LET ME TAKE YOU TO THE BEACH

2 August 2013

Dear readers, it’s Friday so let’s have some fun and let me take you on a virtual holiday to the beach! I know a lot of you will be sweating it out at your desk but I hope that looking through my beach mood board will trigger some lovely memories and bring a smile to your face. The mind is a powerful thing and I’m going to attempt to take you to the beach in my best soft and soothing hypnotic voice. Ready!? Breathe deeply and close your eyes. Err, no don’t close your eyes as you won’t be able to see my lovely beach mood board.

Ok, let’s start again. Maybe if you close your eyes for a teeny tiny minute or so (without your boss noticing) you’ll be able to smell the salty air, hear the seagulls, feel the sand between your toes, the sun on your face and the breeze tangling up your hair. [Wait, it gets better!] Now, dive into the lapping waves, sharp intake of breath because it’s so frigging cold and splash around until you’re refreshed. [Crescendo coming up] Let the waves carry you back to shore where you dodge the jellyfish and see weed, dry yourself off with a fluffy towel and sit down to drink some cool [make that ‘lukewarm’] lemonade.

Didn’t work!? Ok, I might need some more practice but in the meantime let me leave you with a quote from my virtual twitter friend Alex Andreou:

There’s a part of our soul that only the sun can gladden.

And this, my dear readers, I believe to be true! No sarcasm.

THE ART OF PACKING BY LOUIS VUITTON

31 July 2013

Are you relaxed and ready for a master class in packing? I’m not kidding there IS an art to it and Louis Vuitton, creator of some of the world’s most luxurious travel goods since 1854, is letting you in to a few secrets.

So let me set the scene: Enter through some effortlessly gliding doors into a world of low lighting with thick carpet and cream and chocolate brown logo overload, gold hardware and tactile fabrics everywhere. The smell of leather wafts through the air (no cheap ployester anywhere) and a nice and discreet assistant sits you down for your master class in packing. Ok, I might have exaggerated a bit but that’s the experience you’re (almost) getting when watching their very helpful packing instructions online. I must say it’s a beautiful piece of flash animation and it’s well worth the wait once it’s loaded.

Now you might detect some sarcasm here but let me reassure you, it’s pure envy that I don’t have a wardrobe or luggage to replicate the experience at home. On second thoughts if I DID own some LV cases I’d probably have somebody else packing. Hmmm…

Mainly, I just LOVE these beautifully styled shots of luggage and garments.

Louis Vuitton The Art Of Packing

For all those who want to cut to the chase here are some of their top packing tips:

BASE LAYER:

Put clunky items like shoes, cosmetics (make sure you put liquids in extra plastic bags) and hairdryer at the bottom of the case as a base layer.

MIND THE GAPS:

Roll up all your thinner non-creasing garments like t-shirts and knitwear. Roll from the collar down and use to fill the gaps between the chunky items at the bottom. Fold jeans in half lengthways and roll up from the bottom to the top to avoid unnecessary creasing.

PIECE DE RESISTENCE:

Shirts, jackets and skirts are tricky to fold but try and use as few folds as possible and keep to the shape of the case. Do up the shirt or jacket, turn out the collar and fold back the arms.

BEFORE YOU CLOSE UP:

There’s usually a bit of room under the lid so try and put your most awkwardly shaped items in to the suitcase last to minimise the risk of creasing.

Et voilà, bon voyage!

GUY-CANDY: SCORCHING HOT BEACHWEAR FOR MEN FROM H&M

8 July 2013

Since the heat wave in the UK shows no signs of abating I am going to freshen you all up with some ice-cool shots of… well, hot guys in cool beachwear. Take note, all very pin-able!

Everybody knows that H&M have got their price point right but they sure got their beachwear for men spot on this summer. From boardshorts and swim briefs to city suits with shorts their collection is fresh as a watermelon in terms of colour, pattern and cut.

Daniel Craig paved the way for tighter swim briefs which have become popular with guys that want to show off their hard work in the gym and dedication to healthy diets. Board shorts are also huge this summer and with a slimmer fit are not just a prerogative for the under 25s! Note Matthew McConaughey and Hugh Jackman are fans of the board short and they are both 40+ (hot) dads. Ok, they’re also insanely good looking, talented and rich BUT the point remains it’s your body shape and not the age that defines what suits you on the beach.

I totally dig the linen style summer suit with shorts look and I’m hoping this heat wave will bring out some brave and stylish dressing amongst British men. Be sure you give them an encouraging nod when you see one!

LET’S PICNIC!

5 July 2013

My goodness, could it really be true and we are about to experience a small heatwave in the UK? I’ve excitedly checked numerous weather sites, painted my toe nails and bought some sunscreen. Roll on summer!

So, weather forecast is sorted, Andy Murray is in another Wimbledon semi-final today (yes I’m a fan and to prove it check out my Wimbledon fashion post) what better time to celebrate summer vibes with a picnic. Ok, most of you are probably on your way to work or sitting at your desk and the closest you’ll get to a picnic today is a quick half an hour lunch break with a stale sandwich, sitting on a hanky trying not to get your bottom too dirty on a small spec of greenery surrounded by half the world’s working population not to mention the busses, cars and fumes.

Even more reason to indulge in a bit of day dreaming with today’s picnic mood board. From large and styled outdoor get togethers with friends and family to beach barbecues and spontaneous ‘let’s cycle somewhere with wine, cheese and bread in a basket’ adventures. If you’re planning a picnic, this weekend is your chance! And if you live anywhere in northern Europe you know that these chances don’t come around that often. So, shake out your picnic rug, pack some delicious nibbles and indulge in a bit of adventure and treat yourself.

I truly believe that time spent outdoors is good for the soul – a win-win situation. Let’s hope that goes for Andy too!

WHISTLES – THE THINKING WOMAN’S FASHION BRAND

3 July 2013

Well, wouldn’t we all like to call ourselves the ‘thinking woman’!?

It’s a fitting description for the English fashion brand Whistles where Jane Shepherdson, former Brand Director at Topshop, has been the Chief Executive and figurehead since 2008.

On the website she describes the Whistles aesthetic as an effortless way of dressing, unique, easy and laid back, but also luxurious. When she thinks about the Whistles woman she references Sofia Coppola who is creative, intelligent, stylish, very understated and confident. In other words a ‘pretty cool woman’!

Jane loves fashion and the ever changing nature of it, the way that trends develop and grow and that nothing is certain. Fashion is the thing that gets her up in the morning – interpreting trends and creating something unique is what she loves to do.

Below are some images from the Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook and you can judge for yourself if Jane and her team have achieved what they set out to do: create pieces that stand up on their own and have a timeless quality.

I for one won’t argue with her.
