Do you like ginger? It’s a bit of a marmite vegetable I think. Love it or hate it kind of thing. I never used to be keen on the taste but since moving to London and immersing myself in all sorts of different flavours and cuisines I’ve grown to love it and wanted to share my ginger mix with you today. Can you think of any other associates that would sit well here? Happy Wednesday!

AIGLE FAMILY PORTRAITS BY LOUISE DESROSIERS

8 April 2014

Aigle-Family-Portraits-Louise-Desrosiers-via-Stylejuicer-01

This post is a wonderful combination of (almost) everything I’m inspired by: clever marketing, creativity, branding, photography, fashion and style.

Today’s beautiful photography is by Louise Desrosiers who’s shots of the Amsterdam Warehouse only featured here yesterday. Looking at her portfolio I came across the quintessential French Quality brand Aigle (yes, with a capital Q) and her inspiring shots of the Schmidt-Fioro family wearing – you guessed it – Aigle boots and clothing.

The shots appear in a casual blog-like section on their website and are part of a series called ‘Family Spirit’ that showcases aspirational, creative families and their projects, day-to-day habits and what makes them stand out from the crowd.

By no means a new strategy but somehow these inviting and intimate shots make me connect with their brand in ways I didn’t before and I’ve got a fuzzy feeling that I want to be part of this campaign and maybe the easiest way would be to buy some of their clothes!? Gotcha! Or whatever the French would say instead.

A smart angle by Aigle (see what I did there) and though they haven’t managed to convince me to buy any of their product I do enjoy the reportage feel of the campaign and the voyeur in me wants to see who’s life I can pry into next. I’ll be checking back regularly et voilà… an impulse buy might, just might happen.

Clever the French, aren’t they!?

INTERIORS CRUSH | AMSTERDAM WAREHOUSE

7 April 2014

Amsterdam-Warehouse-via-Milk-Magazine-08

Hello to you! Did you all have a nice weekend? It seems ages that I shared an Interiors Crush with you so today’s feature is extra special. There are of course many, many gorgeous lofts out there – remember the London loft or the one in Barcelona I recently featured?

Hold on to your hats as today’s original Amsterdam warehouse is particularly impressive with it’s boho industrial vibe beautifully captured by Louise Desrosiers.

The space centres around an unusual enclosed patio garden from which light filters into the rest of the house through huge industrial style windows. A ginormous exposed brick wall sets the tone for the mix-and-match interior with antiques and flea market finds giving a relaxed atmosphere.

The colour palette is all earthy with emphasis on natural textures like rough, old wood, animal hides and weathered metal. Interestingly, there are no pops of colour, hardly any painted surfaces and no bling to speak of with the only concession being the polished concrete floor. A totally harmonious space, befitting of the arty Jordaan neighbourhood where Rembrandt spent the last few years of his life.

I’m rather envious of the owners work/life set up as interior designer Marius runs his business Flow from one side of the building while wife Emily designs beautiful organic kids clothes for Gray Label in her studio on the other side. I imagine they romantically meet for lunch on the patio or in the open-plan kitchen under the impressive black clay chandelier, handmade in Africa, to share a spot of organic goodies. *Sigh*

I bet the kids are having a ball in this space chasing each other, bike racing and hiding in their tipee.

& OTHER STORIES SS14

4 April 2014

&-Other-Stories-6

How about some fashion on Friday? & Other Stories has been around for a good year now and I’m still in love with the concept.

‘This brand is for women interested in fashion who want to develop a personal style, a total look – their own story.’ Samuel Fernström – Head of & Other Stories

Sam, you’ve twisted my rubber arm! I’ve been following their tumblr-feel homepage with interest and love how they regularly add new fashion narratives. A super smart way to sell a lifestyle and feed the need for personal expression.

This Spring I’ve fallen head over heels with their adorable floral shots. If you look at my Instagram feed I think I’ve got a flower addiction or maybe this grey and rainy English winter has gotten the better of me.

On another note, as I’m getting older I enjoy seeing older and more mature models used in advertising and fashion in particular. I know I’m stating the obvious but with the rise of living expectation it’s essential for brands to speak and cater to a wide age range and I love that they feature designs to suit all ages, be it classic pieces or trend wear (I’m not even sure that’s a word but it is in my universe).

I read that & Other Stories should be seen as the cooler younger sister of the successful COS brand which is another favourite so I hope that doesn’t make me the boring older sister.

FOOD HEAVEN | COCONUT CARDAMOM LIME TEA CAKE

3 April 2014

coconut, cardamom, lime, tea cake, Laura Davidson, dessert, recipes, low-fat, Blogging Over Thyme

OMG, you guys, I saw this popping up in my Pinterest feed via Laura Davidson over at Blogging Over Thyme and just had to share this. Just the list of the three main ingredients gets my heart and taste buds going and she had me at ‘cardamom’.

Coconut, cardamom and lime is a genius combination if you ask me and judging by Laura’s tempting photography the texture is soft and light with some exciting floral undertones from the cardamom. Though I’ll just have to take her word for that as I haven’t had time to test it out yet but I promise you it’ll be my next baking challenge. The cowboy loves his limes as well as cake and I’m sure this will be a hit with the kids as well.

Before you head over to check out her other gorgeous recipes let me just mention that this is slightly adapted from Dorie Greenspan who’s also been featured on Stylejuicer with her funky branding for NYC Beurre & Sel cookie shop.

COCONUT CARDAMOM LIME TEA CAKE

Prep time // 15 min
Cook time // 60 min

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup canned unsweetened (full-fat) coconut milk
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
2 cups sugar
zest of 2 limes
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons dark or light rum
3/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (or flakes – see recipe below)

Lime Glaze:
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
3/4 cup powdered sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons heavy cream
unsweetened coconut flakes, toasted or un-toasted (for garnish)

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 C). Generously butter or grease a 9- to 10-inch bundt or Kugelhopf pan.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cardamom and salt. Set aside. Combine the coconut milk and butter in a small saucepan and place over medium low heat. Whisk until the butter melts completely. Remove from heat, but keep mixture warm.
Combine the sugar and lime zest in the bowl of a stand mixer. Using your fingers, rub the zest and sugar together until fragrant. Add the (room temperature) eggs to the bowl. Using the whisk attachment, beat the sugar and eggs together until pale and thick (roughly 3-4 min). Then, beat in the vanilla and rum.

Over low speed, slowly add the flour mixture until just combined. Scrape down the bowl with a spatula to ensure that all of the ingredients are incorporated. Over low speed, add the shredded coconut (or alternatively, you can process flaked coconut in a food processor until fine). Slowly pour in the warm coconut milk and butter mixture and mix until the batter is smooth.

Scrape down the bowl and pour the batter into the greased pan and bake for 55-65 min, or until cake is golden brown and a knife inserted comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool (in the pan) on a rack for 5-10 min before unmolding. Allow the cake to cool completely before glazing.

In a bowl, whisk together the lime juice, powder and cream. Pour the glaze evenly over the top of the cooled cake. Garnish with coconut flakes.
