HOUSE 3 | BY COY AND YIONTIS

1 June 2015

House3-by-Coy_and-Yiontis-01

It’s the first of June and still far too cold out there. I even wore my winter coat on the playground yesterday as the wind was so cold. Not happy!

So, in the spirit of willing on warmer temperatures I’m going to share the amazing House 3 by Coy and Yiontis in Australia with you today. It’s essentially an extension to a Victorian townhouse in Balaclava, just outside Melbourne, accommodating the various needs of three generations living together.

The architects cleverly divided the house into two discreet buildings, old and new, with a central courtyard and a glazed passage that connects the two. Despite the communal areas seeming so generous the architects claim:

This is not a big house. Considered planning and the integration of indoor and outdoor achieve a generosity and variety of communal spaces for the family at odds with the actual size of the building. Private areas are restrained and humble. It is an urban home that functions successfully for a multi-generational family and its evolving needs.

I have to say I really like the wooden cladding and the angled shapes of the new extension with it’s vast windows that never compromise privacy. There is some clever integrated seating in the passageway perfect for lounging and relaxing and I love how you can get glimpses of the pool through a low window from the reading room in the old part. Neat little touches that elevate the design from good to great.

IKEA | CONSCIOUS LIVING

22 May 2015

ikea, ilse crawford, sinnerlig collection, unique, tactile, raw, sustainable, materials, brand leader, trend setter, apple, mass-production, renewable, natural materials, cork, bamboo, glass, celebrating imperfections, style, design, for the home, decor, furniture

IKEA has done it again! Captured the Zeitgeist and given us just what we crave right now: uniqueness, tactility and sustainability. All under the umbrella brand of CONSCIOUS LIVING.

The sign of a brand leader is to be able to read market trends and anticipate what people want just before it drops into their consciousness and IKEA, just as APPLE, is a master at sniffing out and mass-producing trends.

The upcoming Sinnerlig collection by designer Ilse Crawford consists of pieces that engage our senses and connect us to our homes. Working with renewable and natural material like cork, bamboo and glass she has created some wonderful tactile and functional furniture.

The collection also includes vases that are all given different treatments during production therefore each one has a unique look celebrating the imperfections that arise during the process.

I can’t wait for Sinnerlig to hit the shops in August.

PAPU | KIDS BRAND

15 May 2015

papu, kids corner, childrens clothing, brand, fashion, finnish, susanna vento, varpunen, blog, fresh, playful, fun, comfortable, design, design conscious parents, style, trend, stylist, mini gym

These gorgeous photos are via Susanna’s blog Varpunen and are part of a giveaway competition – sadly closed now. But I love the Finnish brand Papu with their hip graphics for kids and the way Susanna has styled the shots as a quick kids work-out in her mini-gym.

Fresh, playful, fun, comfortable and – most importantly – a look that’s pleasing for design conscious parents as well. What’s not to like!? Check out Papu’s range and see more on Susanna’s blog.

IN FRAGRANCE HEAVEN | LE LABO

7 April 2015

Le-Labo-London-via-Stylejuicer-01

So, here’s the thing… sometimes things pass me by. No, really! Even me! OCD-perfectionist-Supermami is not always on her game and stuff slips my mind. [insert sarcastic face]

Le Labo has to be on that list and I can only blame severe sleep deprivation and crying babies for this almost inexcusable oversight. You see Le Labo launched it’s London store in February 2010, just as I was up to my elbows in nappies and trying to figure out why my baby wouldn’t sleep – turns out he was just hungry, duh!

So, when I recently read an interview with co-founder Fabrice Penot in Cereal magazine it prompted me to pay the store a visit and oh my, what an experience it was. As mentioned I can get slightly OCD about certain things and the Le Labo conceptstore almost turned me into a fragrance fanatic.

The beautifully simple concept makes it easy for the lay(wo)man to find their way around Le Labo’s range of 14 scents. Firstly, you have to decide which of the 3 main fragrance groups – ranging from citrus to floral and musky – you feel most comfortable with. Then you can delve deeper into your chosen group and sniff 4-5 scents before finally choosing which size bottle you’d like to purchase (0.5, 1.7 or 3.4 FL OZ).

A bit of a warning at this point: they’re not cheap but the added benefit of the 2 larger bottles is that they can be refilled with a 20% discount. Only once you’ve chosen your desired product do they prepare the bottle in their lab [#gettit?] and add their retro functional label.

Oh, and did I mention that they have some scented candles for the home (Figue for me please) and body care products too!? All wonderfully designed and packaged in Le Labo signature industrial style – quite the opposite to the (mostly) over-the-top perfume packaging.

I absolutely adored the experience with a super relaxed and approachable assistant who was happy for me to try everything and snap away on my iPhone to my hearts content. She even gave me a sample of my favourite fragrance Santal 33 which I’m going to treasure until I can afford the real deal.

Luckily, my birthday is round the corner. [insert confetti face]

MONOCHROME FAMILY TOWNHOUSE IN COPENHAGEN

12 February 2015

vipp, scandinavian, design, form follows function, monochrome, light, airy, dark grey, kitchen, home, townhouse, home office, interior design, styling, trend, style, decor

Do you remember the Vipp shelter from last week? I’ve just discovered that some of my favourite lifestyle images on Pinterest all originate from this monochrome family townhouse in Copenhagen.

I found the place on Dwell and it turns out that the couple who live there with their four children both work for Vipp in a senior capacity. Hence the beautifully placed products around the house.

You know grey is my favourite colour but I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to paint my whole kitchen and dining area in this dark-ish shade. Let alone dark grey kitchen units. The couple say it is their most used room of the house and that it works particularly well for entertaining as the space feels cozy and cave like. A stark contrast to the rest of the house which feels light and airy.

It’s a very monochrome and minimalist space where each piece of furniture is a (future) design classic supporting the Scandinavian tradition of ‘form follows function’ as well as the use of organic and quality materials.

My favourite room of the house has to be the home office in the attic though. Oh, how I love that butterfly chair and the old black typewriter. What a gem!
