SEASHORE LIBRARY BY VECTOR ARCHITECTS

29 March 2016

seashore library, vector architects, china, concrete, board-lines framework, grain texture, public library, meditation space, vistas, stimulate, calm the mind, slow living, style, trend, austerity

I’ve just about come down from the sugar rush during the Easter break and in search of some austerity I came across the Seashore Library by Vector Architects in China.

The monumental concrete structure on a beautiful sandy beach has been cast on-site over a board-lined formwork, leaving behind a wood grain texture, reminiscent of the marks the waves leave behind on the sand.

I was intrigued to find out that it’s a public library as the views from each of the different spaces are simply stunning and I wonder how much reading or research can be achieved when tempted with such an extraordinary scene outside.

The two level building is cleverly divided and even hosts a meditation space at the top with dim lighting to invite contemplation and slim openings that fill the space with the ocean’s sound but don’t distract with large vistas.

I can’t imagine a more peaceful place to calm as well as stimulate your mind.

Namaste!

HOUSE MAHER BY TRIBE STUDIO

21 March 2016

architecture, tribe studio, house maher, playful study, volume, light, contrasting brick, smooth plaster, offset ceiling, wow factor, pitched gable, double height, ceiling, style, trend

I’m a bit obsessed by architecture at the moment – have been for years actually – and was fascinated when I came across House Maher by Tribe Studio.

This new build for a young family is set in suburban Willoughby, north of Sydney and Tribe Studio describe it eloquently as ‘a playful study in volume and light’.

The description is absolutely spot on when you study the photos more closely. I’m not only drawn to the contrasting brick and smooth plaster but in particular how clever the space has been divided up, keeping it open but still zoned.

I love the double height at the back of the house over the living / dining / cooking area and how the chandelier drops from the very top of the pitched roof through an opening in the ceiling. This offset second ceiling follows the pitched roof line and creates a narrow gallery used as a semi open workspace giving the interior it’s wow factor.

The more I study the photos the more details become apparent, eg the placement of the small window in the work gallery which echoes the large square window in the brick wall giving you views from the gallery into the garden and beyond.

I wish there were more photos and elevations form all sides as I can spot a double pitched gable which you can only see internally – all adding to House Maher’s playful character.

RESTORED MOUNTAIN RETREAT BY SCOTT AND SCOTT

15 February 2016

Restored, Mountain, Retreat, Canada, scott and scott, architects, vancouver, modern rustic, wood, plywood, concrete flooring, industrial, minimal, cabin, steel staircase, marble kitchen sink, trend, style, styling, interior design, decor

This restored mountain retreat has been brought into the 21st century by Scott & Scott Architects and ticks all my modern rustic boxes.

Lots of warm wood – from plywood wall dividers to old beams – is tamed by an industrial concrete floor and steel staircase as well as minimal white walls. The simple wooden furniture is covered in fluffy sheep skins and the inbuilt fireplace gives that warm cabin feeling. I love how the light floods through the open steel staircase from the first floor giving it real prominence and drama.

The most stunning feature has to be the kitchen sink though which has been carved out of one single chunky slab of marble. What a feat!

BLACK HOUSE BY CANNY ARCHITECTURE

8 February 2016

black house, canny architecture studio, est magazine, sophisticated, seductive, restful, relaxed, sleek, interior, decor, furniture, copper, lights, tiled chimney breast, exterior, interior design, style, farm house, barn door, juxtaposition, black cladding

I’m swooning over this contemporary take on a traditional farm house by award winning studio Canny Architecture discovered via Est Magazine.

I love the exposed roof structure on the inside giving the house such great height and drama. The sophisticated moody colour scheme of greys and whites sits in harmony with the black kitchen and mostly black furniture. The kitchen pendant lights give little copper accents and there’s some scrunchy brown leather seating in the boot room and games room but the showstopper is the tiled chimney breast around the fireplace which stands out in it’s glazed terracotta-esque glory. A restful interior design that is utterly seductive as well as wonderfully relaxed.

My favourite bit has to be the entrance with it’s heavy wooden double doors and cross construction hinting at an old barn. A great juxtaposition to the sleek architecture and black cladding.

GIPFELRESTAURANT BY HERZOG AND DE MEURON

3 February 2016

Gipfelrestaurant, Chäserrugg mountain, switzerland, Churfirsten Massif, architects Herzog and de Meuron, architecture, swiss alps, tourism, local craftsmanship, cuisine, communal dining, wood burning fire, terrace, destination

The Gipfelrestaurant with it’s breathtaking views of the seven peaks Churfirsten Massif in Switzerland sits on top of the Chäserrugg mountain and literally stopped me in my tracks. I want to go there – badly!

Star architects Herzog and de Meuron re-invented the original restaurant which was built back in 1972 when the cable car station was constructed. Making the most of the views across Lake Walensee and the surrounding peaks the building sits on a plateau at 2,262m above sea level in this unspoilt part of the Swiss Alps.

The goal was to increase tourism in the summer months and pay tribute to local tradition, craftsmanship and cuisine. Locally sourced spruce is therefore one of the dominant materials used, from the pre-fabricated frame by craftsmen in the valley to the floorboards and long angular roof it covers every surface and gives a lovely warm feel.

The Gipfelrestaurant is a destination place serving fresh local food and encouraging conversation through communal dining at long wooden tables before relaxing in front of one of the wood burning fires or the covered terrace enjoying the views.

I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place to enjoy the Swiss Alps – summer or winter.
