Hello and a warm welcome to another guest contributor on Stylejuicer. Southern California based Michelle Sterling is the lovely mummy of Avery and Nate and a photographer with a blog called Avery and Augustine where she records her children’s first forays in cooking, art and everything in between.

Today she features some fabulous building blocks that are a real treat for creative parents who are into their typefaces – oh, and of course they are great for children too but Michelle will tell you more about that. Take it away Michelle!

Thanks Annie, I’m excited to be here and glad you’re so enthusiastic about the building blocks… not to call you a font nerd!

You can introduce children to thoughtful design early on with their playthings. This set of Neutraface Slab Blocks by type foundry House Industries is made of replenishable Michigan-grown, kiln-dried basswood and is a great introduction to different typefaces and hopefully a subsequent appreciation for them! Other amazing block sets by House Industries can be found here. And don’t worry, you don’t have to be a typography nerd… but it helps.

Love it Michelle and thanks for the in-joke. For everything cute and kiddie related head over to Michelle’s blog and for more adorable photos check out her portfolio and follow her on Instagram.

FOOD HEAVEN | ASPARAGUS TORTILLA RECIPE

11 June 2014

Asparagus-Tortilla-Recipe-via-acupofjo-01

I was looking around for a different use of asparagus before the season is over here in the UK and came across this gorgeous asparagus tortilla recipe via Joanna Goddard’s blog A Cup Of Jo.

The recipe and food styling is actually by Liza Jernow and the photography by Tara Donne who are currently collaborating to bring you/me/us Wild Apple Magazine this autumn, a gluten-free food and travel magazine filled with killer recipes, inspiring ideas and beautiful photos.

I’m not sure how they managed to get most of my favourite words into one sentence but they just have! I’m salivating already at the sheer thought of this print magazine.

But I digress, back to one of their killer recipes for Jo’s picnic series. A quick and easy asparagus tortilla that tastes delicious warm or cold and is particularly easy to serve if you remember to slice it before wrapping it up.

Isn’t the food styling fabulous!? I’m soooo going to make this and might even give you a glimpse on Instagram.

TORTILLA ESPANOLA
INGREDIENTS:

2 large gold fleshed potatoes, peeled and cut to 1/8th-inch thick half moons
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
8 large eggs
1 clove garlic
1/4 lb. thin asparagus, cut in 1/2-inch pieces
1/2 cup flat leaf parsley, finely chopped
1 tsp. finely chopped fresh tarragon
1 tsp. fine sea salt

DIRECTIONS:

Heat the oven to 450F. Heat the oil in a 10-inch heavy skillet over medium low. Add the potatoes and onion, cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and cook five minutes more, until potatoes are cooked through but not browned. Strain the mixture in a colander, reserving the oil.

Return the pan to the stove. Add 3 tbsp. of the reserved oil and the potato mixture. Beat the eggs in a large bowl, add the asparagus, herbs and salt, then pour into the pan. Let the mixture settle a bit on the bottom, then gently shake the pan to release the eggs from the bottom. Run a heatproof spatula around the edge of the pan to release the tortilla from the sides.

Once the bottom is set and the sides begin to set but the center is still wet (about eight minutes) place the pan in the oven. Watch it closely. You want it just cooked, the surface dry but not browned. Remove from oven and invert onto a serving dish or cutting board. If you are bring this dish to a picnic, let it cool completely before wrapping it up.

INTERIORS CRUSH | SOFIA JANSSON’S SWEDISH HOME

9 June 2014

Sofia, mokkasin, blog, photographer, scandinavian, interior design, white, bright, light, colourful, quirky, pieces, flowers, niki, my scandinavian home, instagram, william morris wallpaper

Ever since I came across Sofia Jansson from Mokkasin blog via the Zara brothers and sisters campaign I’ve kinda Instagram stalked her… in a nice way I hasten to add.

She’s not just the most wonderful photographer that sets up inspirational shoots with her 4 kids but her home is equally special, very light and Scandinavian with lots of interesting bits and pieces strewn around. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I found a tour of her home on the Swedish online edition of Elle Decor and via Niki from My Scandinavian Home.

I’m head over Birkenstocks in love with Sofia’s clean white home which she uses a lot for photoshoots and thrilled to see it in a spring/summer setting with lots of flowers everywhere and flooded with light. The white lilac on the kitchen table is my fav and I love the large period double doors in the living room opening out into the garden. Did you notice the matching windows in the conservatory!? Most of her furniture is made from a light coloured wood – I’m guessing birch – which gives it a classic Scandinavian feel, keeping the interior light and bright.

What really makes the place stand out to me are all the little colourful quirky details, like the rainbow cushions, the pink radio in the kitchen and a matching teal guitar and armchair in the background. Let me just add how fabulous to break up all this white space with a wall covered in William Morris wallpaper!? That work space is just so inspirational and a complete pattern overload – I love it!

I can’t see enough of her home… Guess I’ll need to stalk her some more on Instagram, wanna join the lovefest!? Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

PLACES TO GO | HARTLEY FARM SHOP AND CAFE

6 June 2014

hartley farm shop and cafe, farmer tom bowles, wiltshire, bath, england, local produce, quality, award winning, seasonal menu, environmentally responsible, bath life awards, best cafe,

Hello Friday people! Today’s Place To Go is the fabulous Hartley Farm Shop and Cafe in Wiltshire near Bath. You might remember that I’ve just had a girlie weekend and this was one of the places we visited and couldn’t get enough of. Delicious food, great service, family friendly and top notch local produce. It was a winner on all fronts.

But let me give you a bit of background. The fifth generation family farm is tucked away in the most picturesque countryside in the west of England and is a great day out, especially if you have small children and like your food. Although I wasn’t with my kids I loved the recent addition of ‘Little Hartley’ – a small play area with bouncy toy cows, ride-on tractors as well as rabbits, chickens and ducks to admire close up. All nicely shaded and safely fenced in, it’s a beautifully designed space as is the farm shop and cafe with a light and airy barn extension overlooking the farm, vegetable gardens and fields.

The cafe deserves a special mention as not only did they recently win the local Bath Life Award for best cafe but the standard is truly exceptional. My eggs florentine (pictured above) was cooked to perfection, laid by free roaming happy hens who gave me a high five when I walked past.

There is an ever changing blackboard of daily specials on offer with seasonal ingredients, vegetables and meat sourced directly from the farm or as local as possible. No surprise that they’ve also been shortlisted for the ‘Best Environmentally Responsible Venue’ category in the Bath Chronicle Love to Shop awards.

The farm has got a lovely warm atmosphere and also houses a micro brewery, a florist and a resident bee keeper whose honey sells out in the blink of an eye, in addition to rearing cattle, pigs, chickens and sheep. It feels very homely and seems a well-run family business that supports the local community and sets an example of how farmers can diversify if they have the vision and drive to embrace new markets.

If you ever find yourself down that beautiful neck of the woods make sure to pop in for some locally produced groceries, a great meal or even just a descent cup of coffee with a slice of mouth-watering home made brownie – another award winner. I’m definitely coming back for brunch with family in tow and just hope I can persuade the kids to leave the ride on tractors behind when it’s time to leave.

IN THE MIX | GREENS

5 June 2014

in the mix, greens, style, fashion, japanese, copper, scissors, mayflower supply company, smitten studio, zucchini pasta, mint pea pesto, recipe, healthy, easy, quick

I’m noticing greens everywhere at the moment.

Nature has just exploded around here – mainly due to the amount of rain we had – and everything is looking lush. It’s giving me energy and I want to transform our terrace into something like this deck above, cut fresh herbs with these Japanese copper scissors for the delicious looking zucchini pasta recipe via smitten studio and strut around one of the green houses from the Mayflower Supply Company’s Spring look book.

June is going to be juicy!

FASHION // Great backdrop for the Mayflower Supply Company Spring 2014 Look Book.
SCISSORS // These Japanese copper scissors would look great in my (imaginary) collection.
PASTA // Gorgeous recipe of Zucchini Pasta with Mint-Pea Pesto via smitten studio.
PLANTER // Love the design of this outside space.
