I was immediately intrigued when I spotted this property on Milk Decoration because of it’s container like look and corrugated iron cladding. But as it turns out this South African cabin just outside Cape Town is a functional weekend getaway built on a tight budget and the architects played around with folding sheets of paper throughout the initial study phase.
I like that all materials have a rough and unfinished look with a dedication to functionality. Interior walls are made of plywood, light fittings are deliberately displayed and there’s an outdoor shower with a customised tap constructed from bare pipes and a concrete barrel shaped washbasin.
No surprise the owners brief was to have just their basic human needs of sleeping, eating, relaxing and sitting around a fire met under one roof. It’s stripped back, mindful and ecological living to re-connect with nature and I bet there’s no wifi for the complete weekend detox experience.
