IKEA COLLABORATION WITH HAY AND TOM DIXON

9 June 2016

I was just a teeny tiny bit excited when I got wind of the latest IKEA collaborations for next year and lucky to get hold of some brand new images.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the Swedish furniture giant, after all their products have furnished my home as long as I can remember and I’m one of those freaks that actually enjoys putting their flatpacks together. My taste has of course evolved over the years and even though I’ve been drawn to other Scandinavian design brands for a looong time budget constraints due to doubling family size has meant that I always check what’s new in their stores.

Sooooo… I nearly fell off my chair when I found out that I can soon have BOTH, designer furniture at affordable prices. Yes, it’s true! I’m excited to tell you that IKEA is collaborating with HAY and Tom Dixon to explore the future of Scandinavian design through a collection for socialising in the living room. Talking about the reason behind the collaboration IKEA refer to the need to express their historic Scandinavian values and evolving their design identity in our new and changing society.

“The collection will have a classic Scandinavian feel with light colours, high quality and clean design. It will be updated and adapted to the new needs in the living room, with versatile and functional solutions for everyday life, based on smart constructions and using materials in unconventional ways.

The collaboration starts an IKEA exploration in to the future of Scandinavian design which has historically always reflected values in our society such as functionality, humbleness, simplicity and the importance of creating a family friendly home. The world around us is changing, it’s growing and shrinking at the same time. People’s homes are shrinking and their living spaces are being redistributed. It also means that existing values and behaviours are challenged and mixed with new ones.

This creates a need for expressing the Scandinavian values in a new way through an updated Scandinavian design identity. “In a more pluralistic Scandinavia filled with contrasts, there is a need to take the next step and start to define a new Scandinavian design identity. We go about this by opening up and playing with our values combined with materiality, with colours, with production technology, with functions – with our roots,” says Marcus Engman, Design Manager at IKEA of Sweden.

“I’m passionate about the way things are manufactured, I’m very interested in the opportunities in new technologies. People often ask what the world needs. I find it interesting to look at what we can achieve with the possibilities of tomorrow, in modern production, and by using that, making improvements,” says Rolf Hay, co-founder of HAY.

Equally exciting is the news that British designer Tom Dixon will be helping IKEA explore what spacial challenges and increasing interaction with technology mean for the future of living and how to successfully resolve the tensions they create.

“We can see big changes in how the space in our homes is becoming more fluid and we are exploring what this means for both the design and production of furniture. Working with Tom is exciting because he shares our curiosity and drive to find new ways to make things better,” says Marcus Engman, Design Manager at IKEA.

“We are in the midst of a huge revolution in how people create, manufacture and consume – the furniture business has been slow to respond to the opportunities, but now is an amazing time to experiment in new ways of working. In this case in a fresh collaboration directly with the consumer, industry and global experts,” says Tom Dixon.

Oh, it’s going to be a looooong queue when those products launch next year.

BRANDING | UNA RESTAURANT AND MICROBREWERY

30 May 2016

I haven’t shared any graphic design projects for a while simply because I haven’t come across anything particularly exciting. But this branding project for an Bergen restaurant and microbrewery caught my eye with it’s earthy tones, distinct logo type and use of natural materials.

The logo has got a calligraphic feel to it as if it was written with a broad flat nib. There’s an interesting contrast between the broad and thin strokes similar to a serif typeface. The distinct sharp 45 degree angles are a design element in themselves and subtly appear throughout their branding, especially on their website and signage. Una says:

The name Una comes from Latin. It means ‘together’ or ‘in one’. Togetherness is the essence of the concept. Good beer is best enjoyed in good company and at Una you will find craft beer from all over the world under the same roof.

A beer wind is sweeping the world at the moment. The trend started in the USA more than 10 years ago – the idea of brewing craft beer based on small-scale production. This trend has exploded in recent years. A distinction is drawn between full-scale breweries and pub breweries. UNA Brewery & Kitchen is a brewery bar that aims to build on this trend. Locally made beer and food in perfect harmony, with the focus on good local ingredients.

If you like the concept of UNA restaurant and happen to be in Bergen, go and check it out.

FUNCTION AND FORM | OUR SECOND GATHERING PART II

9 May 2016

Happy Monday peeps and hope you all managed to get some sunshine this weekend.

It was the hottest day of the year so far here in London yesterday and we celebrated in style by heading to the outdoor pool… just us and twenty thousand other people with floats, picnics, rugs, umbrellas, hats, cooler bags and everything but the kitchen sink. I’m just glad we came back with the same kids as there was a hell of choice.

Well, back to Monday and I want to show you the second part of our Function And Form gathering from a few weekends ago with our sponsors Houzz who had arranged two very special tours of two of their members homes.

After meeting at Ottolenghi for hot drinks and cakes we took a short walk past Spitalfields market in London’s East End over to architect Chris Dyson’s house in Pricelet Street an area where tens of thousands of French Hugenots (Protestants) settled after Charles II gave them sanctuary from persecution. Their diligence and skills made them thrive as silk weavers and the wealthier families built elegant, distinct three storey town houses in and around Spitalfields with large windows in the attic to let in maximum light for the weavers.

We met with Chris Dyson outside his now family home in Princelet Street. He is passionate about this area and fell in love with the silk weavers houses years ago, restoring and selling a few properties in close proximity before winning a sealed bid for no 11 Princelet Street.

He told us about the history of the area and likened the restoration of the property to mending a ‘broken tooth’ in the streetscape adding a silk weavers loft as well as restoring the 3 distinct large windows on the first floor. The width of the house is a modest 6 meters and to accommodate modern family living – and arguably all the clutter that comes with it – cleverly concealed storage can be found behind most of the elegant wooden wall panelling letting the period features shine.

His first floor drawing room could be straight from a Jane Austen novel but what surprised me most was his eclectic mix and collection of art, sculptures, objects, lights and furniture. He’s somehow managed to gel it all together and has created a stunning home full of little discoveries and vignettes.

Walking further up the stairs we were all drawn to the top floor, the silk weavers loft, and the irresistible views across some of London’s landmarks. My favourite spot had to be the roof terrace, I could happily sit there under that lemon tree and dream myself back into 18th century London, without the smog though.

Find architects, interior designers and contractors on Houzz or simply be inspired by more pictures of Chris Dyson’s work.

GREEN OASIS IN COPENHAGEN

27 January 2016

ggreen oasis, tree, interior, design, interior style, styling, decor, wall art, gallery wall, ornamental plants, statement piece, quirky touch, striking, impact, cophenhagen, period building

This Copenhagen home has got epic proportions and stunning dimensions but the real show stopper is the huge potted tree in the middle of the living room, a statement piece transforming the place into a green oasis.

A great choice for rooms with high ceilings and how wonderful to have that green in your home all year round. I’m toying with the idea of buying some big leafy ornamental plants this Spring for our own home though I can’t quite decide where to put them… or which ones to buy. Help!

The other idea I spotted is the gallery wall – a collection of artworks, both home made and gifts – which has great impact when grouped and framed together.

For me a period home like this has doesn’t need much in terms of styling as its generous proportions are striking enough though it’s little touches like the gallery wall and the 3m high tree that give it that extra quirky touch.

FUNCTION AND FORM | A UNIQUE GATHERING

26 October 2015

Function-And-Form-Gatherings-Introduction-01

You may have noticed that I haven’t been posting as much on the blog lately… all with good reason!

I’ve been quietly working away with my friend Tiff from Curate & Display on a fabulous new venture which we are finally proud to reveal.

Function and Form is a new collaborative gathering combining relaxed, informal dining with handcrafted design. As so much of our lives today are spent online, we seek to bring the enjoyment of interior and lifestyle design into a tangible being whilst enjoying the company of like-minded friends. A chance to make new connections, a chance for real conversation. Each gathering focuses on the work of a designer who we admire for their ethos, their aesthetic, sharing with us their inspiration and inviting us to delve deeper into their process.

Beautiful food in a venue equally so, in great company.

Function-And-Form-Gatherings-Introduction-02

The idea for Function+Form came about when Tiff and I felt there was a lack of well organised, regular socials that were aesthetically pleasing.

We were both feeling the gulf between the online community and the real-life isolation of working alone and decided to bring about a new gathering. F+F focuses broadly on interior design and our intention is to bring like-minded individuals together who share our simple, contemporary aesthetic and desire for slow-living.

Function-And-Form-Gatherings-Introduction-03

We will be running gatherings three to four times a year which are currently free of charge thanks to the support of our sponsors and partners with no more than 20-25 spaces at one time.

You don’t have to be an industry professional to join us, if you have a passion for interiors, design and creative pursuits, you are very welcome, just drop us an email. Our gatherings are also a great platform for showcasing and promoting new and independent designers and craftsmanship.

I can’t tell you how excited we are to host our first gathering sponsored by online community at{mine} in a couple of weeks which is now fully booked. It’s going to be awesome!
