

POD – A BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN CAPE TOWN

15 August 2013

Camps Bay, Cape Town, is renowned for its white sandy beaches fringed by palm trees and has a trendy nightlife. All attributes that make my ears prick up.

When I saw (!) and read about the luxurious POD boutique hotel I fell in love and spent far too long drooling over the photos and dreaming of a romantic holiday with my Schatzi… *sigh* one day we’ll get there, baby.

In the meantime let me introduce this discreet and super stylish abode to you. Designed by Greg Wright Architects POD offers breathtaking views of the deep blue Atlantic ocean as well as the 12 Apostles Mountain Range and sits right across from the famous Camps Bay beach. I love the unique use of tactile materials like granite, slate, African timber and glass which create an elegant simplicity. Judging from the photos (sadly, I did not get a free invitation) the rooms and suites provide ultimate comfort and evoke a feeling of sanctuary and serene relaxation baked up by discreet and luxurious service.

As if you need more assurance of POD’s pedigree, Condé Nast Traveler says:

… it delivers design with a big D; but it’s terribly relaxed too, breezy even, which is probably why it appeals to an international, design-savvy crowd that likes to fly a little below the radar.

Well, I think that’s just me through and through… ok, at least my imaginary self.

I spotted this colourful photo of a local woman dancing the rumba on Pinterest (where else!?) and came across this series of travel photos by Tai Power Seeff.

I’m always excited when great travel photography and writing come together as is the case in this article on Cuba and Trinidad. Tracy Young’s writing talent equals that of her photographing companion and her account of taking her eclectic ‘clan’ (‘a loose collective of family and old friends’ read seven people!) is hilarious as well as informative.

What struck me most of her account was how lost in time both Havana and Trinidad are and I wonder how much longer this is going to be the case. Another ‘must’ for me on the list of places to go and see.

Now, get yourself a cup of coffee and get stuck into Tracy’s article with Tai’s photography as a virtual cookie on the side.

PLACES TO GO | LONDON’S MONOCLE CAFE

28 June 2013

Monocle Cafe London via Stylejuicer

Monocle Magazine is a favourite of most designers and now all the luvies can go the whole hog and engulf themselves in the complete Monocle experience enjoying their espressos at the newly openend Monocle cafe in London. And it really IS an experience! There are back issues and preferred titles to browse, live broadcasting on Monocle 24 and the downstairs area is available for subscribers to hire for client gatherings and team pow-wows complete with an installed short throw projector.

If that isn’t enough to lure you in for a coffee they prize themselves on their fresh and healthy food and only best quality coffee from New Zealand’s Allpress. On their website they proudly list their suppliers for everything from joinery, tables, stools, cutlery, glassware and aprons. They are clearly proud of their new venture and not afraid to shout about it.

So, I’m popping in next time I’m in town and will let you know if their service really is smart with a smile and a wink.

It sure looks promising!
