MOOD BOARD | HAPPY EASTER

20 April 2014

Happy Easter, Bunny, Rabbit, Easter Eggs, Decorations, Decor, Flowers, Carrot Balloons, Chocolate, Hot Cross Buns, Baking, Recipe

Happy Easter everyone! Have you OD’d on chocolate yet? Are you peeling your children off the wall and scrubbing the sofa like mad to get those lovely brown finger prints off? And not for the first time telling yourself ‘shouldn’t have gone for the cream covers’ whilst your other half is peacefully nodding off after a bottle of crisp dry white. Aw… isn’t Easter bliss!?

Ok, intense family time is always tricky but seriously Easter is one of my favourite holidays. Not just because I’m a chocoholic and I can openly indulge in my favourite food group (yes, it’s a food group for me!) but mainly because unlike Christmas, Easter is still – thankfully – so much less commercial and people actually seem to get that it’s more about getting together with family and friends than spending money on presents.

So, enjoy the Easter spirit and this little inspirational mood board and I do sincerely hope you’re having a nice time with your loved ones. See you back here next week.

SORRENTO BEACH HOUSE BY SHAREEN JOEL DESIGN

17 April 2014

Sorrento-Beach-House-Shareen-Joel-Design-via-Stylejuicer-07

This beautiful weekend getaway on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria belongs to interior designer and founder of inspiration blog Share Design Shareen Joel and her family of four. I’m rather envious of her little gem as in my opinion it has all the components that a home-from-home should have: set in a great (coastal) location with a sociable layout and a simple, casual and relaxed interior.

Cleverly integrated into the coastal landscape the house with it’s L-shaped floor plan is easy to live in centering around a sheltered decked terrace and an old Moonah tree. The natural light flooding in from those gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows helps with the flow of the semi open-plan space where the living and kitchen/dining areas are partitioned off with a (kitchen) storage unit and integrated wood burner. A sign that even in Victoria it does get chilly which for some reason I find hard to fathom.

What I love most about the house is the black timber cladding and contrasting natural timber window frames and doors. On entering the space is almost completely white with Larch floorboards and a mix of vintage and design pieces. Accent colours are kept to a minimum and only provided through crockery and soft furnishings. The overall feel is very clean and minimalist with natural textures like wood and worn leather chairs taking the lead.

I wish there were more shots of the outside of the house and the surrounding landscape as I’m sure the coastline must be beautiful and I read that Shareen’s husband and son are sailing nuts. Maybe the outside shower with the old fashioned zinc tub is for them to rinse off after a tough ride on the ocean waves!?

COOL STUFF | EASTER BY FERM LIVING

15 April 2014

ferm-LIVING-Easter-2014-via-Stylejuicer-03

I’ve long been a fan of Danish home decor & accessories company ferm Living and have an unexplained affinity with founder and owner Trine Andersen. Read my previous post here.

Maybe because she’s a graphic designer like me or maybe because she takes everyday life as inspiration for her products or maybe it’s just all clever marketing and I shouldn’t be so bloomin’ naive as the cowboy would tell me. But still… I can’t help but being drawn to ferm’s Scandinavian design traditions and retro charm and their distinctive graphic edge.

Now, since we’re about to embark on copious amounts of chocolate bunnies and eggs I’d like to share ferm Living’s playful take on Easter with you today. I love the way they’ve styled the photos and incorporated some old school egg painting. I bet that was a fun shoot taking the models back to their childhoods.

You can see more in their online magazine and shop the collection on their website.

DESIGN INSPIRATION | BRANDING BOLIVAR RESTAURANT OSLO

14 April 2014

Bolivar-Restaurant-via-Stylejuicer-10

Hola, que tal?! I’ve decided that Mondays are for inspiration and today I’d like to share Norwegian design studio Heydays’ branding for restaurant Bolivar with you.

Bolivar is a small piece of South America served in Oslo through authentic food, wine and cigars. Inspired by personal travels and experiences, the identity reflects the owners own impressions of the continent. Joyful, vocal and varied.

Sounds good, doesn’t it!? The branding really caught my eye as it’s a modern take on the tried and tested good ol’ steak house. But unlike most traditional steak houses – thankfully – Bolivar’s menu doesn’t come in a heavy faux leather bound folder with plastic sleeves that stick together with cheap multipurpose cleaner.

Heydays have come up with a creative binding technique for the menu whereby a branded board with a red elastic band holds drinks and main menu together, almost like a clip board. Oh, how I love a clip board… it gives you so much power, doesn’t it!? I should walk around with one more often… but I digress.

It’s a genius idea as unappetizing grubby menus can quickly and easily be replaced as well as updated reacting to customer preferences and including seasonal dishes. Everyone’s a winner!

My favourite bit has to be the deliberately uneven typography that links back to one of their original inspiration shots showing a street vendors cart and it’s hand painted sign. The pastel stock for stationery and marketing materials is another nod to that photograph and works well with the intense red typography and tactile dark wood and leather for the rest of the signage.

An great example of a funky, modern South American eatery and bodega with a fun, earthy and totally authentic feel. Hasta mañana.

PLACES TO GO | ORCHARD KEEPERS AUSTRALIA

11 April 2014

Orchard-Keepers-Australia-via-Stylejuicer-03

Happy Friday peeps! It’s going to be a bit of a hectic day for me as I’m packing our suitcase. Yes, we’re off to see Oma in Germany and I am soooo looking forward to the break.

Lucky for us Oma (grandmother) lives in the most idyllic spot on the Baltic Sea coast in northern Germany and weather permitting we’ll have the grey city dust blown away in no time whilst playing on the beach and running around her vast garden looking for snails and other creepy crawlies.

So to get me in the holiday mood and to give you some eye-candy for the weekend I’m going to share another idyllic spot with you. Though this one is right on the other side of the planet with, ahem… slightly warmer weather, in southern Australia. Orchard Keepers is a home-from-home holiday rental and consists of a four bedroom house with a separate workers cottage providing accommodation for 10 people.

What struck me most about this place was the tasteful relaxed yet stylish and elegant interior which sits so well amongst the gentle rolling vineyards and orchards.

Inside chalk white walls and a calm colour palette of greys and browns dominate whilst personally sourced vintage furniture, lighting and artworks from across the globe add an eclectic feel. It’s a perfect backdrop to discover the unusual objects and details throughout the house. I’m a big fan of animal skulls and love the one above the vintage French armchair, a great spot for reading and watching the wildlife through the large patio doors. I know where I’d spend most of my time.

Orchard Keepers has a real personal feel to it as the owners also encourage guests to make full use of the kitchen gardens, even providing lists on what’s in season. And if you have a few kids in tow you’ll be pleased to hear that they’ve even got a playground. Heaven! Shame it’s on the other side of the planet – alas it’s off to the Baltic Sea we go and that too should be quite heavenly.

NOTE: I’ve scheduled a few posts for next week as I’m not sure how reliable Wifi is at Oma’s place but don’t fret you can follow our antics on Instagram and read about it here on the blog on my return. Tschuess… as they say in northern Germany.
