As promised I’m going to bring you some fabulous interiors that incorporate lots of texture over the next couple of months. So let’s kick off with this new built warehouse in Friesland that softens it’s industrial edges with beautiful rugs, throws and cushions in boiled wool and felt.

The monochrome palette of greys, browns and soft whites feels very calming and draws your attention to the different materials used. I adore the contrast of the sleek iMac on top of a rough wooden work desk that’s reminiscent of old warehouse palettes.

It’s a modern rustic look that pitches polished concrete floor, A-frame steels and roughly painted brick work against vintage finds and heirlooms and I like how the uneven edges of the boiled wool rugs and throws add an immediate cozy feel.

My favourite shot has to be the bedroom with dark indigo/grey vintage linen next to an untreated block of wood as a bedside table. It’s simple and rustic yet wonderfully contemporary and I can just imagine how cozy this space must feel in the winter with lots of candle light.

More modern rustic looks on my Pinterest board.

MOOD BOARD | AUTUMN VIBES #01

8 November 2014

fall, vibes, toast, aw14, textures, cozy, warmth, pinterest, trends, styling, autumn, mood board, cold, look book, materials, photography, comfort, modern rustic, muted colours, style,

There’s no denying it, it’s definitely Autumn. I briefly got fooled into thinking the warm weather would continue into November when we experienced the warmest Halloween on record last week. Since then warm jackets, hats and even gloves have come out and I’m preparing myself for the darker months.

I was really inspired by the moody picture above from the Toast AW14 look book (isn’t her outfit gorgeous!?) and have created a little mood board around it. Hope you like it and stay tuned for more autumnal interior trends next week. I’m thinking layers of different textures and materials oozing warmth and comfort, perfect styling for the coming months. A mood you’ll see lots of on my MODERN RUSTIC Pinterest board. Check it out.

Happy Weekend y’all!

COOL STUFF | THE NEW CRAFTSMEN

6 November 2014

I’ve got a new shop crush: The New Craftsmen in Mayfair, London. It’s located in a striking arts and crafts building, originally designed and built as a workshop for a firm of leather breech makers. A very appropriate location since TNC represent a selection of Britain’s finest craft makers showcasing the materials, skills and craft products of the British Isles.

They currently represent a network of over 75 makers working in textiles, silverware, furniture, ceramics, jewellery, glassware and beyond selling a carefully selected range of products, limited editions and exclusive collaborations via their Mayfair shop and online.

I love their ethos which resides in artisanship, traditional skills and craft being used in contemporary ways – very on trend at the moment as we see a backlash against mass production and a return to individuality and tradition all with a modern twist.

The products are made with dedication and a real passion for materials and design. Admittedly this exceptional quality doesn’t come cheap but the attention to detail is next to none as you can see in some of the shots I’ve included below. The beauty is that these are potential design classics of the future and will last you a lifetime.

A gem of a shop, especially if you’re looking for something unique and at the same time supporting the heritage of British craftsmanship and emerging talents.

HOTEL WIESERGUT | CONTEMPORARY AUSTRIAN

4 November 2014

I haven’t been in the mountains, let alone the Alps, for like… ever so today I’m indulging myself and you with the beautiful photography by Mario Webhofer of Hotel Wiesergut in the wonderful ski resort of Saalbach Hinterglem, Austria.

Situated right on the slopes this is my idea of alpine luxury accommodation exuding warmth and comfort, style and elegance. I adore their muted colour palette and natural textures with floor-to-ceiling windows giving you an uninterrupted view of the mountains and immersing you in the landscape.

The interior design is contemporary Austrian with a strong Scandi flavour of simple and clean lines letting the textures, materials and bespoke furnishing do the talking. Rustic elements like the contemporary fire places, stone brick walls and tree trunk slices serving as side tables bring a relaxed atmosphere appropriate for guest returning from outdoor adventures.

Designed by Gogl Architekten the goal was to upgrade the existing traditional structure with puristic architecture. Monika Gogl therefore worked very consciously with contrasting materials such as local wood, natural stone, granite, glass and exposed concrete putting nature at its centre.

The Wiesergut is also very proud of their local produce and vegetable garden which their chefs use in new and innovative ways. A spa and indoor pool round off the luxury experience and you’d seriously have to drag me out of there kicking and screaming… *heaven*

TUCHINDA AW14 | INSPIRED CHILDREN’S CLOTHES

30 October 2014

tuchinda, tina tuchinda, parsons, nyc, fashion design, european, japanese, sophisticated, fabrics, cuts, collection, AW, 2014, luxury, passion, elegant, inspirational, good taste, trend, style, egon schiele, expressionism

‘Do what you love and love what you do’. It’s a cliché and we’ve all read it a gazillion times but it is so true that all exceptional products and services are born out of a deeply rooted passion.

The same goes for NYC children’s wear brand Tuchinda. What started out as a way of staying creative for Tina Tuchinda whilst looking after her son soon became a passion and obsession that led to launch her own label. With a fashion degree from Parsons Tina found the childrenswear market somewhat limiting and she started to sew clothes for her baby boy Hunter at night when he was six months old. Soon she had requests from other mums and Tina found herself designing and sewing day and night. Starting up her own label was the natural next step and she describes her point of difference:

Tuchinda expresses a high level of artistry normally reserved for luxury womenswear and menswear. I predominantly use European and Japanese fabrics, including organic fabrics whenever possible. There are a lot of pattern manipulation, sewing technique, details, prints and colours that are highly sophisticated and not easily found in childrenswear. I believe children’s clothes should be multicultural wearable art.

Oh, how I’d love to dress my kids in the latest AW collection, inspired by the Austrian artist Egon Schiele with designs reminiscent of early 20th century peasant clothing like waistcoats, tunic shirts and even a ‘Hansel’ coat. I’m totally mad about the grown-up muted colour palette of grey, ochre, faded brown, olive, burgundy, hunter green and plum with a few innovative prints evoking Schiele’s Expressionism.

This is a label with a real point of difference and Tina has fulfilled her ambitious mission to give children clothes that are passionate, elegant, inspirational, worldly and inspire good taste. I can’t wait for the next collection!
