PEOPLE TO WATCH | BRUUM KNITS, ARTISAN KNITWEAR

27 November 2013

One of the reasons I started Stylejuicer was to be able to promote exceptional niche brands, products and services that find it hard to get traction in this ever increasingly competitive global market. Bruum Knits is just such a brand.

A hip artisan knitwear company from Barcelona created by Magda and Paula who met at Fashion College a few years ago. Both have proper daytime jobs but still find the time to produce the most gorgeous knitwear from home which they sell in their online store.

I was stunned to hear that the two of them create every piece by hand and currently don’t employ any other knitters. Their passion is palpable and they say that each piece has a part of them. Seeing the product I can believe that!

I remember my grandmother knitting me sweaters for winter when I was small and though she was a fast worker it still took ages to complete and the snowdrops started to come out when I could finally wear it. God only knows how Magda and Paula manage but their product is fabulous and bang on trend this winter with their chunky bobble hats, beanies and snoods. They only use high quality natural yarns of different compositions like wool, merino wool and alpaca and their beautiful mostly muted colour palette should match any wardrobe.

Being curious by nature I couldn’t resist to find out more about their brand and product and I hope you’ll enjoy the interview below.

Remember it’s only 4 1/2 weeks till Christmas. Check out their online store and yes, they do ship to Europe and the Rest Of The World.

WHERE DOES THE NAME BRUUM COME FROM?

It’s a funny story. When we were trying to decide the name of our brand we had so many ideas but none of them was the good one, so we were joking saying that any name could be the one, and while we were talking about that we saw a drawing of a motorbike in Magda’s notebook and said “We could even call us Bruum Knits!!” (by the sound of a motorcycle)…. And we actually liked it and decided to be Bruum Knits.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS LIMITED EDITIONS?

We have some unique items, that are one of a kind, and there are small quantities of all the other products. We’ve also done personalized products: with embroidered names, changing colours of the original models in the collection, or even doing some models in children’s sizes. We’re open to requests of product personalization and entirely made-to-order products. 🙂

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR WOOL FROM?

Most of the yarns we use are bought through a supplier in England, mostly from a Norwegian brand that uses wool from Norwegian and Faeroe Island sheep, as well as Merino wool from Australia and Italy, and Alpaca yarns from South America. We also buy yarns from small local shops, and local artisan producers, and this season we’ve also tried a yarn from an Italian well-known supplier.

DO YOU RUN YOUR BUSINESS FROM HOME OR DO YOU HAVE A STUDIO?

We run the brand from our homes. Each of us designs and knits at home, and we meet every week to take decisions and show each other what we thought and what we made.

WHO CREATES THE DESIGNS?

We both design. Each of us designs her own pieces, taking into account some common characteristics we had first decided. Most ideas come from the yarn: we buy yarns we love, we knit swatches and we find the best design for each yarn, so we knit them and we show each other the results.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN SAY TWO YEARS TIME?

We would like to grow as a brand, getting more clients around the world, expanding products so there are more sweaters, cardigans and other bigger pieces. We would also like to have some retailers.

ENGLISH COUNTRY LIVING MOODBOARD

19 November 2013

It’s a lovely sunny cold and crisp autumn day in London and I’m wearing a cozy grey polo neck sweater, hugging my morning tea and think I might even make myself a hot water bottle for my feet. Brrr… is it cold where you are?

These autumnal days always make me want to go for long country walks in wellies, woolly coat and with a huge scarf I can pull up to my ears. Getting ever so slightly lost on the way and usually stuck in the mud or having my jeans ripped when climbing a fence.

Somehow having the cobwebs blown away and battling the elements makes me feel that I’ve earned my seat next to the roaring fire as well as my second helping to some decadently rich pudding. On a day like today, english country living can be very rewarding and make you feel utterly wholesome – rosy cheeks and halo included.

After this preamble I feel the need for a mood board to give my humble writing some context and to bring autumnal living in the gorgeous english countryside to life.

All to be enjoyed with the customary Stylejuicer cup of tea.

TOAST MENSWEAR IS NOURISHING YOU THIS AUTUMN WINTER

14 November 2013

A double helping of Toast this week on Stylejuicer and it’s menswear’s turn today.

Food is hip, right!? Jamie Oliver’s passion has resonated with the most listless person and by now we all get it: We are what we eat!

Nutrition is important and has become a conversation point along with house prices and choice of schools. We read more cook books than ever and cooking shows like The Great British Bake Off are no longer a guilty pleasure but something to be watched with friends and celebrated. We care about food miles and strive to buy local produce, ideally organic or fair trade and enjoy our Saturday mornings at farmers markets.

Going out to dinner has never been this exciting with new places opening up every week and an endless choice from swanky Michelin star to authentic seasonal cuisine to rustic pub food and organic cafes. We are obsessed with food and we love it!

TOAST-Mens-AW2013-via-Stylejuicer02

What a great angle therefore for a fashion brand who are equally enthusiastic about their garments to associate the two – which is exactly what Toast has done with their menswear AW2013 collection. The chosen twelve models are not professional models at all but people like you and me photographed by the marvellous Neil Gavin and styled by David Lamb.

Not exactly a new idea you might say, but they are also UK-based and involved with food in one way or another. They are not just achingly cool but passionate about their work and each individual story gives the collection an added sense of credibility and authenticity.

I love the fact that Toast has chosen to include women in their menswear catalogue which works surprisingly well as you’re absorbed by the individual stories and don’t even notice this oddity.

Enjoy and support these incredibly hard working individuals below representing the classic and stylish collection in a simple and unpretentious way. Authenticity rocks right now!

TOAST UK – AW2013 LOOK BOOK INSPIRED BY THE WILD WEST

12 November 2013

A warm hello dear readers on this rather damp autumn morning! I’m hoping to cheer you up with some snippets of UK fashion brand Toast’s AW collection.

The photography by Nick Seaton is beautifully stimulating, taken in the Wild West and North American Prairie. A gorgeous backdrop with cowboys, horses, log cabins, stables and stunning scenery for the mostly soft colour palette, fine fabrics and classic patterns.

Toast is your ultimate lifestyle brand covering Womens and Menswear as well as House & Home including lotions, potions, candles, cookware and even storage to name but a few. Basically, you can live and breathe Toast… though I’d advise against eating too much of it.

They also did a clever thing on their website where you can click on the juicy lifestyle image and up pops “click to shop the look” which means that you can look just like the model in the picture! Perfect!

Note: The photo series reminds me a little of the Dude Ranch by Vanessa Jackman featured earlier this year. If you have a yearning for all things Wild West have a browse for some more inspirational photography.

SUPPORTING ALL MO BROS

4 November 2013

It’s one of my favourite months! The month formerly known as November. Yes, MOVEMBER is upon us and Stylejuicer is supporting all Mo Bros in their efforts to grow the finest, thickest and shiniest moustache known to men.

As an enthusiastic Mo Sista and living with three ‘men’ (ok, two of which aren’t yet at moustache growing age)
I wanted to get involved and help change the face of Men’s Health one moustache at a time! So here’s a little Movember badge designed by my good self for you to download, share and post online. Help spread the Movember love!

Movember Badge copyright stylejuicer.com

For all those not familiar with Generation Mo, here is a bit of background info:

Movember, the month formerly known as November, is when men around the world grow a moustache for 30 days, with the support of the women in their lives, to raise awareness and funds for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health.

Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 with a few friends who wanted to bring back a past fashion trend – the moustache. That year, 30 guys participated but no money was raised. In 2004, amazed by the fun they had and the conversations that were sparked, four of the 30 original members came together to make their Mo-growing an annual, official charitable endeavor by adding an important cause – prostate cancer. That year, 450 participants raised $43,000 AUD for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Now in 2013, there are official Movember campaigns in 21 countries and in 2012 over £92 million was raised globally. To get involved and sign up visit Movember.com

The concept totally appeals to my sense of humour and I’m changing my profile picture on my social media sites for the month of Movember to show support as well as posting regular updates on the Movember phenomenon.

Follow along on Facebook and Twitter and why not join in the fun by registering at movember.com.
