CHINESE NEW YEAR STAMPS | YEAR OF THE HORSE

31 January 2014

chinese new year stamps by paprika via stylejuicer

Happy Chinese New Year to around 1.3 billion -ish people and all of their relations around the world! The world largest population has their own calendar, the Han calendar, which usually begins on the second dark moon after the winter solstice, occasionally the third dark moon. Get it? Me neither. It is also called the Spring festival and the most important social and economic event of the year.

Canadian design studio Paprika designed these beautiful stamps to mark the Year Of The Horse and I love the stylised horses and the rich red and gold colour used. Red in particular is highly symbolic for the Chinese and associated with good fortune and joy as well as fire, warding off evil. During Chinese New Year or special occasions people give out red envelopes with money and I’m sure they appreciate the stamps to tie in with the Year Of The Horse.

The seal in the shape of a horseshoe is a neat little touch and since Paprika is located in Quebec, the French speaking part of Canada, they’ve incorporated both the French and English word for horse on the stamps as well as the Chinese symbol. Ok, my Mandarin is a bit rusty but I’m taking an educated guess here so feel free to correct me in the comments. Let me finish by wishing you:

Happiness, Prosperity, Longevity
福禄寿 fú lù shòu

DESIGN INSPIRATION | ONLINE FOOD JOURNAL FOOD&_

28 January 2014

copyright-foodand_via-stylejuicer-19

Now this is one of those seriously cool successful projects you don’t see very often.

Food&_ was only set up in the summer of 2013 which gives credit to the fact that great design and even greater content are perfect partners. But let me start from the beginning as the story behind this genius concept is encouragement to all perfectionists and procrastinators alike. Ahem… and yes, I do count myself into both those categories.

Founder Ross Featherstone is a keen home cook, an obsessive collector of cookery books and one of those annoying people who take pictures of their meals before picking up a fork – his words not mine. Furthermore he designs and builds websites for a living, so you would think that setting up a blog would be a walk in the park for him. Not so, as I found out when reading up about the concept behind Food&_ on The Culture Vulture.

After years of false starts, getting hung up on design and fussing about detail he finally got the push he needed by signing up to Blog North #4, a food bloggers workshop, where he didn’t want to show up with a handful of undercooked website designs. Getting loads of advice and encouragement during the workshop was the turning point for him and he realised that he wanted his food blog to be a collaborative online food journal.

Bringing together an ever-growing mix of foodies, writers, growers and producers with photographers, illustrators and designers to collectively showcase and promote each individual’s talent. They all share a love food and the stories behind the food, their passions and recipes.

As a graphic designer I’m in love with the fresh approach he and his partners took on the branding and as a fellow blogger I’m insanely jealous of the concept and rocketing success the site has experienced since it’s launch. Let me say at this point that Ross is one of five founding partners, others including Katy Lanceley, Jonathan Finch, Rosalind Stoughton and Christopher Nunn.

The branding is classic and modern at the same time with the use of serif Calendar Plus as a primary headline font and Apercu as a secondary modern sans serif for body copy. The colour palette has been kept neutral and ranges from black and white to beige and grey making the colourful photography appropriately the hero.

All of the collateral has got a lovingly handmade, crafty touch not dissimilar to cooking itself and I like the little details like actual pressed herbs stuck to the covers and the fine, almost botanical black and white illustrations. It’s a utilitarian brand with an earthy character that perfectly compliments food, cooking and dining. A lovingly designed concept that has stand out and longevity. Jamie Oliver eat your heart out.

A DANISH CHRISTMAS HOUSE

10 December 2013

Are you getting into the festive spirit yet? I still haven’t decorated the house but have been finding loads of inspiration online via one of my favourite Scandinavian sites called BO BEDRE. The Danish Christmas House I’d like to share with you today is that of TV personality, crime reporter and author Stine Bolther who is lucky enough to live right next to the forest making it a picture perfect Christmas House including sledging in the fresh snow. How better to while away the time before the arrival of Father Christmas, or Juleman as they call them in Denmark.

I love the way Stine has incorporated different textures with fresh flowers and moss as well as dried pine cones and twigs plus lots of candles giving a crisp and natural feel and just a hint of new beginnings. I can just see Julemanden sitting next to the fire with a mulled wine warming his cold feet and nodding off after delivering all those presents.

It’s a quintessential Christmas House after my own heart, creating interest through texture and materials, keeping it nice, clean and stylish without decoration overload. A great inspiration for my own Julehus – come and visit on Pinterest.

RICE DENMARK – COLOUR POPS FOR THE HOME

2 October 2013

For those of you who know me it might come as a bit of a shock to see me promoting colour in the home. You know that I like my home to be kept in calm, neutral colours until the kids wake up and Lego, Brio and evil plastic battery-operated toys take over and destroy my carefully arranged minimalist space.

‘Get a playroom’ I hear you say but until next week when I win the lottery (notice, ‘when’ not ‘if’) I bravely put up with the eyesore and take pride in the fact that my kids are having a whale of a time.

Now, colourful and beautifully designed objects are of course a totally different kettle of fish and I love how they give me a bit of a boost during the long dark months. Like most people colour equals energy and happiness for me. Which leads me nicely to RICE Denmark, a home wares and accessories company who are known for their colourful melamine, handmade baskets/storage and hand glazed Italian tableware. RICE are eager to point out that Danish design is not all about cool and calm interiors. RICE style is about fun, colour, pattern and the enjoyment of informal living.

Their designs have a vintage feel to them and are inspired by ‘the good old days’. A zingier palette than our own British Cath Kidstone and certainly quirkier considering eg. the tassel detailing on the tea towels and plates featuring Victorian bird prints. I can’t help but being drawn to their designs and can see them working across a variety of homes, be it a contemporary apartment, a country retreat or a family home.

RICE Founder & Creative director, Charlotte, has made it her mission to bring humor, more colours and happiness to everyday life.

Colours are essential to me – I truly believe in the power of colours and my hope with Happy Home is to motivate you into making bold color choices… Just paint a wall – play with colors and live colorful lives.

It’s going to be a colourful week!

/// Don’t miss my travel report on PALMA DE MALLORCA tomorrow – it’s got ‘cojones’.

HIP DESIGN FOR ARGENTINIAN BRAND VON BERRY

13 August 2013

It took me a while to figure out what Von Berry actually do. Do they make or sell road bikes? Motor bikes? Surfboards? Food? All I know is I LOVE their branding and whatever it is they do or sell I want some – and buckets of it please! They have the cool factor for the sophisticated 25+ market without the extra ‘cheese’ and their sparse info including a very stylish minimal website adds to the mystery thus reinforcing their übercool concept.

So, here’s what I’ve managed to gather from their social network. Established in 2010 they are an Argentinian brand and describe themselves on Facebook as:

Women, Men Clothing, Custom Cycles, Surf & Coffee.

Their mission statement simply reads: Feel at home! Hmmm… I’ve got the feeling that something might have got lost in translation.

But all this is just a preamble to my serious gushing about their awesome branding which was illustrated, designed and art directed by Benjamín Sepúlveda. What is it with South American graphic design? Maybe the salsa just makes them chill out and therefore produce hip and loose design that you just don’t find anywhere else. Admittedly a theory that needs more research but the only explanation that my logical German mind can come up with right now.

I’ve also got a sneaky suspicion that Benjamín is somehow related to the owners and creators of Von Berry as he looks like he could be one of their models and seems to have ingested an overdose of dudeness. What a talent! I’m following him on Pinterest and Facebook in the hope that one day he’ll take notice of Stylejuicer.

*Sighs* Alas, so far no pixie dust or Facebook love from Argentina.
