heart, love, sun, light, bed, relax, enjoy, chill, weekend, calm, walk, beach, bake, bread, read, wood, feet up, style, feeling, sensual, mood board, create, design

I hope you can take it easy this weekend and enjoy this last stretch of summer.

It’s still another 3 long weeks before school starts here in the UK and we’re looking forward to grandma and grandpa visiting from the US. So much to explore in and around London and with babysitters on hand hopefully some date nights for me and the cowboy.

If you’re still wondering what to do this weekend take some inspiration from the mood board. Wishing you happy weekend vibes.

A SUMMER STORY BY RAFA KIDS

13 August 2014

dutch, rafa kids, simple, modern, functional, architects, rafa, furniture, sustainable, european birch, plywood, engineered, zero waste, F&R bed, teen bed, K desk, material efficiency, design, function, bedding, femke veltkamp, windstilte

I’ve been a fan of Dutch furniture RaFa Kids for a while and love reading what they get up to on their blog.

Agata and Arek are both architects who started designing high quality functional children’s furniture when their two sons Frank and Robert arrived. They received so many compliments and requests for their son’s first bed that they decided to start a small company combining the letters of their family members – RaFa.

Today’s shots are form a recent little summer story Agata created in her studio with fish pillows by Dutch illustrator and textile designer Femke Veltkamp from Windstilte and the RaFa teen bed and stripy bedlinen. The shots are such fun and I love the colour palette and styling.

Reading Agata’s blog their business seems to have really taken off and their beds sell out like hot cakes. I’d love to put an order in for the highly adaptable F&R bed and the gorgeous K desk but will need to wait till our boys are older and we move to a bigger place.

As parents of small boys their design is highly engineered with much thought gone into production, packaging and assembly. Their furniture is made of quality European Birch plywood a flexible material with high strength and is sustainably sourced. It is produced by an established Polish company and using the latest computer numerically controlled technology they produce with great material efficiency trying to reduce waste to virtual zero.

Impressive values for a small company and I just hope they’ll still have some beds left when I get to put my order in.

PLACES TO GO | VILLA KALOS, ITHACA

8 August 2014

villa kalos, greece, travel, island, ithaca, photographer, gerda genis, robbert koene, ruin, restoration, villa, agean sea, luxury, boutique, interior design, understated, pool, polished concrete, design, style, trend, guest house

From Mykonos to Villa Kalos, Ithaca – it’s Greek island hopping with Stylejuicer this week. 😉

This stunning villa was an abandoned ruin just over four years ago when South African photographers Gerda Genis and Robbert Koene fell in love with it. The breathtaking views of the Aegan Sea and the peaceful surrounding countryside with almond trees and olive groves make this a prime spot to relax and recharge with a deliberate choice of no technology (scary, but necessary every once in a while).

The couple restored the property with much love and care and lots of help from the locals converting it into an understated boutique villa with 4 bedrooms and 4 en-suite bathrooms, a salt-water pool, terraced gardens and 6,000 sqm of land to get lost in.

I have to say that I’ve fallen in love with the interior which is a competent mix of old and new and I like that they kept some of the old stone walls and juxtaposed them with polished concrete floors and exquisite furnishings and fabrics. Everything is kept in a luxurious neutral colour palette of whites, greys and browns which puts even more emphasis on the external beauty of the turquoise sea, bright blue sky and green rolling countryside.

What a perfect place to spend some quality time with friends and family and simply: just be.

Wishing you all a happy weekend!

DESIGN INSPIRATION | BRANDING BY SAVVY STUDIO

15 July 2014

Håndværk, handvaerk, branding, design, graphic design, savvy studio, mexico, monterray, quality, luxury, craftsmanship, hand-make, hand-finish, finest raw materials, family owned workshops, clean aesthetics, understated, NYC, esteban saba, petra brichnacova

Today’s branding project was a complete surprise to me on two levels. Firstly it’s not – as first thought – a Scandinavian brand but was actually established in New York only last year by husband and wife team Esteban Saba and Petra Brichnacova. They say:

Håndværk is a small, artisan label specialising in supremely luxurious pieces with a thoughtfully curated collection of high quality everyday essentials made from the finest natural raw materials and innovative fabrics.

Our heritage is grounded in three generations of small-scale family production; a storied legacy of manufacturing textiles, garments, and luxury products. We hand-make or hand-finish each individual piece in collaboration with other family owned workshops specialized in their craft, who share our unwavering commitment for exceptional quality.

Wow, they had me at artisan but that’s not all. I was probably even more surprised to find out that the branding was done by Savvy, a design studio in Monterray Mexico, of all places. Wow, again as I think their translation of the brand values is perfectly reflected in the logo and understated packaging. The predominantly white aesthetics, clean lines and minimalist typography oozes luxury and quality. I should also mention that the word håndværk means craft in Danish and the special lower case a and ae characters add interest and subtle recognition to the logo type.

A beautiful branding job that got me thinking about the Mexican design studio that managed to create such a cool luxury brand. On further snooping around Savvy’s instagram account it seems that they’re a fan of Scandinavian aesthetics as shots of their office could easily be in Copenhagen, Stockholm or Berlin. I guess the beauty of the world wide web brings us ever closer together and how wonderful to think that a NYC luxury brand with Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics was conjured up by a Mexican design studio. Truly inspirational!

NOTE: Check out the branding for Nordic House by another superb Mexcian studio.

PLACES TO GO | CLARRODS COPENHAGEN

2 July 2014

places to go, clarrods, copenhagen, furniture, design, store, shop, bar, cafe, claus larsen, paulina arcklin, photography, vintage, industrial, creative fulfilment, trend, travel

Ok, if I could move into this shop I totally would. Not only is it in beautiful design heaven Copenhagen but it also comes with a bar/cafe and will soon be serving food I’m being told by the owner Claus Larsen.

Claus used to have a career in ‘money’ (erm… something lost in translation here but I get the drift) before he opened Clarrods – a fabulous furniture shop selling mostly Claus’ own designs and some hand-picked decorative vintage pieces. He’s also trained as a welder and has two other guys helping him produce a variety of tables and benches with mostly wooden tops on steel frames.

I saw the shots of his store on Paulina Arcklin’s site, a Finnish photographer who now lives in Amsterdam. She was scouting for material for one of her books when she passed Clarrods and took this beautiful series. When I got in touch with her to ask permission she emphasised that nothing is styled in these shots which makes them even more special.

This shop is pretty much bang on my current taste for industrial vintage and I love the fact that Claus included a bar/cafe because ‘it would be cool to try that out and why not’.

I’ve got enormous respect for people who decide to switch careers and – once again – it shows that there’s nothing better than creative fulfilment. As they say if you do what you love you won’t have to do a day’s work in your life.

I hope you’ll pop by Clarrods if you’re in the area and make sure to soak up the atmosphere with a little drink or two. A definite must-see on my own CPH list.
